Eh I think people are reaching about passion of football thing, probably one of our greatest players in Curtis Martin didn't have that unquestionable love for football and he is going to be an HOFer. Gholston is a beast plain and simple.

Football kept Curtis out of a life of crime and thuggery... i think he loves football for that.

There is a big difference between being a rookie, being serviceable, and watching Gholston cover people. I'm not saying he's a bad player, but he's going to take years to get good in coverage. However, I'm pointing out that our defense is too weak to support a one dimensional player. We couldn't support Jonathon Vilma for god's sake! I kind of like Gholston, but I feel that the pick is extremely risky. But the again, I suppose anyone this high is a risk.

I'd still like to trade down if possible. Consequently, with all these guys having amazing combines, it puts us in a good trading position.

BTW- I could careless what he likes off the field, that's all fluff to make the papers.

Long's never dropped back in coverage. Groves probably can do it, but when he was asked to he wasn't very good (injuries). Avril might.

The fact is, when you're looking at prospects you're looking at what they *can* do.

Plus, like many of Gholston's issues...his coverage skills are exaggerated. They aren't terrible and he's actually looked better doing it than your average elite pass rushing prospect.

You're not going to find many elite pass rushers who can drop back in coverage. Thats a very coachable issue, and Gholston doesn't sound like an idiot or uncoachable.

Atleast he has one thing he's very good at, that our team in general is bad at. Hobson and Thomas looked like zero-dimensional players last year.

He wasn't the type of person that like football outside of playing in it, which to me is similar to what people here are saying about Gholston.

Bryan Thomas was touted as a one-dimensional pass rusher, but since he's been here, he's been a superior run stopper to pass rusher. His pass rushing has been OK to awful, while his run stopping has been OK to very good. As long as Gholston provides penetration and domination at the line of scrimmage, I could care less what his coverage skills are like.

If they put Thomas back on the other side where he got 8.5 sacks, then him and gholston will be a tandem that teams will have to prepare for.

    Jake Long put up 37

    37 at 266 pounds >>>>> 37 at ~315 pounds

I don't think Long has benched yet.

I have to say, you can't not be impressed by Gholston.

At this rate, he may not last to us.

Quentin Groves is the 2nd guy I would pick if Gholston is gone.

I think it's just that heart and dedication are so much more important in football than say, baseball and basketball where talent translates much more directly to success.

However, Ia gree with your earlier point on Groves. He seems a much more natural and fluid than Gholston and that, along with many other reasons, has me prefer him to Gholston by a good margin.

he had such a good combine that i'm actually really afraid that he might not be there at #6. I want the jets to draft him so badly. I think he can be a total stud showing off his absolutely freakish athletic ability.

I feel scouts knew this was coming, so it doesn't really move him up.. Same with Chris Long- No one is surprised by what they are doing, this is what is expected of them.

I certainly would not be upset if we drafted Gholston. The guy is truly a specimen. He looks like he could deliver a lot of punishment.

I think our pick at six will be Long, Ellis, McFadden or Gholston. One of those four guys depending on how things break and who is available at the time.

Gholston, as several have noted, is a real beast. What a great draft at no.6 I also like this Marcus Howard dude from UGA -- he was the consensus chainsaw massacre in the GA bowl game this year I heard on NFL.com.

I saw Howard run that 4.47 forty and he is bigger across the chest than Gholston -- can't find anything about his bench press reps though. Gholston's 34 were the real thing, I saw them.

Man, would I like to see the results of some angry strong men on the NYJ defense. It's about time. Its been a long time since Bryan Cox and that big cat LB from Fla. State were happily stomping people out alongside their brother, Mo Lewis, for the NYJs...!

I love the way people can quibble over one draft spot when the whole thing is a crap shoot. He's good enough to go No.6 but not No.5.

    Okay...

Did Gholston really tear it up or did he just bench well a run a good 40?

The rumor mill says that the Bengals are hot on Gholston and are considering trading up:

"Bengals will have to move up for OSU's Gholston
February 26 Dayton Daily News"There are at least two teams picking in the Top 5 that could be potential trade partners for the Bengals. That would be the Atlanta Falcons with the No. 3 pick and Kansas City Chiefs with the No. 5 pick. The Bengals organization may have a better chance of convincing the Chiefs' Powers That Be to swap places due to the close relationship that Marvin Lewis and Herm Edwards share."

More from the rumor mill - off topic:

    "Kearse gone soon, not yet
February 25 Philadelphia Daily News (scroll down)"That Jevon Kearse Eagles jersey in your closet isn't a memento just yet, but it will be soon. An NFL Network report Friday night saying the Birds were going to release Kearse led to a spasm of speculation that this was happening right then. "
