Atleast Mac was thinking about the future when he handed out massive contracts to veterans last season

it was a mistake. He makes 6M per year, and we gave Breno 4.5M per year.
penny wise, pound foolish. our RT situation hasn't been the same since.

If the Jets were in on Osmele than they are looking to replace Brick whether it's through the draft or a FA . Keep an eye on a cheaper stop gap like Penn or Beachem.

We have the highest paid offensive line in football. Got to feel Breno is going bye bye ... Winters would if we had more options.

But at the time that Howard left, he wanted a salary that wasn't commensurate with his level of play and that was higher than what many other RTs were making. I disagree.

Please. Howard wasn't all that. You're making him out to be a great player. He isn't.

U didn't watch the games. You've mentioned it before so stop pretending.

You also stated we couldn't afford howard which is plain incorrect. We had plenty of money for the 2014 offseason but idzik chose to save 1.5M while downgrading the position.

I'm not trying to portray him as great. I'm saying he was worth 6M and that idzik managed to downgrade RT. I'd cut Breno in a beat to get Howard back.

The Raiders who gutted the roster the year before( we're so far under the salary salary cap floor) that they had to over spend to catch up. There is no way the Jets were going to be able to match what the Raiders offered him. . I believe they front loaded the contract, and gave him 8 million dollars that first year.( no way could, or should the Jets have matched that offer).

How many years have the Jets neglected drafting the tackle position. ( you have to be willing to make investment in that position with high picks. That didn't happen , and why the Jets are in this position now.

I don't pretend. I'm not like some posters. I haven't been able to see that many games over the last 2 seasons. But was able to see more in 2013 and prior seasons. Regardless of how many games I actually saw, I saw enough to know that Howard was asking for more than he was worth. You're the only one who thinks he was worth it. I remember the discussions at the time and while most Jets fans hated to lose him, they thought he was being greedy and asking for too much money, and agreed with Idzik for not paying it.

Having room under the salary cap isn't the only consideration when determining whether a team can "afford" to pay a player a certain amount. GMs have to determine the level of play of each player and put a dollar amount on that. If a player wants significantly more than the dollar amount the GM has assigned to his play, then the team can't "afford" him. If a GM caves every time a player asks for more money than he's worth, there will always be cap problems in future seasons and every agent will seek even more strongly to gouge that team. GMs have to show agent's that they're tough and that they have limits to what they'll pay.

Idzik was a disaster, but I'm sure that his intent was not to downgrade to position. He just failed to secure an adequate replacement that was as good or better than Howard. I think you've forgotten that salaries have skyrocketed in the last 3 years. $6 million was a lot for an average RT in 2014.

Thanks. Yes, you're correct, there's no way the Jets could have or should have matched that $8 million figure. Both Tanny and Idzik failed to address the OT positions in the draft, and that's why we're in the mess we're in now.

The Jets had a ton of cap room in 2014 also.
We could have matched it. It was 6M per year (5yr 30M)......how you structure the cap hit by year doesn't really matter to the player. they care about the guaranteed portion.

The Raiders chose to give 7.9M in year 1, as that allowed them to offer more guaranteed money than the Jets, while still allowing them to cut Howard in year 2 if needed, without too much dead money.

Idzik balked at the guaranteed portion, and at the 6M per year.

I was pissed at the time, as Howard was in his prime, and we swapped him with Breno to save 1.5M per year.
was a terrible move starting the single worst offseason i've ever witnessed a GM have.
funny because on this board i was pissed, but there were still plenty of people defending Idzik.
after a few more of those suspect moves that same offseason, the crowd quickly turned and banners followed.
