Excellent research and stats, my good man! IMO, Vick was underrated as a passer. Many people tend to forget that the falcons o-line was not very good at the time. The o-line coach (who's name slips my mind right now) used scrubs in a chop block/cut back scheme and they were not very good at pass blocking. Vick often had to run for his life just for survival.
Roddy White blossomed in his 3rd year like alot of WRs do. he only started 5 games in year 2- did you expect him to put up 1,000 yd seasons not even starting? He led a team to the NFC Title Game in his 3rd year as a starter and did so w/ a 14th ranked D. He did it a different way than most QBs do it, he wasn't a great passer but he made plays. The man was basically a full time starter for 4 seasons and in those 4 seasons he led his team to the postseason twice and won a playoff game in each postseason including guiding his team to the NFC Title Game and leading his team to the first ever road playoff win at Lambeau Field. In Atlantan's history they had a total of 6 playoff spots pre-vivk and had won playoff games in 3 of those 6 years.
The Falcons' passing game as a whole got better with Ryan starting as opposed to Vick. And while it is true his defense was not amazing during their NFC Championship game year, they had an amazing rushing attack (DVD-Dunn Vick Duckett) that Vick had help him out a lot. Even with LBs spying and defenses crowding the LOS he never could emerge as a passer. They had him running the option in '06 because he was that retarded (as in set back development, not cognitively impaired) as a passer. Everyone likes to talk about how Vick "made plays" but the fact of the matter is that a QB that makes plays primarily through his legs is not a very good QB. Apply that to any other position and the logic fails; if I'm a running back that is going to "revolutionize the position" because I have a strong throwing arm it will not matter if I am an average runner at best. Now look at Vick; a QB that is supposed to {insert quote from above here} with his legs while being (and remaining, because he never really improved) an average passer is not going to work. Is he exciting? Yes. Is he athletic as all get out? Yes. Is he a good QUARTERBACK? No.
That same oline paved the way for a great rushing attack. That line was built to run block and not pass protect because Vick always bailed out of the pocket anyway; the Falcons brought in fast OL to try and keep up with him on rollouts and pave the way on rushing plays. The downside is that they were not great as pass-blocking.
You have no idea what you are talking about. No team can win in the NFL if the QB can't get protection
How does that respond to what I said? Atlanta brought in a speedy OL to zone block, which worked well for them, and because they employed things like moving pockets (yet another college trick to help out Vick). At NO POINT did I say this was a good pass-blocking OL. But you can't just blast the entire unit as bad, they had a good rushing attack. Apparently you have no idea what I'm talking either.
They did not bring in that scheme to help Vick. The scheme changed because the coaching staff and the offensive philosophy changed. In 2002 he had his best stats, and that was his first year as a starter. He threw close to 3,000 yards. That was under the Dan Reeves regime, and even though that offensive line wasn't great, it protected better because it was a different system, a lot of two TE sets.
I'm sure any Falcon fan, player or anyone associated w/ the organization would rather win playoff games than lose them, right? I'm sure the Falcons passing game is better w/ Ryan as Ryan is a better passer but the QBs job is to win and in 2 trips to postseason Vick had 2 playoff wins. You do know Atlanta had a great ground game last year too, right?
So they brought in a new coaching staff that they thought would hurt Vick? I thought that you a get a new coach in order to bring in better ideas and schemes that will better suit your players. Apparently I had the wrong impression.
Brett, see you next preseason where you establish a press conference for any teams seeking a formerly retired, soon to be HoF QB... enjoy your offseason!
Vikings QB strains MCL This is from today's (Sunday's) Newark Star Ledger: Minnesota QB Tarvaris Jackson sprained the MCL in his left knee after getting tangled with a defensive lineman in practice. Here we go again.
Found a link covering the story. Tried to edit my original post but it wouldn't take. http://www.nfl.com/trainingcamp/sto...late=without-video-with-comments&confirm=true Vikings QB Jackson will miss time with MCL sprain NFL.com Wire Reports Minnesota Vikings quarterback Tarvaris Jackson sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee after getting tangled with a defensive lineman in practice on Saturday. NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reports that Jackson's MRI revealed a mild, Grade 1 MCL sprain, according to a league source. The Vikings quarterback is expected to return to practice some time next week. Jackson was hurt when defensive lineman LeTroy Guion fell at his feet and rolled over his leg during an 11-on-11 drill. Jackson folded to the field in pain as trainers rushed to check on him. After a few minutes, he was able to get up and walk off under his own power. "I really don't know what happened," Guion said. "Everybody was moving so fast." The fourth-year pro first received some attention at a tent on the side of the field before heading to the team's locker room area at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Jackson is in a battle with Sage Rosenfels for the starting quarterback position after Brett Favre decided not to come out of retirement and join the Vikings. "Whether it's Tarvaris or any of your guys, you don't want to see any of your guys go down, no matter who it is," offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell said after practice. "Whether it's your quarterback, your third tight end, it doesn't matter. You don't like to see anybody have any type of injury." The Vikings have held three practices since training camp began on Friday, and Jackson and Rosenfels have been splitting the snaps with the first team. "It's pretty tough (to see that), especially in practice," left tackle Bryant McKinnie said. "Hopefully he'll be all right." In his first season on the job in 2006, Vikings coach Brad Childress drafted Jackson in the second round as his quarterback of the future. He has been up and down in his first three seasons in the league, which led to the recruitment of Favre all summer long. When Favre called Childress on Tuesday to tell him he wasn't coming, the competition started anew for Jackson and Rosenfels. Jackson's familiarity with the offense appears to have given him a slight edge so far, but it's still very early in the competition. "At this time, Tarvaris has a little bit more knowledge of our system," Bevell said. "He is an athletic quarterback. He's got a very strong arm and those would be the positives about him." Information from the Associated Press was included in this report.
Yes, but even if not, this development is meaningless. He's not going to come back because a quarterback got injured.
check the dates my man this was from a while ago the question is why did Hobbes drag it back out of the woodwork?
