Honestly at this point, what AFC team besides the Patriots and Colts can say they have a legit chance at winning a championship right now? You don't throw in the towel in week 2 because it doesn't look like you'll win the championship.
Pennington is better than Clemens because he won a division title in 2002 and won playoff games in January 2003 and January 2005? By that rationale, Hank Poteat is clearly better than Darrelle Revis.
There is no "towel" to throw in. This is a classic Jet senario - instead of building the team in totality, they do it in bits and pieces and it never jells. Lets say Pennington plays this season, wins a few games, maybe even gets us in the playoffs. Then physically he can't play next year. Now Clemens has to start, and he is another Browning Nagle. So we will have to get a new QB for the 09 season. Meanwhile everyone is a year older, players leave, etc. Lets see if this guy is the deal or not THIS year, so the plans can be made in the off season, and a team can be built to win, instead of trying to be a two headed beast - rebuilding and trying to win at the same time. Hey, maybe with Chad we win 9 and Clemens we win 6. I will gladly give those 3 games to see if Clemens is for real and get a year under his belt.
I'm not quite sure about them, but the Steelers are one year removed from the Super Bowl and their new head coach is good. They beat on two pansies to open the season, but I betcha they think they have a legit chance. I suspected the Chargers would be 10-6 due entirely to the poor head coach they have in place there right now. The sad thing is that team has 14-2 personnel.
I just posted about that in another thread.... not only did they fire the best HC they've had in about 15 years but they also lost their DC and OC who were considered among the best at their positions in the league. LT has 68 rushing yards and if these numbers don't drastically improve Hives will be one and done. SD has got to be one of the stupidest organizations on the planet. They took themselves out of any shot of winning the SB a week after last season ended. It shouldn't be a surprise that the Chicken and Bastard Father took apart that team last night. The Chargers are a shell of what they were last year.
I think Dan Reeves would have been perfect for that job. He took four teams to Super Bowls. The 2007 Chargers have better personnel than did those four teams. Reeves would like to coach again, but he'll probably never get a chance unless it was a ready-to-win-big team where he'd be out of there after 1 or 2 years regardless. Some people may not like Reeves. Well, he can coach and the Chargers would have had a clue last night if he was their head coach.
Not only that but aside from Frank Beamer he's the only guy that was able to get anything other than trouble out of Mike Vick. He had real shitty teams with the Giants and they were still competative. That's an interesting choice but definately an upgrade over Hives.
