Westhoff was signing his praises on the pre-game show yesterday He said he's the fastest player on the team
Yeah you guys are right. I think Decker, Kerley Salas and Nelson are locks. Think battle is for a speedy guy which means Hill has to beat out Gates and Hakim. If he can't do that, then it's time to try and trade or cut him
I'm so tired of Clyde Gates being on this roster its not even funny. The guy is a grease fire that can't catch a cold. I don't know what the coaching staff sees in him other than a guy that can run in a straight line. At least Hill can block, has a big-bodied frame and was a "project" to begin with.
With Ford's miscues, Hill not getting it done and Gates doing nothing imo to earn his spot, Salas looks virtually definite to make the team. Having said that, it's still not clear to me who should be the #2 wr.
Kerley will be the #2. He will move to the slot on 3 wr sets or even workout of the slot with a t.e. split wide. But when there are only 2 wr's on the field it be decker and kerley most of the time
On receiving talent I agree but David Nelson can block also. I think he's got a shot to be on the field on 1st down a lot this season.
I'd keep Salas over both Hill and Gates. I think the choice should be between Hill and Gates. Hold your nose and pick one.
I also would pick Salas first in that group. As between Gates and Hill, I expect the FO would lean toward Hill, while quite possibly the CS would pick Gates(don't know why - Ryan seems to like him, but why he does is a mystery to me). In other words, politics may decide who stays.
These #'s attributed to the receivers drive me nuts! Salas is a kid that's got talent and I'm pulling for the kid to make the cut. Nelson is a very underrated WR IMO and is often overlooked or undervalued IMO. Decker, Kearly, Nelson, Salas would be a very solid group of wideouts .
If Stephen Hill makes the roster and not Salas, than this team is a fucking joke. I also believe Salas is better than Nelson.
Yeah, Kerley will be out there on obvious passing downs more often than Nelson. I think Nelson will play more on 1st down. This assuming he doesn't wind up as a surprise cut, which I think is unlikely. He's the most predictable WR the Jets have at the moment, they know exactly what they are going to get out of him. Decker isn't as predictable because they know they will get an excellent season out of him but they might get a great one instead.
I think Salas has done enough to get the 5th spot, I think we'll carry 6 consisting of Decker, Kerley, Hill, Nelson, Salas and Saunders. I think he can come in and make a few plays in in a relief situation, since that's what he did last year. Maybe he can do a bit more than he did last year, but people really over rate what he did last year. He mostly just caught a few screen passes and did something with them. Screens are the easiest way to get yards for a WR, and although he's looked solid so far in preseason he doesn't look like starting material to me. He's a hard worker and consistent, so I don't have a problem with him on the team but I think we need to be realistic about how much time he'll actually have out there.
Hakim beat out Ford and Gates. Salas beat out Hill and Gates. Saunders hasn't done shite, but makes this team as the developmental guy short of being placed on IR. I think Hill's only shot at this point is if the Jets keep 7 WR. If they keep 25 offensive players, i believe 9 OL (Aboushi can't be the backup OT), 3 TE. That would leave only 6 between QB and RB, meaning D Richardson and Simms would have to be cut. It's a tough numbers game for Hill right now, unless Saunders isn't healthy to start the season.
I think Hill will get a lot of time on the field because of his blocking ability. I think he's the best blocking WR we have and that will only help our run game. I really liked what I've been seeing from our running game and honestly our line has looked pretty solid to me. I think penalties will get cleaned up but I love the fire they've been playing with, it's an excellent sign. I believe we will do a good job of setting up the passing game by having a strong run game, and I think Hill is the best way to do that.
Did he mean for the season or for the Eagles game? I haven't seen the presser so I genuinely have no idea. Hakim made a couple good plays on ST coverage too but I'm pretty surprised if he's going to make the team.
