Picking Santana Moss was not a bad pick, although it was not a particularly good pick either. Trading up to pick Santana Moss was ridiculous. The Steelers got an all-pro NT on the 19 pick that we packaged with two other picks to trade up for a smurf receiver. That's why they've won a super bowl since then and we plateau'd well below that before collapsing again. Fundamentally sound decisions lead to good fundamental football. Rotisserie decisions lead to what we've been through, and the rotisserie management is just continuing to occur draft by draft. Trading picks for players, combining picks to move up, that's Madden football not sound NFL football and it not only won't do anything good for us in the long run it's not remotely guaranteed to do anything really good in the short run.
....this is the ENTIRE point when I started this thread....Jets FO has been doing this for several years now....trading up to get "their guy"....even if that guy turns out to be a home run.....we have been chasing teams like the Pats/Steelers/Colts for years because they STOCKPILE picks and have been more successful in the draft.....
Panic...no. I love the idea of trading up for the guy you want. It shows to me that the FO cares about winning not just keeping their jobs. How? It would be easy to sit back and take the conventional / safe pick. It puts more pressure on the FO to take the risk and move up.
....being "aggressive" doesn't exctly equate to "caring" or being prudent.....this is NOT a BB team where you need a few quality players....a team needs a LOT of talent.....so what if the Giants picked him....go to your board and pick the BPA!!!!!!!
Your first "point" doesn't make any sense, please explain. What I could decipher from the rest of your post is that you think the team is more than a few players away and the Jets should have drafted the BPA in the 2nd round and saved the 4th round pick...is that right? If that is your point, I disagree, as I would rather the Jets ensure they get the first round talent they want, than grab their second or third choice and a special teams player in the 4th round. As for the Pats how is taking Mayo at 10 or Mankins in the first round BPA?
BPA went out with bell bottoms. First round picks cost way too much money these days and the only teams who can afford to go that route are teams that are trying to replace all 53 people on their rosters. Other teams will select the BPA that also fits their needs.
...I never believe a team has "enough talent"....even if we are a few players away from the Pats or other elite teams.....My point is 3rd & 4th round picks are NOT throw-away picks....the BEST teams utilize the draft to STOCKPILE talent.....
Every team wants a talented roster 1 - 53, but as a 4-12 team it is clear that the Jets don't just need depth. So, they signed 3 starters in FA, traded for another and then drafted two (hopefully) yesterday. If Keller is gone by the #38 pick, the the Jets weren't getting a starter unless they went CB.
The FO is stock piling picks for next year, Vilma will most likely get a 2nd round, Robertson could get a 4th maybe. The fact is, you don't usually find everydown playmarkers on offense late in the draft. (I'm not saying it doesn't happen because that would be foolish, but you're far more likely to find a playermaker higher up)
I think in this case the trading around to "get your guy" is a little less painful because of how many guys we got out of free agency/trades already.
