I feel like I made my stance very clear, and why I feel the way I do. You disagree, and that's fine, but there's no need to get confrontational by saying I don't have a point.
I didn't watch last night's game but I have watched quite a few Giants games and what's due is due, Damon Harrison has been a great signing for them. Last year's Giants were 24th defense in yards per rush, this year, 3rd. That's no coincidence. Especially since Harrison is 3rd on the team in tackles.. from the DT position. say what you want about your feelings at the time but Harrison for 5 years at 46 million looks like a great deal when it sits next to Wilkerson's 5 years/$86 million. Maccagnan had that very call and its looks, in 2016 at least, like he botched it
It isn't personal, and I'm not trying to be confrontational. I see nothing wrong in saying that one doesn't think the other's point is valid or that they don't have a point on a subject. We all can get bad ideas in our head at times. I certainly have. I wasn't saying that you were a bad person or ignorant or anything like that, just that on that one point, one issue, I didn't there was any merit to it. Hey, I could be wrong, but that's just how I see it. Peace.
Look at where Oakland was two years ago and look at where they are today. That's what a good GM and coach will do for you and why everybody should be fired.
Sorry but our RBs and WRs are JAGs - even with Decker and there's a chance he ain't going to be back. Jury's out on the D-Line particularly the way they played this season. OL and secondary are atrocious and in desperate need of a complete overhaul. And we don't know what we got in regards to QB - It ain't going to be pretty next year - we have to hit on FA and Draft to help overcome the holes on this team - and with our history, well I'll leave it at that. Oh - the only way I'd have Tyrod Taylor on this team is if he'd consider switching to WR.
Snacks still comes off the field on 3rd down, where-as Mo is a 3 down player. Jets are barely missing a beat in terms of the run defense, hasn't killed us yet. Giants needed a run-stuffer, we didn't. Plus Deon Simon looks to be getting better and we could eventually be getting the same production for the fraction of the price. Janoris Jenkins was the best signing for them IMO. Dude is playing at an All-Pro level, he was so inconsistent with the Rams.
I havent noticed Wilkerson doing much on 3rd down and that Jets run defense hasnt looked so sharp. I'd say its a question where stats are decieving but then again the 1-10 Niners put up 248 yards rushing yesterday. I don't see whats wrong with suggesting that Wilkerson vs. Harrison decision, so far, is looking to be a big swing and miss for Macc. You wanna say lets wait and see in a year or 2 how that decision looks? that's fine, but right now? not so good
Barely missing a beat? We were 2nd in run defense last year and 17th this year. i think we are minning a lot of beats without him. Or maybe our DL just sucks, that's how they have played anyway.
I think Wilk is still injured and for the most part is primarily playing the role of an outside rusher, that's not his forte, you want to move Wilk around the line and if possible have him rush the passer as a DT in those 4 man fronts. It's been an uncharacteristic season for Wilk no doubt, but I think he will bounce back. We faced David Johnson, Carlos Hyde, Jay Ayaji and Bell. Giants faced Elliot twice and they didn't really stop him yesterday. Bell went off on them the week before. Both Jets and Giants have allowed exactly 333 rushing yards. I hope Simon continues to grow because we can get close to the production of Snacks but for a fraction of the price.
We've allowed the same # of rushing yards as the Giants, since yesterday however we are at 4.0 YPC in terms of defense, Giants are at 3.3, but we've faced some tough running-backs too. Not worried about the run defense right now, the pass defense is really something that needs to be fixed. Would I pay Snacks the deal the Giants gave him? Absolutely not ... big fan of Snacks, but he's still a 2 down lineman, still not getting many sacks. We have his replacement on the roster.
competitve rebuild is another way of saying : short-term /quick fix. that method is a mike tannenbaum/bill parcells plan. works great with large cap spending for a short time. giants gm spent like $200 MILLION in contracts to fix their defense. we also used the short cut fix in the past. we now know that the best way to succeed long-term is to do what the packers and steelers do. draft and develop. you can pay your own guys to keep them, or if they want too much, let them walk. if you implement the system properly, you already have their replacements ready to take over. this method requires a coaching staff that can develop players, and a gm/scouting operation that can hit on more draft picks and ufa signings than they miss. mac would have been better off going full rebuild two years ago, and now he should emulate idzik and cut a bunch of overpaid veterans . the lack of preperation when games start indicates he may have to overhaul the assistant coaching staff also. i give the bills credit for axing the oc after the jets smoked them in week two. we have not made any changes until now, other than finally putting some of the younger guys on the field. we kept too many non-performing veterans and coaches on the payroll, active during games it is going to be an interesting offseason. i cut revis, clady, giacomini, fitzpatrick to start. i then look at freeing up more cap space. i look for at least two offensive tackles in the draft, more linebackers and safeties with coverage speed. cornerbacks may need adjusting, as skrine and gilchrist may be wise cuts for cap space. we may be able to get bye with safarian- jenkens and bostich at tight end for short term. i would roll with petty and a chaep vet backup until hackenberg is ready to be the backup. follow the green bay formula and look in the later round for another developmental qb, perhaps from a div 2 or 3 college. short summation: what you have been doing has not worked , so change it! stop wasting cap space on free agents and draft choices on other team's discards. as vince lombardi once said " how can i expect to beat you with players who were not good enough to make your team?"
Realistically we should've dealt Wilkerson when we could've the past two years. At the time I thought his contract was a bit of a bargain compared to Fletcher Cox, yet it looks pretty bad right now. If we could've gotten a second round pick for both Wilk and Richardson we would've been in pretty good shape to rebuild this team especially with the emergence of the man-child that is Leonard Williams. Instead we'll be lucky to get a 4th rounder for Richardson. The whole situation was botched. Never invest big money like that in a player that isn't an edge rusher or a cornerback. Instead we're stuck with a bunch of slow plodding 3techniques playing out of position. I bet Maccagnan feels like a real idiot in not taking those possible second round offers for either Wilk or Richardson when he could've. Wilk's cap number jumps up to fucking $18 million per year next year. He better earn his keep.
As much as I hate that Wilk has played like a slug after his new contract, what asshole is really shaming people about not signing Sheldon? He is a dogshit human being and still whenever a microphone is in his face all he talks about is money. I hope he ends up in prison, even though he's a good football player. He has no soul. He's garbage as a person. Wilk at least has some hope. Sheldon is going to die in a motel room with an underage hooker and a pound of blow.
I for one think you are severely underestimating Richardson. He will die in a hotel room with an underage hooker and five pounds of blow.
Good post. I agree with you. One thing to remember is that he HAD to spend a ton of money, so that meant signing some high profile, big contract FAs. The crux of the matter as far as I'm concerned is was it Mac's idea to do the "competitive rebuild", did Woody order him to do things that way, or did Woody just make such a strong statement about making the playoffs and not having a losing season, that Mac felt like he needed to get a winning season in the bank to buy him some time to try to do a real rebuild? If it was Mac's idea, then we could perhaps chalk it up to a rookie mistake, one that we hope he learned his lesson from, and will do better going forward. It could also mean that he may not be the GM we need to turn things around. For certain, from this point forward he needs to start finding more players in the draft who will have an immediate impact on the team's fortunes (in a positive way), and start finding some younger, cheaper FAs to fill holes and improve the depth across the board. In addition to Revis, Clady, Giacomini and Fitzpatrick, I'd probably give Mangold his walking papers as well, but I hope for his sake (and the Jets' sake) that he'll retire. Harris can still contribute at a higher level and he helped with Lee's development this season. Gilchrist would be another cut. I think the Jets will have to wait another year to cut Skrine. They would have a $3.5 million cap savings by cutting him, but replacing 3/4 of their starting defensive backfield would be a tough chore. Replacing half of them would be hard enough. If they did cut him as well, they'd almost certainly be drafting 2 CBs and starting at least 1 of them. I think that ASJ has looked pretty good. If he has been working hard, and his attitude has improved, then I think the Jets should definitely bring him back. Bostick has been decent, but the TEs have gotten so few opportunities under Gailey that it's hard to tell. I think the Jets should definitely look to draft a TE somewhere in the 3rd-5th round range. I don't know anything about Eric Tomlinson, the TE they signed of another team's PS. They still have Braedon Bowman on their PS. It will be interesting to see if the Jets keep him, Tomlinson or keep Bostick instead. One thing I will give Bowles credit for is that he told Gailey to start using the TE position more. Hopefully, next season we'll see the TE position have a much greater impact on the performance of our offense.
