I think the cap hit is the same, but we spend less cash by trading as we're off the hook for guaranteed money.
Guaranteed money is money already paid but spread across the duration of the deal, that's the money that gets accelerated into the immediate cap hit.
Even if another team agreed to take Holmes' contract and actually pay him the money, the Jets would still take a cap hit in 2012 equal to the amout of guaranteed money left on his contract. I believe that is about $16 million. He's not going anywhere this year. Maybe next year, if he doesn't produce and continues to be a distraction. But not this year.
Right, the guaranteed money makes sense, should have thought of that. My mistake. They're stuck with the guy unless they just make a statement by cutting him. That would kill the cap, I realize, so we're likely stuck trying to save face to the best of our ability.
Were pretty much stuck with him this season but if we really want to make a statement I think a benching would be in order if he pulls his shit this season.
It might be $9 million right now, but I believe it becomes $16 million on or around March 1st. And, I think according to the CBA, teams can't make trades until after March 10th. So, in effect, it's $16 million.
