You need to give it up. The Jets defense was ranked #6 in yards allowed. In every other defensive metric, they were in the bottom half of the NFL. So how the hell you get "with everything combined" they were ranked 6th?
No they were not,Its total yards ......They were ranked 5th against the run, ranked 6th in Sacks, passing yards per game 14th,sure we were weak In the secondary which was the main flaw .....but your only telling half the story if your talking about PPG And Points allowed there's a lot of things the defense did well last season
We are ranked 6th in part due to the fact that our offense left the defense in bad positions a lot. Other teams had to travel shorter distances to score.
Who cares about yards? Why haven't you acknowledged that the defense has allowed more points each year since 2009. I'm not saying the Jets won't have a good defense. I think they will have a great one next year. But to actually believe they were the 6th best defense last year is foolish.
Points allowed is an important team stat, but it is not an effective measure of defense. it doesn't pull out points scored against offense or special teams, and it does not account for 3 and outs which led to FG's. if anything, a big gap between effectiveness in yds allowed and pts allowed, is a clear indicator that the other 2 phases are failing. that is exactly what was happening with the Jets, and is the better criticism than some lazy analysis stating 'the league has figured out Rex's D'.. Total yds allowed + Red zone efficiency paints a pretty clear picture. In 2014, we were very effective against the run, which explains the favorable total yds avg. However, we were not good at red zone efficiency, specifically against the pass. The secondary was clearly a problem last year. obviously Mac and Bowles felt the same way regarding the secondary, as it was their #1 priority to address this offseason. with those corrections made, i expect improvements to both total yds and red zone efficiency in 2015.
I don't understand how you can say that? As I pointed out in the original post, the Jets have allowed more points each year since 2009. I know that it doesn't pull out points that were caused by the offense or special teams, but the 2009 team had Sancheze with 20 ints. So in terms of QB play, they were similar. The Jets have continually allowed more points than the previous year. Its not like they have had a down year and bounced back. They went from 236 to 401. Turnovers are down (ranked 32) and passing tds (ranked 30) are up. How can you not see the league has figured him out? However, I think the Jets front 7 is very good and got even better with Williams. The biggest weakness was the secondary and they signed 4 new players, plus Milliner and McDougle are coming back from injury. There is no doubt the Jets will surely improve as they went from possibly the worst secondary to one of the best. The Jets should have a top 5 defense next year.
no coahc in history is going to overcome the worst qb in football consistently. it just isnt feasible. the fact rex was able to do it at all is an amazing feat.
you are taking one stat in a vacuum, a stat which is a total team stat and not defense specific, and trying to assert a pattern suggesting 'teams have figured Rex out'.... it's actually a lazier analysis than those simply saying our D was fine last year, as we ranked 6th.. in both cases, the blinders are up. large variances between yds allowed and pts allowed is absolutely the clearest indicator that there is a large problem (or two) in the other phases of your game. there is no clearer indicator imo.. if you want to find a pattern, check out 3rd down efficiency, red zone efficiency, and passing TD's. you'll see a huge spike in the wrong direction this season. none of those things were issues prior to this year. in fact, we never finished outside the top half of the league in 3rd down efficiency until this year. now look at our roster in the secondary for the season, and see if there was any changes or correlation between personnel and that spike. the only thing the league figured out, was that we couldn't cover anyone in 2014. thankfully, Mac has done what his predecessor would not, and has addressed that problem. we absolutely should be a top 5 D in total yds and red zone efficiency, while being dominant against the run this season. The Bills will be right there too, which also blows up your theory about being 'figured out'.
I'm not sure he was. He mentioned that stat but I think he did with an eye to the stats you mentioned. Plus, I think among the biggest problems with the Jets defense last season was very bad defensive play calling. All too often Rex called defenses as if he had Revis and Cromartie back there. And I DO think the league has, by and large, figured out the overload blitz. It's a tactic that can be used sparingly, but not as your base 3rd down defense. I recall the game against the Broncos. Ryan was flummoxing Manning by NOT calling blitzes. But then Ryan got anxious and went to more blitz coverages and Manning ate his defense up. I know you can't run the same defense every down, but, wow, as soon as he started calling blitzes Manning woke up. Ryan clearly was locked into a strategy that didn't suit the players or, often, the situation on the field. BTW, points given up DOES matter and so does the lack of turnovers, which had been a consistent problem throughout the latter part of Rex's tenure.
First of all you have no idea how the Bills will end up. They haven't even played a down with Rex Ryan. For all we know, he will continue his trend of allowing more points each year as head coach. I certainly agree that the Jets secondary was terrible last year. I agree that part of the decline was the lack of a secondary. Six interceptions and 30 passing TD allowed is terrible. Thankfully, they have done a complete overhaul of the secondary. I think the defense will be great this year, especially with a new coach. But again, the declining defense was not a one time thing last year. If the defense was solid between 2010 and 2013, I'd agree with you that 2014 was a fluke based on the players on the field. However, it has gotten worse each year since 2009, so you can't just blame the 2014 secondary. It has steadily declined and the 2014 version was allowing over 10 points a game more than 2009. How can you not see a trend?
OmFG that's what overall defense means you idiots. There isn't a category for "overall defense" they do it by yards overall
When we were ranked first in 2009 it was based on overall yards given up agaisnt the run and pass. The Nfl recognizes this, 5 idiots on TGG do not......Sure we were also ranked first in PPG that year but that isn't what its based on.That's not what Total Defense means
Yea but how much of that has to do with a inept offense that couldnt stay on the field for more then 1 series.I don't pay attention to that stat because Geno put the defense in a lot of tough spots all the time.Obviously they matter but yards given up matters to
So an inept offense that leaves the opposing offense with a short field has nothing to do with yardage allowed? When your opponents drives are starting at their own 40 yard line, you can only give up 60 yards yet still give up seven points.
Your also forgeting the fact that we had the toughest schedule in the league last year.Brady Twice,Stafford,Rivers,Manning,Cutler,Rodgers etc the fact that we were 6th in total yards is amazing
