No need to panic. This is not nearly the doomsday scenario that people are making it out to be. The front seven will have to step up but the talent is there for that to happen. How many of you can even name more than one player in Carolina's or San Francisco's secondary. After what the Seahawks did in the SB people think that you NEED an elite secondary to win (nevermind the fact that they were in Manning's face all game) but that's just a knee-jerk reaction. There's no formula for winning despite teams desperation to find one. That showed in this past offseason when the likes of Vontae Davis was getting 10M+ a year.
A few things wrong with this logic. You are rationalizing this now because we lost 2 CBs. Had we lost a safety or a top WR then, the story would change, and Idzik would have been crucified for something else. If Decker God forbid would have sustained that injury we would be clamoring as to why we did not pick up another WR In free agency, or a top WR instead of the safety in the draft, likewise had we lost Pryor they would be all over Idzik for not picking up a veteran safety, on and on. The point made was that the likelihood of loosing a rookie to ACL is no different than the likelihood of loosing a vet. In either case many in this forum would blame the GM which is insane. Idzik, and rightfully so, was not going to overload one position at the detriment of another. Unfortunately the bad injuries happen to all teams, but that is not an excuse to go overboard in any one position.
I don't think it's a crisis because of McDougald but if Milliner is injured it's significant. We do have a few guys like Walls on the roster who aren't bad. And Patterson if healthy should be better than he looked on Thursday night. But we do have depth at the DL position and if Idzik gets a good offer he'll probably make a trade. If not they have cap space so they can wait and see. And pounce on another team's salary dump.
I'm waiting till Saturday to throw a hissy fit. They face the Bengals...who, as we know from last year, will be a very good test for the secondary. Probably the last good one (since the last starters game is against Eli Manning). Patterson's and whoever is starting opposite's (Assuming it will be Walls) performance will be VERY important. Jets will probably use practices & Bengals game to determine if they should sign a FA or attempt a trade. I personally think they won't. (As Rex said today, he believes in his corners and that the defense will be just fine).
This really is an issue and whether or not Idzik dropped the ball remains to be seen, but I honestly have to scratch my head at the CB situation. We desperately needed help at this position before losing Cro yet when FA started we thumbed our nose at some pretty good talent at that position. Injuries are part of the game and Rex Talks about depth at the position, I'm not sure he means talented depth, or just a bunch of other ?????
Double edged sword for this Saturday. You wanna leave the CBs out there as long as possible to see who steps up as a potential starter. Yet if you leave them out too long you're risking another injury, which we can't even remotely afford.
What really hurts is that McDougle was a reach in the 3rd round. We really needed to go WR after we failed to address that in the first 2 rounds. This is on Idzik.
Every team has an 'Idzik.' Ours has to bark around the league and trade a bone. That or wait near the trash and wait till one gets tossed out.
I finally got to watch the preseason game @ 3:00am in the morning today on NFL network. Patterson was utterly lost. I believe he is Steve Harvey's illegitimate love child with a comedy groupie. What a resemblance.
I disagree. He addressed positions of need like WR and picked a first round safety which are all huge attempts to fix problems areas. CB was identified by EVERYONE as a major area of need and his way of addressing it was letting Cro walk, signing an old beat up retread with injury issues and drafting a 3rd round CB who was by no means guaranteed to make the team who was coming off of missing an entire year due to injury. If a WR or safety went down at least Idzik attempted to fix those problems. The CB position, on the other hand, was overlooked entirely and we had little to no depth at the position. He dropped the ball, that's pretty obvious.
Hey the way refs are calling illegal contact & defensive holding thus far this preseason, It may not MATTER who you have at corner beyond being good tacklers.Any chance Idzik had really good insight?
Quiet down. Logic isn't allowed on this board. Now if you would like to emotionally overreact, then go ahead and post like everyone else.
The only upside to this is if Idzik decides that someone needs to be brought in - it's at a position that is pretty much plug and play as far as scheme and playbook goes.
I think the jets can't be scared of injuries. Rex needs to see what we have in our remaining corners. Time to do that is now when the wins and losses don't count.
We'll be fine as long as Milliner's injury is not serious enough to make him effectively miss half the season or more. Rex isn't going to ask guys to do things they're not capable of doing. If we're really lacking starting caliber CB's going into the season expect to see lots of Cover-2. Last year Rex used much more Cover-2 in the latter part of the season when he realized his personnel was not prospering in other schemes.
