I can tell you never played football. When the play is fast and Edwards has to make a circus catch or a one handed grab, he has no time to think and his football instincts take over and make the play. Now when he has the defender beaten by 3 steps, he has time to think about the catch. You ever see a WR drop a TD pass and then the commentator said "He was thinking touchdown before he even caught the ball." This is what they are referring to. Look at Chuck Knoblauch, a former gold glove 2nd basemen. He could make all the great plays, but when he had a routine play to first base, he would throw the ball into the stands.
He mentioned the lack of throws coming his way with the Jets, which leads to ?over thinking? when a ball is thrown his way. ?We run the ball so much, I?ve had two pass attempts last week, and when you get one, you?re thinking, ?Okay, here it is, I?ve got to make the play,? instead of just having fun,? Edwards said. Now I've heard everything. What's next? Is Sanchez gonna say he has so many interceptions because he doesn't throw the ball enough times in a game? And what's with this "having fun" shit? Have fun between Feb. 8th and mini-camp.
Rex wants his players to have fun, winning is fun right? I like Edwards and we all know he has all of the talent to be a top 5 WR in the NFL, and he'll get over this. I like how he said he wants to be a Jet for the rest of his career.
I have a theory... If Braylon Edward's drops were all bouncing off the tips of his fingers, I might be completely sold on the concentration theory. But the fact Braylon doesn't seem to be in the right position for some of these balls, I think it might be vision-related. That long ball in Toronto? Hit him in the helmet. He said "I lost it in the lights," which is a lame excuse, but not necessarily an untrue one. That long ball against Cincinnati in week 17? Yeah, that went off his hands, but his failure in that play was an early jump. He couldn't identify where the ball was in its arc. Long ball the next week? He barely got a finger on it, despite plenty of time and room to adjust. Just couldn't find the ball. I think Braylon does a little bit better with passes at "crowd level" as opposed to passes at "dome/sky level" because his vision sucks. The man is a focused player- you don't just absent-mindedly run excellent routes or casually, half-heartedly block some corner into submission. But you don't need great sight to do those things; you do to catch a ball that you're only looking at peripherally over your shoulder. So yeah. I'm sticking with my "Braylon-is-Rick-Vaughn-and-he's-too-cool-to-wear-the-fucking-glasses" theory. Get this man some Gucci Eric Dickerson's and let's go win a fucking championship.
Too bad there are plenty of fans that would rather see us rent a #1 WR for 2/3 of a season for 2 mid-round picks and 2 good role players, followed by us wasting a high draft pick on a WR while neglecting line depth.
