The Jets aren't just trying to make a run, they're trying to build something long term. They stand to save almost 8 million dollars by cutting guys who are largely replacement level. I don't understand cutting Faneca, but then again, if he should decline any further, benching him might not go over well in the locker room. The Jets have a lot of cap space next year, so maybe they're looking to be proactive and lock someone up get someone locked up long term. -X-
I can buy Faneca b/c his play has been severely depleted and he's close to being a flat out liability in pass protection. The FO has liked Robert Turner for a long time, many believe Hunter could be a very good guard and of course Slauson(one of Callahan's guys) is entering year 2. There is an argument to be made for removing Faneca's hefty price tag and the aforementioned issues in pass protection. They just better be completely sure about the potential replacement b/c Jet fans aren't gonna be as understanding to the FO if there's another Kendall/Adrien clarke situation on the O-line. Cactus has been a solid but unspectacular player for a long time. I can't understand why his job would be in any danger but you have to wonder if Rex wants to get more of a pass rush from the starting weak side spot. Also, Cactus hasn't always been the most motivated guys...he may quietly be another Kerry Rhodes hold over who Rex views as a road block. Remember...Rex was really high on Westerman last year. Westerman looked good in limited action and maybe just needed some time on the practie field. Ellis being released to me is a real head scratcher. I view him as the most important leader on the team and the ultimate Jet. He's getting up there in age but he's still very productive as a lunch pail type. He's also always been clutch. It's obvious the team wants to get younger on the DL, and there have been rumblings about the priority in round 1 being DE. Also another jets site is reporting rumors of Gholston being moved to DE. But I think Ellis being released would be a mistake. He's too much of a leader on and off the field..and he's still productive!
Wasn't there talk about guaranteed mony being not guaranteed in this no cap year? I'm not sure but someone brought this up...
I think it'd be a little ridiculous to cut these guys. If we draft a left guard, then Faneca's days will be numbered. I think he's been great for the run offense, but he's become a horrible pass protector.
This just seems totally odd. Just when it looks like we only need a few pieces, this 'leaked news' comes out. I don't believe this for a second, but then everyone has their price. More smoke from Tanny 2 days before the draft.......hes up to something.
I think what Lombardi meant is that the Jets will be looking to trade away Sanchez, Santonio and Antonio Cro. They have realized these were terrible picks and need to clear some roster space while Tanny strikes a mega deal which includes Peyton Manning, Chargers offense and Tom Brady to be rested against the Jets in the playoffs.
Yeah, that's about all I can make from it. It would be funny for Tanny to be using Fred Flintstone Lombardi to create smokescreens for the draft. After this report, it almost seems certain that we're drafting a corner with our first pick.
They could be doing this to give Mangold, Revis, Harris some fat boy contracts. if anything put fucking gholston on the trade block aka cut his ass.
If we pick up Mike Iupati or Maurkice Pouncey, I could see Faneca getting cut or traded. If we pick up Jason Taylor or draft Kindle, Graham, etc., then ditching Bryan Thomas would make a lot of sense. If we draft Ndamukong Suh, getting rid of Shaun Ellis still makes zero sense.
I can't imagine this is our plan. There is no way you move Faneca with nothing in substantial in the works. Not when we are on the precipice of something huge. I can see Thomas going due to draft opportunities, but Ellis is another cornerstone who should not be moved this season...
This is the first time I've read Ellis's name. Faneca and Thomas at least make a little sense and could be replaced during the draft (Iupati/any pass rushing OLB or Jason Taylor). Ellis makes no sense other than he's an incumbent from old regimes...

If they were just going to waive those 3 players to cut the fat, Gholston would be ancient history already, like, before the end of the league year. This report screams bullshit.
