FA isn't just about signing "superstars." It's about improving competition and depth on your team and there were good players to be had last year. Idzik was known to be deliberate or slow in his decision making process. Even his biggest supporters acknowledged that. You know as well as I that in the NFL things move swiftly. You can't sit around thinking about things for too long. You have to sometimes make a quick decision and move. You may be partially right about his saving money for this year, but I think our having all the extra money/cap space was more due to Idzik's being too deliberate and perhaps being afraid to make a mistake. He just didn't seem to project any confidence or knowledge of what he was doing in terms of building the team. He didn't seem to have any play except to build through the draft. He talked about competition but then didn't seize opportunities to increase or improve competition on the team, and if what some have said is true, then he squelched any real competition at QB between Vick and Geno. I don't think Idzik deserves anything positive said about him except taking Richardson in the draft. Totally missing out on all the great WR prospects last year in the draft was reason enough for him to be fired, not to mention "passing" on both Bridgewater and Carr.
Yeah, and it was dreadful. I have no idea what you're trying to say. That CB class was ugly. Everyone here wanted to pay DRC or Vontae Davis top dollar. I found it comical.
You're flat out wrong. There were still very good WRs still to be had in the draft. Beckham wasn't the only great WR prospect. A rookie WR doesn't have to light up the NFL in his rookie season, just show that he is learning the system, contributing and progressing. How many passes was Cooks gonna get in NO with Graham and all their other receivers?
They also can't be praised yet like so many people are doing. We're so quick to say you can't grade a draft until 3 years in, but we're quick to anoint players who show much of anything when they're on another team. It's a double standard. I wanted Cooks. I thought Pryor was a flat out dumb pick, taking a hard hitting safety in a league where hard hits are now frowned upon. I'm very quick to point out that I did not like his drafts, never did. But it just doesn't change the fact that I thought he was maligned for faulty reasoning.
This myth again? No he did not finish on a high note--he just wasn't as awful as he was earlier n the year. Just like this year. _
So wrong. It was the year of the WR and he whiffed. I can't forgive not getting the QB but for godsakes if he wasn't going to get a QB he HAD to get a WR. _
Where was the franchise QB? I hope you're not talking about Carr or Bridgewater. Both looked OK as rookies but they're far from being any kind of franchise QB's. Maybe they develop into that, maybe not, way too soon to tell. If these guys are your idea of franchise QB's, you need to watch more football. You can bash Idzik for a lot of things but not for that.
Idzik deserves alot of credit for were we are now.... if he went out and overpaid for 2nd and 3rd tier talent then Revis woudlnt be here now, marshall wouldnt be here now, and we would have the 14th pick instead of the 6th pick. Only giant homers who thought we stood some kind of chance of winning last season are upset.... the right move was what happened: -preserve cap space for this offseason, when the talent is better -throw away last season and get the highest draft pick possible to get a shot at a QB or elite player If you want to knock idzik for poor draft choices thats 100% valid. but he took a complete mess of a cap, turned it into insane cap space, and left us with 50M in cap room and the #6 overall pick to work with.
this is where I am at.... franchise qbs arent something you go pick up at CVS or 7-eleven. you need a top 3-5 pick and/or enormous luck to get them. when was that the case? you are better off taking a flyer on a later round guy then overpaying in picks or money to a guy who isnt capable. then bide your time until you have a shot at a real franchise qb and do whatever it takes to get him.
Bridgewater and Carr 1000% and if you don't think so, YOU didn't watch them play football this year. I watched every one of their games this year and those guys will be well on their way--guys that those franchise will build around for the next decade plus. While we're looking to sign a jag like Fitzpatrick and hopefully draft Mariota. _
What good was WR really going to do? were we gonna win 9 or 10 games if we had taken a wideout instead? we still had vick/geno at QB. and we did go out and sign decker. Dont get me wrong, i really wanted mike evans, but even if we got him, we still go 4-12
Why is everyone so concerned about what we were going to do last year? We were never going to contend, it's about setting the team up for the future. You realize had we drafted one of the solid WRs last year, he'd be on our team for a few years, right? _
and if we draft one this year he will still be on our team for a few years. did it matter if we got him last year or not? we still drafted a position of need. its not like we took a DT
It was the year of the WR--this year's class doesn't compare. I don't care about a safety when one of the biggest holes on our team was WR. Hell, offense in general. Safety? Over a QB or a stud WR? _
Dug up my post from another thread, still think it's spot on... I'm so tired of hearing about the CBs and WRs. I'm glad we didn't overspend on a CB in FA. He tried to address it in the draft with McDougle and come draft time, we did have Milliner still in theory. Sure, both were injured, but the comical thing about it is that everyone saw dreadful play from Milliner until the last 2 weeks of the season when he looked like a superstar. Then everyone started projecting him as a superstar, until he got hurt again, and now he's back to being a bum in everyone's eyes. Why? Because our fan base is just stupid. We anoint someone in 2 seconds and then we tear him down in 2 seconds. So damn fickle. And McDougle we haven't had time to judge, but reports are that he works hard, studies hard, and has talent. Yes, he has an injury history, and so he gets hurt, and fans rip him and Idzik apart. But say he doesn't get hurt...are we saying that he doesn't have the potential to be very good in this league? People are saying that, but the truth is, no one has a damn clue. Could the situation be better? Sure. But the conspiracy theory stuff is just bullshit. And enough with the WRs already. Yup, swing and a miss. We get it. But he got Decker, which some people liked. We got Harvin, which of course got flamed because of the timing. We kept Kerley, which most people liked. But onto the draft, where are these stud WRs? Watkins and Evans look decent (both gone by our pick). OBJ looks like a superstar (gone by our pick). There's not a single WR that was there for our pick that is lighting it up. Some are playing pretty well, but nothing crazy here. But everyone acts like these guys are so fantastic. Cooks - decent before injury with DREW BREES throwing him the ball Benjamin - flashes of stardom, and flashes of being average Lee - yawn, minor flashes of being alright Matthews - decent so far in a high-powered offense Richardson - yawn Devante Adams - average Latimer - yawn Allen Robinson - decent before injury Landry - decent Huff - yawn Moncrief - eh John Brown - he's a slot WR, we have one, but has shown flashes Jalen Saunders - sucked (but was nothing to sneeze at at OK) Ellington - yawn Evans - same deal as Saunders Bryant - put together a couple big plays for the Steelers It gets worse from there. Basically, where the Jets drafted their WRs, they wouldn't have gotten anything better than Saunders, Evans, and Enunwa. It didn't work, but most of the guys drafted after them haven't done shit with better QBs. But we're Jets fans, so we overreact to everything. The grass is always greener. Should we have drafted one of those other guys that people are pretending are lighting up the league? Maybe. But they'd still look like shit on this team, so we would have flamed those picks too. As a fan base, we do nothing but exaggerate EVERYTHING. It's annoying. But I'm sure every fan base does it.
Another great year for wide receivers. Hopefully Mac can address the position. As much as I like Marshall, he's old and this is a perfect time to get a WR in here without any pressure on him.
The Giants have avoided the big splash repeatedly over the years. They've treated the draft like the most important resource they had. They've let declining problematic vets go when the time came, even people like Jeremy Shockey who was regarded as one of the best TE's in the NFL at the time the Giants moved on. Even Tiki Barber who was let go after rushing for 3,500 yards and adding another 1,000 yards in receptions the two years before he was retired. That's why they have two rings in the last decade. It's really not correct to say you have to make a splash in NY even if it hamstrings you down the road. It's easier to make a splash to be sure but then you wind up herded into a corner repeatedly by the media and the fans and you don't get two rings. Instead you get to watch the same old cycle happen over and over again.
Agreed. I wasn't heaping praise - just stating a fact. I should've limited it to the Jets. We are all about the splash and suck at drafting/developing players, with a few exceptions.
Something has to break the cycle. The cycle broke John Idzik and the Jets. It will break our current FO just as surely if they don't figure out a way to break it first. Even going all-in this year won't break the cycle. That's what Tanny did from 2008 to 2010 and the cycle still broke him in the end. It's not a hopeless situation but it is much harder to deal with than it seems on the surface.
I think the key will be how they draft and how many draft picks they make. They should not necessarily pick to fill holes. They should also pick with guys like Brick and Mangold in mind---and yes, even Revis next year or the year after.
