as far as Ferguson I figure if anything after we release him if we feel the way you do (which is reasonable) and don't think there's any realistic replacement we sign him back for much cheaper. everybody wants him to restructure but no, that's only going to make him more expensive and hard to cut later. he needs to agree to a straight up pay cut or go.. he's not productive anymore he gets abused and he even gets penalties now because of the fact that he can't do anything against good DE's and OLBs at this point. I loved him his whole career but it's facts he sucks now I don't even want him back. We can draft o-line heavy this year.. it's a must. If.. IF we entertain this Sheldon for Thomas trade he will not be as expensive as Ferguson. Ferguson is the TOP PAID LT. Yuck. Joe Thomas was already paid his big money.. he is owed 9M next season and 10M for the last 2 on his contact. We'd save 5M by acquiring him! He's not a free agent he's but he's asking Cleveland to trade him (you can google that). Can sign Winters replacement in free agency with ease.. he's at the bottom of the barrel.. anything will be better. Draft that RT within the first 2 rounds.
lol Sheldon is a top 5 maybe even top 3 DE (3-4).. that can play anywhere on the line and now even shown he can drop back at OLB for ya. He's an all-pro snub. he'll easily get it multiple times in his career. we're talking about an animal that hasn't even reached his prime yet vs a 31 year old with a solid 3 years left. Cleveland would hate you if you were the GM and said no to this trade. We're just stacked as hell at that position and kind of in win now mode so it all makes sense. but that 32nd pick is ours too even if we have to throw in a pick ourselves
The problem with cutting him is that he becomes a FA, then anyone could sign him, and we could get in a bidding war just to get him back if we couldn't secure Thomas or an adequate replacement. I agree that we try to get him to take a straight pay cut. He holds the cards, however. He knows that we have no one in house to replace him. He knows that we don't have much cap space. He knows (or his agents will tell him) that this isn't a very good draft for OTs and the chances are the Jets could find no one that would be ready and able to start this season. In that situation, Mac is faced with a difficult choice...risk losing him totally and having no good option (or even a bad option) at LT, or sucking it up and paying him. Hopefully, Brick will realize that he's not the player he was and is being overpaid, and the team needs the cap space. With the team winning and getting close to being a contender, hopefully that will be enough to make him want to finish his career as a Jet and help the team out. I totally agree with you about restructuring and kicking his cap hit down the road. As for Thomas, I know he wants out of Cleveland, but do you really think they're gonna just give him away? They're gonna want to hold other teams up for stiff price. More than likely, they're going to have a rookie QB starting for them. Think they want to risk his health to a question mark at LT? Again, there are only two top shelf LTs in this draft and they're likely to go in the top 10. If Cleveland takes a QB as expected at #2, there will be no way they can also get one of those two LTs. I doubt that their backups is a starting quality LT. I think we can forget about seeing Thomas in a Jets uniform. The only way I could see that happening is if the CS decides to stick with Manziel as the starter, trades Thomas and then takes one of those LTs. As you said, Winters is much easier to replace, and I do expect that either a FA will be brought in or an OG drafted to try to take the RG spot. I think you can forget seeing that RT taken in the first 2 rounds. Again, there are no real stud RT prospects in this draft, only a couple of pretty good prospects. Either Mac will sign a FA or we're stuck with Giacomini for another season.
I disagree and we'll just have to agree to disagree. Sheldon has the potential to be a top five or top three 3-4 DE, and he's very good, but he had a down year and with the character concerns, his value has probably taken a sizeable hit, if not plummeted. It won't matter how talented he is if he's dead or becomes a paraplegic because he wrecks going over 100 mph. It won't matter how good he is, if he stays in trouble with the law and NFL and is suspended frequently. After what they've been through in Cleveland with Gordon, I'd be shocked if they took on another player for a while with character concerns. Now maybe we could trade Sheldon for Gordon, but I don't see any way that Cleveland gives up all of that for Richardson. I think you're dreaming.
First Bruce Irvin will be 29 next season( that's not young) . Second Bruce Irvin is probably going to the Raiders, Falcons, or Jaguars. Why? They all play similar defense as Seattle, and they all have coaches that had some kind of relationship with the player. Third B Irvin best position is strong side Lb in a 4-3 defense.
His value has not plummeted or taken a huge hit from one incident. NFL GM's are not as dramatic as you.
i dont see much to spend after we address our own free agents. i think if we add outside talent is via trade moreso then free agency
Some of our free agents (Chris Ivory especially) will be overpaid. Unless we are getting the hometown discount (when does that ever happen for us) we need to upgrade these guys if we can.
Upgrade with less money?? We all gotta get it thru our heads we are more than likely going to be worse off at some positions. At least on paper. Maybe someone breaks thru and surprises us
Not only will this off season be a test of Mac's acumen as a GM, it will reveal what kind of job Bowles and his CS did to develop PS players during the season, and to continue that growth with them and Amaro, Enunwa, Smith (when he's healthy), Mauldin, Miles, Bailey and others.
Hes most likely staying in Denver....... They can franchise him which I'm sure they will if they need to
I agree with all those cuts except they won't happen. Macc has said that he really likes the Oline and wants to bring back every single one. I personally think that the O line stinks and Fitz put in a lot of effort to avoid pressure and sacks and make them look competent.
Hopefully, he's just blowing smoke so as not to tip his hand for the draft. If he really thinks that the OL is good and fine just as it is, he isn't nearly as smart as I think he is.
Yeah, I dont believe Mac for a second on that note lol. Like you said Fitz kept his sack numbers down, on his own. Ivory also was a playmaker and for the most part made a big chunk of his big plays after contact, which again shames the o-line. They were ranked 26th (by PFF...take it how you want lol)
In my little mock off-season thing.. maybe i'll make a thread for it.. i had David Harris and Marshall restructuring a tad bit.. I know marshall just got that new contract last year but he's all in as a recruit and i think his will to win is stronger than his money hunger at this point. David Harris is just one of those guys, like Mangold who i also have restructuring. They are all about the team. I think Mac gets creative with making cap room this summer.
I think what he means is that other GMs will leverage the suspensions in getting a better trade value for him. They will obviously do their own due diligence and then come back to the Jets and act like the suspensions are a big deal so they could drive the price down. Any good negotiator would do that.
