The 2009 defense had Mark Sanchez and his 20 ints, just like this year had Geno. I just can't fathom how you can disregard the fact that the points allowed increased each of the last 6 seasons, but only care that they were ranked 6th in total yards allowed. So if the Jets kept Ryan and finished 5th in yards allowed in 2015, but also allowed 415 points (30th) that would be an improvement?
IMO the most important stats for a defense: 3rd downs TDs allowed Turnovers created By these metrics, the Jets defense last year was among the worst.
Buffalo and Miami had the same schedule and both allowed less points than the Jets. I wouldn't say its amazing, as the Bills finished 5th in yards. The difference is the Jets allowed 401 points, the most they have allowed since the 1-15 season in 1996. Stop pretending the defense was good last year, it wasn't. However, I think everyone will agree that this year should be good. A new coach, who was successful in Arizona despite injuries and more importantly, a new secondary.
Harris is used primarily in run defense and providing secondary pass rush or zone assignments. Pass coverage, the third option, wasn't his primary duty.
I think we had as good of an off-season as could have reasonably been expected. I'm very excited for next season, and more generally, for our future as a whole. Besides Geno, I'm still somewhat worried about our offensive line.
Jets were 24th in points per drive last year. I guess we need to delve a little deeper and see how many points were scored off of short field turnovers. Either way, this is a much more conclusive stat than just yards.
This thread got dumb fast. Who gives a shit? Anyone with eyes could see we had an OK defense, if it wasn't for our front our defense would've been below average. We were great against the run, good at getting to the QB, shitty against the pass and we couldnt create turnovers or score points on defense. What else is there to talk about? Let's get back on topic and stop bickering about something that truly doesn't matter at all. Great off season, eh?
again, your 'trend' is looking at one statistic in a vacuum, and that statistic is not even defense specific. you are factoring in no other statistical evidence on defense, or changes to personnel. what you are stating is just as tunnel visioned as what LIB is stating, and you are killing him for doing so.
How about the W-L record? You can't be a top 5 defense if you go 4-12, I don't care how bad your offense is supposed to be.
exactly. back to my point, you dont overpay a 2 down player huge money, especially when that extra 5 million harris got overpaid could have gone to wilkerson
marshall is a beast, a threat downfield to snatch it over anyone. i dont recall many times he has taken a bubble screen and gone for 50 yards or taken a slant juke a coue guys and gone to the house. we lack that shift sproles/jackson type
we werent a top 5 defense when we went 4-12. but im not sure that is on the coach. not in year 1 of a rebuild while the GM has gutted the roster, particularly the secondary. we had 2 safties starting at CB. we couldnt cover anyone. as far as decline from 2009 and on, when you are the leagues top defense there is nowhere to go but down. I think you can also only go so far with horrible QB play as a defense, eventually the turnovers are going to where down any D. i think the first couple seasons our defense was ebtter because we didnt let mark throw much. once we tried to open it up and make him a franchise QB things got tougher for the D to overcome.
great metrics, but you have to add Yds allowed to that. Yds allowed is a very important defensive metric, which can tell you a lot about how a defense is performing. As with every other defensive statistic, looking solely at yds allowed can paint a misleading picture, or only half the story tho. Combine Yds allowed with keeping the offense out of the endzone (either red zone efficiency or offensive TD's allowed), and you've got most of the story right there. for good measure, i agree with also adding in 3rd downs, 4th downs, 3 and outs, run defense, and turnovers. adding it all up, the 2014 Jets defense struggled mightily in the secondary... it was obvious tho even w/o statistics..
