Could not agree more. 2013 = weak draft save Richardson. With all the picks he had in 2014 and with what we got, no way you call 2014 a good draft. Wasted their third round pick on a guy who hardly PLAYED his senior year of college and is now hurt again.
I have said it before but somehow keep getting ignored...the Richardson pick was heavily influenced,it was reported after the draft, by Ryan. HEAVILY! Idzik didn't want to go d-line because we already were loaded but Rex demanded...or so it was written. And, I believe it due to Idzik's conservative nature and modus operandi. So, that makes Idzik's actual draft impact even worse!
how do you know rex has influence over the picks? also, sheldon wasn't an easy pick at all. i follow the draft 365 days a year and most people had richardson in the 15-32 range. also to call milliner a bad pick because of his injuries is asinine as he didnt miss a game because of injuries in college
I remember that there were a number of reports that Rex REALLY had to convince Idzik to pull the trigger on Richardson...reports from pretty reputable folks. I can't comment about Milliner.
Yea the 5 major surgerys he has had wasn't a red flag, there were better players to draft at that point he wasn't even close to BPA.Calvin Pryor hasn't even shown flashes of being decent regardless of playing out of position or not. He's playing out of position due to a lack of depth by John Idzik.Ha Ha Clinton Dix has looked great in Green Bay we will see how Manziel looks this week I wanted us to move down a little bit and draft him
I'm still pissed that we waited to take a WR until the 4th round and then took ... gulp ... Saunders and Evans. That was beyond idiotic considering the quality of this WR class and our need at the position. Idzik is to blame for that as he ultimately controls the draft, but I think Rex heavily influenced those picks. Certainly, our secondary was also a need that was not addressed in FA - that too is on Idzik - so we drafted a hard hitting safety and CB to appease Rex. The big TE who can get open for short passes and move the chains on 3rd and short - that too reeks of ground and pound. Problem is, this is no longer a ground and pound league and hard hitting safeties are being neutralized by player safety rules. Rex's philosophy hasn't worked, and the enthusiasm he once brought about changing the culture around the team is gone. It's time for a change. Idzik, for all of his fuck ups, has only been here two years and has been saddled with that coaching philosophy. Perhaps he deserves another year or two to carry out his "plan" and hire his guy, but I don't think it's going to happen with all of this blood in the water. That lack of continuity and job security is going to hurt us when we try to hire another GM.
Ummmm...wrong...who is the GM and who is the coach?? There is no way in flippin' hell you can sit there and tell me that John Idzik didn't draft a WR until the 4th round because Rex told him not to...REALLY? Oh, I'm sure that Rex was behind not bringing in a decent FA CB either...yeah, that really smacks of Rex Ryan. Oh, let's not forget that Richardson would be on another team if not for Rex PLEADING with Idzik to draft him...I guess pleading is a bit much but reports say it was along those lines. EVERY FA pickup other than Ivory and Decker.... No, I've had enough of John Idzik. Period...he can go by way of the DoDo and I'll be happy to see him leave at this point. I don't care if he had $100 million in kitty...I have ZERO confidence in his ability to spend appropriately and draft successfully.
While the OP in effect asks for a binary choice, I think it is clear enough that both Ryan and Idzik are problems. Having said that, I also think Idzik is the bigger problem of the two. In addition to the widely noted concerns about his drafts, too many of his FA signings, and I also think both non-moves and ill advised cuts to the roster, it is quite problematic that he and the CS do not seem on the same page regarding overall team strategy. While that in large measure began as a problem of Woodrow's making, I think it fair to say that Idzik took the job with the obligation he was committed to working with Ryan. One need not accept the conspiracy theory that Idzik has purposely undermined that relationship to nonetheless conclude he has not helped make it work. When the net result is 2-11, that is a firing offense. As for Ryan, I feel sorry for him being in effect expected to run a D with fuckups for corners and safeties whose "talents" don't match the D's needs. And overall I think Ryan has been saddled with a woeful Qb at the insistence of Idzik. But there's also a long list of problems that are mostly or entirely of Ryan's own making. Lack of attention to the O, and not just on game day, is a longterm issue. Losing the locker room down the stretch in 12 is something he seems to a somewhat lesser extent to be having again as players seem to perceive Ryan has less than full control over who plays and who doesn't. Also related are the several instances where the team seemed flat or otherwise unprepared for games. I could go on about both, but they're both problems, and while Idzik is the bigger problem, they should both go. Certainly the Jets do not want to repeat firing the GM and retaining the HC, forcing the next GM to accept him. I suppose if Woodrow fires Idzik and says it's up to the next GM to either retain or fire Ryan, that might be minimally acceptable. But it could present timing problems if it takes too long to get a new GM. I suppose timing problems will be an issue in any event, though. It is what it is.
I'll do my best...I did a cursory search and, thanks to the passage of time, I'm going to need to weed through hundreds of thousands of articles...I'm sure I'll find ONE. Having said that, I distinctly remember it being a topic of discussion and I never put my name to speculation...soo....I'll see what I can dig up.
I think we should give Idzik the standard 3 years needed to grade a draft. And that includes players selected by the Jets who were cut and signed by other teams. Like Saunders. As for Rex like Sanchez he's regressed. He got 6 years. He has to be out! But the basic question of this post is interesting. We could talk about this for months (and we will).
First the Jets have been in most of their games. It's up to the coach then to be able to secure those Ws. That includes clock management, penalties etc.
That's kind of the hope...LOL!! I think it's a very intriguing prospect that definitely requires much deliberation. You got it Dom! As I said...I'll do my best!
Again talent isn't so unequal. Esp. after injuries. So many if not most of the games are fairly close. It is expected that a good team wins their fair share of them not lose them all like Rex in '14.
