I get where you are coming from, but the O-line is not what it used to be, and it took MAJOR steps beck last year. Let's just go over the O-Line: Kendall - Solid, but getting old fast Moore - Very solid player and consistent, a keeper Jones - IMO not good, but I will give him the benefit of the doubt and say "project" and the jury is still out - can go either way Teagues - old, here for veteran leadership Cavka - major project, coming off a major injury Morley - project Snell - project Missant - project Katnick - project, but rumored to have a big upside, a keeper for depth Gragg - Retired Goodwin - gone to NO McKenzie - still gone Mawae - gone Fabini - gone, thank God That looks pretty bad to me. The depth is still not good and there is no long term stability. And the ability of a Line (D and O) to be dominant and function well is chemistry. And the only way to get chemistry is to have stability on the line and let them gel together for a year. The line has to much turnover to be good next year, no matter what. So why not infuse the line with good young prospects (by that I mean first day draft picks), and have them learn behind the vets. The line is nowhere near what it was, and needs an overhaul. But it is not going to happen overnight. Even if you bring in vets, with that much turnover, it would take them awhile to build that chemistry. And so far for depth only one player was added, the rest of the depth is made up of Bradway projects. IMO at least, the FO is going to draft 2-4 OL in this draft, and give them all the time they need to develop as a unit. The play of the OL is not going to be very good next year, don't expect it to, but in 2 years is when it should start paying dividends. ANd if it is going to take time for the line to develop, why not (if he is there) add the best OT pass blocker draft prospect in years to the mix? Is he a sexy pick? No. A sure thing? No. But no draft prospect is. No matter how you cut it, the future of the line as it stands now, is pretty dismal.
I don't love the line and I wasn't floored by Jones last year but he was better than Moore who is at best mediocre. On a solid line Moore may well be a value player but he is far from a real good player. The biggest problem on our line is at RT and up the middle. As much as Jones didn't shine last year anyone would have been killed to the inside with the mass confusion in general. Until we sure up the middle and the OL starts to operate as a unit you can't make any judgment regarding Jones. He actually looked fairly good handling the outside rush. When the inside of the line stinks the LT will look like he has been exposed when he may not have been. I would prefer to draft a big push the line of scrimmage RT and build up the middle of the line before giving up on Jones and spending a fortune on a LT who will be just as exposed to the inside as Jones was last year. If we take D?Brick I wouldn?t be upset I just think based on the current roster it would not be the best value play for us.
I was just trying to evaluate the line as a whole, wasn't trying to focus on Jones. I agree the middle of the line is still bad. IMO, the Jets should come out with a C, RT, LT, and a future G behind Kendall. 2-4 players for the OL. Moore was solid last year and has been, but that is just my personal evaluation. I could be wrong, hell if I knew how to evaulate players well I would be a GM now right. The point I was trying to make is the OL from top to bottom is looking pretty bad as it stands right now. Anyone who thinks that just by adding 1 or 2 players to it, the line will pick up where it left off is fooling themselves. The single most important thing to both lines is chemistry. And with this many different faces, that chemistry is going to take time to build. There is no way around it.
