I can remember every Final Four from the 80s but I can't tell you any of the past 5 or 6 years, for whatever reason. Except Maryland in 2002, I used to live there so I root for them.
The funny thing is we only made one good play in that whole game and it caused that fight. I think Ryan wanted to run out the half and Gilbride called for a pass. Jeff Lageman stripped the ball from the QB for a fumble and Ryan went nuts.
That was one of the worst losses ever. Blanchard i think beat us when he was with the colts i think -- you are right -- he missed 3 that game.
Or was it the other way around? Blair Thomas was the #2 pick in the draft, we had a lot riding on him, too. Dennis Byrd was supposed to be a pillar of the D line, Al Toon had to retire in his prime, a lot of shit went wrong that wasn't all Coslet's fault.
That houston game was another one of the top 10 losses. It was sort of like 2002 -- where they needed a slew of things to happen and then win. I think that the jet houston game was at night -- but i could be wrong. THey certainly lost. Didnt show up.
It was a Sunday night game and the Jets were out of it from the opening kickoff. They were bullied and beat up by Houston all night. They couldn't do anything. It was a total embarrassment with Houston having nothing to play for. Add the fact that Ryan and Gilbride broke out into a fist fight on the sideline and it still didn't deter Houston. I thought it was one of the Jets lowest points of the nineties.
Id have to think about the top ten regular season losses (the playoff losses are all hard to take). There alot of bad ones -- but ill take into account whether the game had an effect on the season or whether it was a big game. Here are my first seven--in no particular order 1. The Detroit Home Game where Hall Missed the FG to make the playoffs 2. The Leon Johnson Game to make the playoffs 3. The Fake Spike--Jets went into nose dive for rest of season (no pun intended) 4. The Houston Game to Make the Playoffs 5. 1980--Loss to New Orleans. Jets finished 4-12 that year but the 'Aints came in in December 0-14 and beat the jets 21-20. Saints finished 1-15. 6. 1984--Loss to colts 9-5. Jets were 6-4. Colts were 3-7. I recall the game was in a downpour. Jets always played 6-3,7-6 games against bad teams. This was a killer. (See 6-0 loss the year after to much better colt team) 7. 1993 -- Loss to colts 9-6 to 4-12 colts. Win makes the jets 8-4. They beat skins 3-0 next week then lose next three to miss playoffs
I was watching that game in a motel room at Myrtle Beach. Always will be one of my favorite games. Miami was the only team the Jets beat that season with a winning record; and the loss put them at 8-8 as well, which really isn't saying much for the teams we beat to get there. I remember Jeff Lageman saying we were the ugly girl at the dance, but we came to dance anyway. By the way, if we had kicked 3 FGs in the 4th quarter against Houston in the WC game instead of going for it on 4th down a couple times and failing, we would have won and gone on to Denver the next week. Denver ended up getting trashed in the Superbowl, that could have been us getting trashed. Oh, well...
we were the lowest seed, if we had beaten Houston we would have gone to Buffalo and Denver didn't lose in the SB they lost at Buf in the title game and Buf was crushed in the SB.
I believe that Blanchard missed three field goals that day. Imagine if TGG.com existed at the time? The next Sunday the Jets had to have about 4-5 games go right for them the next Sunday to have a shot at the playoffs and they all did (including a great comeback by the Pats over the Dolphins). Of course, the Jets got blown out by the Houston Oilers in the famous Ryan / Gilbright fiasco.
Somehow I remember the Jets once running two draw plays in a row. If my hazy memory banks are correct they ran draws on both third and fourth down with 15+ yards to go each time.
The useless, ineffective draw play in long yardage has been a staple of our offense for decades, it trancends coaching staffs. I remember Walt Michaels using it in the 70s, Joe Walton, Rich Kotite, Herm, you name it. It's why 3rdAnd15Draw is my favorite username on this board. Nothing says "Jets message board" more than that.
Thanks for reminding me about that Raider win via clock-cheating..Al Davis always had all bases covered....I was working an AES show that year(audio engineering show) and a raider rep was watched as he ordered microphones for long-range eavesdropping. I wonder how he used em....Preparation is the key and Raiders(Weird Ole Al) did everything they could to get an edge
I've still never seen or heard an explaination of what happened. The clock was moving as it should have been, then it stopped long enough for the Raiders to line up and get a play off. Without the stoppage they run out of time and we win. Of course they scored the winning TD, but there was never a reason given for the clock, unless there was and I missed it. Coslet might hold the franchise record for most losses within the last :20 of a game.
This is a very good thread. There really isn't anything for me to add here. You guys have covered the Coslet years (1990-93) quite well. Frightenly well. After this joyous walk down memory lane, I think I'll go throw up now..... Very frustrating four years....
In hindsight, it sure was, but at the time, coming after Joe Walton, Coslet was like a breath of fresh air and optimism. Kind of like . . . never mind. Coslet got stuck with some bad personnel moves, hopefully we won't have a repeat. Reminds me, why isn't Schlegel playing? Is there a bridge anywhere I can jump off of . . . .
