Kellen Starts!!! Sep 12 ESPNews reports New York Jets QB Kellen Clemens will start the team's Week 2 game.
I definitely think Clemens could win the job if he starts on Sunday. But it would take a really excellent performance to do that. If he's equal to or only slightly better than Chad, then it probably won't happen.
No it's not, it's your opinion. If he lights it up, I believe he can win the job and Chad will mysteriously be listed as questionable/doubtful for the following week(s) whether or not he's truly injured. It will be very interesting to see how our offense as a whole changes if KC is successful.
It should also be noted that Belicheck pulled Bledsoe for Brady when Brady was a lot more unherelded. If Clemens plays well, he will play, period. That being said, I don't see him playing that well.
He would have to play absolutely spectacular imo. It will take more than just a solid game and a win, he'd have to carry the team to a win with a big day. Even then, I don't know, it's only one game. It's hard to declare someone the starter before the season, and bench them after they played one game, a game they played well in.
Bledsoe wasn't ready to come back the next week though, was he? I don't really remember actually. I think if Chad was out 6 weeks, and Clemens comes in and plays well and the team goes 4-2, he would absolutely take over. I can't see it happening after one game, unless Clemens goes out and shows he is without a doubt a better player, and that is tough to prove in one start, in your first significant action.
This may sound a bit crazy but I will say it anyway. I think Chad knows this is his last year in NY. I was watching his news conference (Monday's I think it was) and I saw the look in his eyes. I think the fans cheering his misfortune did something. I think he has lost the desire to play here now and I would not be surprised if he wanted out of NY after this season. The look in his eyes said it all, like he was a faithful dog and the owner kicked it in the ribs. Sure the dog will still eat from that owners hand but in the back of it's mind it will never forget. IMHO
I believe, regardless of Clemens performance on Sunday, Chad is back at #1 when ready........however, I do think if clemens has a solid performance, and Chad struggleas at any point the remainder of the season, there may be a short leash.
you may be reading it to it too much, I'm sure Chad will get a pretty rousing reception from the fans when he returns, at least I hope he does....but you may be right anyway, it could very well be his last year depending on how things go
too many bad posts in this thread - Let's be real about this...YES, Kellen Clemens is the future QB of the NY Jets. We've discussed this a million times before Chad's injury. In order to reach the next level, the Jets need a QB who can throw downfield. The Jets invested in Clemens, and they need to find out what they have, or if they need to find a QB in the offseason. Yes, Clemens can certainly win the starting job if he shows Mangini he can be the guy to take the team to the next level. This business about a player not losing their job due to injury is an old wives tale. Most of the players who win starting jobs in the NFL get their break when the guy in front of them goes down...
I got tickets to the Jets vs Dolphins game so, hopefully I'll be fortunate enough to check out Chad and Kellen. Not likely, but it would be cool. Who-ever the QB is, I hope they beat the dog sh-t out of the Phins......
Being a Chad fan I still believe that virtually anybody in this league can lose their job if they gets injured and the guy after him plays lights out. Therefore, it will really depend on how Clemens plays and how well the Jets O responds. If they start throwing the ball long successfully (and IMHO it's important to complete the long ball - not just throw it) and the Jets offense lights it up I can see Clemens taking over permanently. If the Jets score about 20 points and Clemens throws a pick or two I doubt that he would take over permanently (assuming Chad is healthy enough to play in the third game). Of course, the OL will have to play better to allow Clemens to shine. It will be interesting to see how much the offense playcalling changes. Will the offense "open up" as so many on this forum are sure will happen with Clemens or will the CS take a more conservative view and bring him along slowly. I just hope that they don't treat Clemens the way Bolly was treated in his first game, because that will show us nothing about Clemens and be a recipe for offensive disaster.
No. Clemens isn't good enough. If he was he would already have the job. Mark my words, when Penny is gone, the Jets will be in search of a new QB.
They'll switch back because Pennington is the starter - he's only out due to injury - if Clemen's plays well against the Ravens and gets a win or keeps the game close, and Penny comes back in Week 3 and plays like garbage, I can see the coaching staff pulling Pennington and putting Clemens back out there. Well just have to wait and see. I hope Clemens is the real deal.
if clemens wins he should play in week 3. penny still wouldnt be 100 percent by that time. and any qb who can lead his team to a victory over the ravens in baltimore should start the next week. im not cheering for penny to fail but if clemens can show hes capable i think its time to move on. how else would have pennington got his career started?
If Clemens plays well for one week, Chad gets his job back. If Chad takes longer to come back and Clemens holds up well in his absence, it gets a bit more complicated. Regardless of the number of games, if Clemens plays well as a starter, Chad's in a Bears uniform to start 08. These are all awfully big hypotheticals, though. Regardless of what we've seen in the preseason, we have NO idea how Clemens will perform. The only snaps he's taken in the regular season have been less than impressive, including last week.
