I don't know for sure but I can swear I remember more than a few plays last year where he was completely toasted on one on one coverage in the #2CB slot.
Believe it or not, while I can't say "never", I can't think of an instance where Strait played #2 corner. Strait always played inside, as it seemed they had him pigeon holed to play inside.
It could be that it was NB duty last year where he was playing on an outside receiver, but I could swear that he was inserted on a few instances into #2 territory. Hey, I've been wrong before. There was that time back in 1984....
That's good depth. Strait is just as unproven as Smith... The Jets have their for sure starter in Rhodes...And have 3 other safties vying for the other spot(Coleman,Smith,Washington)...That leaves two safties their, and Maddox, 3 backup safties who will contribute on special teams...Some teams only have 1 backup at safety, Jets have depth there.
Is it depth? Sure, it's extra bodies. Is it quality depth? No. If Rhodes was to go down for the season the dropoff in talent is considerable.
And even WITH Strait the dropoff in talent is considerable... I was a big fan of Strait coming out, Herm and his Cover-2 I thought he could do well in it, but injuries and not being able to beat out some average starters hurt him and his stay in NY... He made a nice play the other night to force the Campbell INT but he's a pretty below-average player... Washington has had in-game experience, but like you said, the talent level between him and Rhodes is pretty wide.
I wouldn't buy that one- a little too steep for my taste, unless of course you are offering a premier NT, which wouldn't happen.
Strait to Cleveland for a 4th. McCareins to Kansas City or Atlanta for a 3rd. Seeing as we paid more for both initially, and considering those teams are desperate at those positions, it seems fair to me. But that's just my humble opinion.
Strait to the Browns looks doubtful now: The Browns acquired defensive back Therrian Fontenot from Green Bay for Wide Receiver Carlton Brewster.
