Maybe I'm jaded but every year there's a underdog receiver that tears it up during training camp. Then disappears when the season starts.
Kerley is our primary slot receiver. He is absolutely the second best receiver on this team but I'm talking about outside.
Like who? I'm basing my opinion off of what I've seen of him this far. I never had a feeling for another no name receiver like I do, Salas.
Agreed But he's 25 years old and is already on his 4th NFL team. If the guy was a player most likely he would have stuck somewhere by now.
I think it does actually, we just didn't have healthy/ good receivers to pull it off last year. Just look at the Eagles or Lions offense under MM. It was not an alternating scheme all game long. Maybe a play here or there but there was absolute consistenty with those starters. The only position that I see being a big alternating approach is RB.
Who tore it up last year? It is a real question. Other than the Sanchez injury fiasco (which I found to be a blessing), I don't recall shit from preseason 2013 (mostly on purpose) because there is usually nothing worth remembering about preseasons. I do recall Leroy Kinard looking real good as a runner in 1991, but he got injured in the last game and never made it in the NFL. I recall Mario Bailey leading the Jets in receptions one preseason and not making the final cut. Then, of course, there was Wayne Chrebet. Other than Bailey and Chrebet, I don't remember any Jets underdog WRs having really big preseasons.
Different sport, but Jose Bautista played with four MLB teams in one season before he became good. Salas is not going to become a star but he can become a guy who sees regular action even if only as a 3rd or 4th receiver.
None of those names ever impressed me. Good depth players at best, none of those guys ever made me really pay attention to them because of something I seen out of them. Salas is showing consistent play and a lot of good things that make you think he could have a lot of potential given the chance. My view between those players and Salas are extremely different.
He has been successful on the outside for us and that is really overlooked by many. When we go with a 2 WR formation it should be decker and kerley under normal circumstances. I suspect those two will lead the pack with snaps by seasons end barring injury.
I'm not saying he can't play in the league. Certainly anything can happen, but I just dont see him as a starting caliber player is all. To many guys have strong preseasons and then fizzle out when the season starts.
I am guilty of this. Kerley, feels and looks like a slot, but he plays #2. Anyway you slice it, he is absolutely clutch on 3rd down; vital.
Yeah, I don't think he is a future star either. I'd rather have Salas over Hill, Gates or Ford, though.
Kerley is our second best receiver but he's best suited as a slot receiver. Doesn't mean he will see the field all that much less. So the second starting receiver spot may well come down to Salas/Nelson.
