Good coaches put their players in the best position to succeed. Good Coaches make in game adjustments. Good coaches put players as I said in position to excel and not fail. Good coaches game plan to the oppositions weaknesses and his teams strengths. Good coaches don't make excuses they take accountability.Good Coaches find answers. Sadly the guy we have roaming our sidelines as HC is none of these things and PS Good coaches DO NOT GET FIRED after 3 bad seasons by the Miami Dolphins and then get hired 2 weeks later but somehow Adam Gase managed to do this.
Hardman has looked good in the KC offense. I bet we'd waste his talents. I foolishly benched him today.
This is a good question. I tend to agree with you that too much is usually attributed to the head coach, but I think there are more factors than just coach and players. There's also the ownership, the other coaches and trainers, and scouts, culture, etc. There's also randomness. And I think the impact of the Head coach varies. Look at Klopp coming to Liverpool. That's one extreme, like Belichik, but probably most of the time head coaches are pretty interchangeable.
Go back to the Matt Forte signing. Bilal Powell was such a big part of the Jets offense down the stretch in 2015. The Jets went out and signed the old, washed up has been made him their 'horse back in 2016 relegated Powell to a bit role. Completely changed & ruined the chemistry the unit had in 2015. Leonard Williams $14.2 million in 2019 because he (supposedly) tries hard. The Enunwa re-signing. And now they're misusing Bell. Poor talent evaluation. Poor coaching.
Belichick takes guys that don't do much on other teams like Van Noy & Collins they become productive, valuable contributers on his team.
yes of course - and thats because the system is in place on both sides of the ball. its been refined over and over since the early 2000's all the while he had 1 QB - Brady. i don't think we will ever see another team with a run like this in the NFL.
Exactly my point. Obviously Belichick is the extreme but he certainly exemplifies the value of coaching.
Belicheat will make the playoff without 12. He has almost done so in the past, (Ask a certain fringe QB named MATT CASSEL. He will tell ya how they missed a playoff with 11-5 record without Brady.) and will do if he has to again. Gase-and-Co? They will not make a playoff, let alone a SB, unless they have HoF QB bailing them out. Yes. Peyton Manning made Gase' resume look much better than what Gase is actually capable of. Same thing will happen with Brady playing for him. Anything less? You are seeing the result with the Jets now. [And Dolphins of the recent past.] 'Nuff said.
I would argue that the Patriots' roster is actually NOT particularly stacked. Belecheat plays money ball. He'll get a few stars here and there, but mostly the roster is made up of guys who fit his system. He rarely has guys who would be major difference makers in any system not led by him and Brady. The coach is the biggest reason for a team's success or failure. A good coach knows how to be flexible and tailor his gameplan and team structure to fit the strengths of the team. He knows how to adjust gameplans, both in game, and week to week whenever they have to compensate for injuries. On the other hand, a bad coach is one dimensional. He has one way of doing things, and if he doesn't have the tools he needs to succeed, the team is just going to suck until he gets the right people.
