I agree about the #2 wideout position. As it is Kerley is a relatively raw talent, and Turner, too. My feeling good about those two at 3 and 4 depends to a great extent on having a solid #2 to take pressure off Holmes. And let's not forget the wideouts will be even more important this year, unless Cumberland comes back strong, since LT will be gone out of hte backfield most likely and with no obvious good pass catching RB to replace him. Meanwhile Keller seems to have reached his peak, so flexibility and talent at wideout is more important than otherwise because of the lack of talent at other receiver positions.

The simple fact is depending on a rookie at that position this coming year simply does not add up.

Elsewhere, I feel like a rookie tackle is risky as well (although perhaps not as much as at wideout), because that pretty much means we will see a lot of Hunter. But... I wouldn't be surprised if that's what happens. Putting Hunter aside and looking at the OL as a whole, it is time to make an investment on the OL. If the short term cost is Hunter plays while the rookie learns, that is obviously not optimal, but I won't be surprised.

The more I think about it, if a suitable player is available, OLB seems the best place to use a high draft pick, since Westerman and Maybin will be around, and Pace will definitely be back, while the year after next his contract may dictate a change that year. Plus the Jets really need speed and youth at LB.

Safety I supposed depends to some extent on Leonhard's health and whether he comes back. If not, the Jets will be very thin at safety waiting for a rookie to learn the defense. But on balance, since imo the Jets need TWO safeties, maybe a high pick goes here whether Leonhard is back or not.

Courtney Upshaw. Go after Gholdson or Landry in FA.

No, but I don't think it will come to that. More and more rookie WRs are able to contribute as more and more colleges go to a more pro style passing offense. I think Kerley will contribute a whole lot more this year than you seem to think he will. Also, if worse comes to worse, Cumberland played WR in college. For that matter, Keller could play WR. If the Jets add a bigger TE who can both block and catch, he could start and Keller could be the #2 WR or the slot WR and let Kerley be the #2 guy. Hopefully it won't come to that.

The bottom line is cap space. The Jets aren't gonna have much to spend. Most of the WRs are gonna want too much money, money that the Jets don't have to spend. They're only gonna keep so many WRs. When a draft is deep and strong at a position, you need to draft from that position at least once, if not twice. Anything else is foolish, unless you have no need at that position at all.

Finally, I don't see the Jets as going back to the AFC CG in 2012 regardless of who they sign or draft. I think they're at least a year, if not two from really being ready to challenge for the SB again. That would give the rookie WR(s) time to develop, and time to replace Holmes (hopefully).

Every WR taken in the first 2 rounds last season with the exception of Jonathan Baldwin either started or saw fairly significant action and made good contributions. In addition, Kerley and Denarius Moore made excellent contributions (and both were 5th rounders).
