No, I don't want them to be the Redskins. But I also want us to fill at least one hole with a solid free agent talent versus the Kimo "nice guy but a no show on the field" approach. For all the teams that had significant cap space heading into free agency, the Jets to my knowledge are the only team to have ADDED to their cap space (by cutting Ramsey on day one of free agency) versus using it to fill holes. One signing is all I ask, but most of the good guys are gone now, so it looks like its tier two guys or bust

People are orgetting Dyson, the best FA we got last year. We got lucky with Clement, a guy who had washed out of SF and AZ, but he was a marginal player.

On the other hand, signing guys like Kimo and Hamilton is a waste of money. Dregs like Kassel and Chatham are too. Take all of that money and put it into a guy that can start and have an impact instead of this sort of marginal "depth" player(s). What is the fall off from a Kassel to a rookie or second year player that will be dirt cheap?

NE once again is showing people how to handle the new and ever expanding cap this year. While they were always conservative in the past, they now see that the landscape has changed. Also note that their signings are for player who haven't hit 30 yet. If people think FA's are expensive this year, jusyt wait until next year when the cap goes up again.

why do the people who like to callother people "chicken littles" never actually listen to the posters who want to sign a couple guys? the response is always that we dont want to be ther edskins....I dont think anyone hear is calling for a redskin like spending spree....just one or two guys that are soewhere around top tier guys who can improve this team right now.....the fact is, since we overachieved this year and will be picking 25 we're kinda screwed a bit here.....We cant just rely on the draft, we need to add a couple solid players.....I htink we should have done that with one of the big guards or tackles that were out there....but its too late for that

Ok I will give you a serious response that I hope you can readthrough your teary eyes,

Here is the list of FA's that were available. Find me one on that list that would instantly make this team a championship contender, just one. Besides the top two names which guy would you blow half your cap space on? Which person on the list is anything more than a solid starter at best (top 5 or 10 on list) or a mediocre player to scrub?

    http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/fa

Which one on that list would fill the Jets greatest need on the defensive line?

Before you cry a river maybe you should realize who and what your are crying over, which is essentially nothing noteworthy!

paying a solid player great player money sure sounds like the Redskins for me. the Jets aren't signing these players because they are getting overpaid by other teams. if the Jets know this going into the process, they probably feel wasting time on visiting a player who is going to sign elsewhere for more money than they are worth can be skipped and that time can be better spent focusing on players that they feel they can sign at the price they feel the players are worth.

Dude, nobody's crying, we're just looking to fill holes. The way you word the above is ridiculous. Of course one player doesn't solidify a championship. But if we could have signed the tackle that the Bills signed, OR A Thomas, OR, the fullback that went to the Falcons, OR one of the premier guards, than we would have had one more piece of the puzzle. We just spent a lot of cap space to sign Cotch to a long term deal. I love Cotch but at the end of the day cap space is cap space, so why does it make sense to drop a six million signing bonus on cotch and 5 million a year, but it makes no sense to do that on another established player that has proven himself in this league but happens to have worn another teams uniform? There are a lot of ways to build the championship contenting team. To think the only way to do this is through the draft is in my opinion limiting your options.

why are we screwed drafting at 25? great players get drafted at 25 and lower every year. just because you don't get the sexy top pick doesn't mean you can't get a great player.

this is a perfect example of the flawed mentality of the fans crying for top free agent signings who are the equivalent of sexy top picks. neither guarantee success nor prohibit success with players who aren't as highly regarded.

I would like to see a list of top free agents from the last five years that Jets fans cried about not signing and the impact they had on the teams they signed with -- I am confident they didn't equate to tremendous improvements which the fans of those teams all believed was coming.

nobody is saying it is the only way -- but it is the way the Jets are pursuing it. sure it limits options, but has been crafted after careful thought by intelligent people. sorry it doesn't make you happy.

I am sure there are people that work for you that don't agree with some of your decisions but you have worked hard to get to where you are and have earned the right to make the decisions you believe are best for your organization. sure, there are other ways to do your job, but they hired you and you will make the decisions that you feel are best, regardless of the fact that there are other options, which you have probbaly weighed and yet feel your course is best for what you want to accomplish.

Ok I will drop the crying stuff................. Premier guards? You should reword that to premier guard and that is debatable. Dielman was not really available, he phoned his agent almost immediately to get a deal done with the Chargers. He never would have came to the Jets.

Steinbach is a very good player but certainly not a premier guard. He is a versatile player a younger version of Kendall. Is it really worth giving up half our cap space for that type of player. Especially considering that Steinbach is not the road grader so desperately needed by us? Seriously, that contract he got was ridiculous.

I can not understand for the life of me why any Jet fan is worried about the Bills signings yesterday. They signed two mediocre starters and a back up yesterday for a ton of dough. They ended up with a ton more cap space then the Jets so I guess they figured lets use it. The Bills lost a hell of a lot more talent and game breaking players then they gained yesterday. I think their moves were nothing special at all.

We need desperate help in the trenches adn the only way that is going to change is developing our own through the draft and college free agency which is a hell of a lot different than what we are arguing about.

The Cotchery signing and the Thomas signing show how smart Tannenbaum is. If you look at B. Thomas's numbers versus A. Thomas numbers how far off are they? Not really that drastic. Now I understand AT is a better player at this point but signing Brian T to that contract was a very shrewd and frugal thing looking at just the numbers compared to A Thomas.

Cotchery is a young player that would go through a wall to make a catch. He seems to make plays at the right times. He made some huge catches this year. He is young and seemed to improve as the year went on as did many of the players. It makes a ton of sense to sign him now to less of a contract then let him get to free agency next year. I know you understand that.............

Where are you going to find comparable value for the money on the list I linked previously? You will not. If Tannenbaum had to sign a player like Cotchery in free agency this year it would have taken a hell of a lot more than 7 million of up front signing bonus. A young player that is possibly on the verge of stardom or the very least has pro bowl potential in the future would cost a fortune if they were out there, which they are not.

Good points, Miamipuck. But keep in mind, Cotch has one year of performance under his belt. Defenses will be more prepared for him next years. Nothing says that the contract we signed him to is more of a sure thing than a guy like Steinbach who's been a premier guard in this league for about 6 or 7 seasons. I just would like to see more balance between free agency and draft emphasis
