oh really?? to let the Phillies who have horrible pitching climb back like that is an embarassment itself. It's like if the Orioles cameback to win the AL East division or WC.
do you honestly have nothing better to do on a sunday afternoon than to be on an internet message board talking trash to people you dont even know? how fuckin old are you, 12?
Everyone leave JetsFanEd alone. Trolling a message board he hasn't been in ages when a team he doesn't really care about loses is all he has in life.
I disagree. the Yanks choke only came in a shorter time frame, but at least against a team that was arguably better than they were that went on to win the WS. the Mets collapsed against teams that they were supposed to be better than, who other than the Phils, are going nowhere. you get beat by a better team, the only thing you can do is shake your head. that was only a choke because of the situation. but get beat repeatedly by teams you should be better than, that reflects internal ineptitude and inability to perform in the clutch -- the very definition of choking IMO. that, and the fact that the Mets had to lose far more games than the Yankees did to blow the season. sure, the Yankees lost 4 in a row, but given 17 games, they probably would have righted the ship. the Mets lost far more games to blow the season, that makes it a bigger choke. sure, each team may have only needed 1 more win, but the Mets were given far more games to win that 1 game and couldn't do it.
This was probably the greatest regular season collapse that I can remember, and the Yankees collapse was the greatest in the postseason. I don't think you can really compare the two though, because while the Mets had more chances to win, the Yankees just needed to win 25% of their next 4 games, and they couldn't even do that.
This would place as the second worst regular season choke in history according to Baseball Prospectus. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=6764
Where I disagree with this that if you look at the Mets home record over season it's 41-41. Clearly not that of a superior team. The Phillies deserved to make the playoffs and hopefully they'll make some noise because their fans have had to suffer moreso than us. I don't think as a whole the Mets were that good. Maybe they were but the inability of Willie and stupidity of Minaya in the last offseason handicapped the team in such a way that you'll never know how good this team really could have been.
