We selected the #1 rated DE and Pass Rusher, a sure top 5 pick in 2011 at 16 and Rex plays him 16 snaps because Pitts line was big, Coples speed and explosiveness would exploit that size
draft, always best to get your own RB's on the free agent market are expensive, well good ones anyway
i'd rather have picked dan marino, warren sapp, and peyton manning. but you know, you win some you lose some
We can play The Hindsight Game lots. It can be really fun, like hitting yourself in the head with a frying pan! In 2000, we should've taken Brady with the 179th pick instead of Tony Scott, CB, NC State. Yeah, that's what we should've done. Then we could've traded Pennington, who we drafted in round 1 that, for someone really really awesome like Shaun Alexander. Yeah, we should've done that too.
I would have drafted a RB or a LB with speed. Its really too early to tell if this guy was worth the pick.
I wanted Stephen Hill with the pick. I obviously don't understand the draft, but I am glad it all worked out.
To start out with, I like our Picks and thier progress. With Wilk, Ellis, and Coples we have the potential for a great Dline. I think the funny thing was I was dead set against both our first two picks @16. I wanted nothing to do with Hill in round one, he was far too raw. Coples has talent, but Rex running him through LB drills made me think he wanted to draft him as a OLB. I wanted no part of that combined with his reported hot and cold motor. Coples as a 34 DE is a bit undersized in the classic 34, but fits the more hybird styles well. He has the talent to be a difference maker if he puts the work in. Not beliveing the Rex Ryan hype machine so far, bcause despite his good preseason he kept him out for the most part in pittsburgh. If the kid was learning as fast as we fans think, the coaches need to find a way to get him in the game plan. I think he has the physical talents to be our best Dlinman since the sack exchange if he can have the attitude to match it. Hill in round two was good value and I'm happy with where he is despite his quiet day. Receiver takes some adjustment time to the NFL speed and he was very raw to begin with. As for my picks I wont play the hind sight game, I was in love with DeCastro and Upshaw heading into the draft for the Jets. Cordy Glenn was another I could see aiding our line. Playing the hindsight game, I'll take the Bucs Doug Martin 8 days a week. Small but powerful and able to cut and accelerate through the hole. He has the abilitty to make guys miss on the second lvl that Green lacks. Picking him could have changed the look of this offense.
He played DE in 2011, he played DT in 2010 which was his best year at NC. Going into the draft some sites had him rated as the #1 DE in the draft. Some had him behind Ingrham or Nick perry. I think only NFLNW's Mike Mayock had your boy Jones at the top of the list, on which Coples is second.
Becasue its less painful then rewatching the game and trying to figure out what the hell happened to our ofense.
heh, Hill was being touted at one point as a possible 1st round pick for us happy with coples so far.
You're right about the years, I was thinking about his junior year at DT, which was when he had much more success than he did his senior year.
For two games, I can maybe give him a pass, but if he's not playing like a young Richard Seymour by Week 4, cut him!
the whole thing is a crap shoot - as many experienced personnel guys would tell us, the fans......especially dick haley who once worked for the jets. he also said the best way a team can go about their picks is to take the guy they believe will make the most impact on their team - not necessarily the best player available. now u can argue besides coples - the impact position the jets really need is at LB and OL. coples is a fine pick and will improve any defense, in time. HOWEVER - he may not stand out as that impact player on the jets D.... and thats OK as long as u have that guy in the front 7. as of now the jets do not and thats what the defense is lacking. can u folks imagine if a clay matthews, JPP, demarcus ware, or suggs would do to a unit that already boasts a young and very fomidable DL, david harris, and an all-world CB. it would be close to lights out. as far as the OL - the jets rebuilt 2/5ths of their OL in 2006 with 2 high picks. they need to do that again soon - like next year, IMO. will they be able to keep both ferguson and mangold?? time to plan now for that.
ahh. - thats the player he most reminds me of. no doubt. seymour wasn't flashy and BB didn't ask for that. just do the dirty work, get 5-6 sacks/year, and bat down a few passes. its no coincidence that the pats D started to turn when seymour was picked in 2001.
Dont'a Hightower was my 1st choice for the Jet's Rd 1 selection. I think New England got two solid players in Hightower & Jones in Rd 1, too bad we have to face them twice a year. D. Davis pick proved the Jets wanted to address the MLB position for the future. DeCastro was my 2nd choice. As far as Coples, I wasn't thrilled with the pick, but I didn't think he would be available at #16. So far, Coples is doing OK, let's hope he continues to improve and doesn't get lazy.
