Clemens is playing for his NFL career, he better step it up. But I got this gut feeling he is toast. Poor guy, I thought he was a good pick but he never panned out.
Yeah this is true. Hitting it big now would be Clemens best bet. Here's the thing though: I don't think he has it in him to be so good whenever he's in a competition that there's no choice but to give him the job. If he had that in him then he'd have won the job in one of the last three camps. Some guys you give the job not knowing if they have it and then they either prove out or not. Chad was a perfect example of this. He couldn't beat out Vinny for his life because he couldn't shine so brightly in the competition that he justified sitting the longtime incumbent. Then Vinny finally just lost it and he got handed the job and turned out to be just fine as the starter. Unfortunately for Clemens Mangini was not willing to give him the job early enough when Chad buckled in 2007. That left him just garbage time to prove himself and by then the Jets were just a basket case. I'll bet that Sanchez is the QB going into the season this year. He's probably going to look really good in camp and in that context there's almost nothing Kellen Clemens can do to beat him out, even if he had a track record of looking great in camp.
When did he have a real shot at winning the starting job in camp? 2006: Was he really going to win the job as a rookie against a seasoned vet who had been starting since 2002? 2007: Pennington was handed the job and there was no competition. 2008: Favre ended the competition that he was losing but gaining ground quickly in. It will be interesting to see what happens this year. If he can't beat out Sanchez then he'll probably never be a starter in this league.
some of you guys aren't thinking, why does everyone assume Sanchez is going to start this season? Last thing I remember this is still a competition for the QB job, this only makes the competition more competitive to see who truly is the better QB, I mean granted Sanchez is the QB of the future but don't assume he's going to start week 1 at Houston. Clemens can still win this job and still potentially produce at a high level, if Clemens however, plays like shit the first couple weeks making mistakes and throwing low completion %s then we can possibly see Sanchez out there; people grow as football players, and motherfucking Rome wasn't built in a day.
Beat out Sanchez? Sanchez is about to get 40 million guaranteed. He is the Jets QB there is no comp. It's just a matter of how they want to bring him along.
I wonder how many young QBs have 'had franchise written all over them' and then a rash decision was made to start them too early and they failed because of it? Not all 'franchise players' are put in position to succeed.
He's either going to start game 1 or be brought in at some point during the season. It's not going to be based on comp with Clemens, it's going to be based on how they think he is progressing.
Well they are calling it an open competition and Clemens has a 3 year head start. Obviously Sanchez is expected to be the long term answer here. I would imagine Clemens can win the starting job this fall.
Open comp means they hope Sanchez is mature enough and ready enough but they want to make sure. This is about Sanchez not Clemens whether or not Sanchez starts. It won't surprise me if they bring in a Vet QB and showcase Clemens in a preseason game or two.
We should hope so. I have recently found that what looks like the 'ideal' way of doing things isn't always the thing that is done in the World Of Jets PSL Sales.
The worst situation here is throwing him into the fire right away, remember the speed of the NFL and the speed of college are vastly different, lets not throw him into the fire let Clemens prove his worth, you can easily stunt/destroy a QBs growth by throwing him into the fire (y hello thar david carr), but just maybe Sanchez is mentally that strong to go through those bumps and bruises in his rookie year, I would hate to take a chance on it
Disagree. If Clemens starts winning, you don't change anything, regardless of how much money you are burning. (unless of course mgmt cares more about marketing than winning).
No matter what happens this offseason, we are NOT going to "throw him into the fire" and make him win games for us but there is nothing wrong with letting him manage games for us, lots of hand-offs and a bunch of short easy throws. I think we have the pieces in place for him to start though. Strong O-line, strong running game, and 4 good possession targets (Leon, J-co, Smith, and Keller). Let the kid make some easy throws and let him develop the way the Steelers did with Rothlisberger, or Ravens with Flacco. I do not expect Sanchez to step up and be a Matt Ryan in his rookie season, but giving him an opportunity to NOT fail in his first season will be a MUCH better learning tool than sitting behind a guy that can't teach him a whole lot. If we don't win it all this year, I'm not going to be upset. If we get the opportunity to make the playoffs and whatnot, awesome. I think though that this kid is going to be a star, especially after a year or two of NFL development. So let him start, just don't put the fate of the game in his hands.
The worst situation is come 1:15 PM on 9/13/09 that I'm watching CBS pumped out of my gord to see Sanchez come out and lead the team against Houston and Clemens comes out instead. Just shoot me now. We have been waiting since Chad went to the turf against Buffalo in 04 for this.
I can't wait to see him on the field either WB, I'd hate to see him rushed out there too soon though. It would also be nice to get some value out of KC if we can get a good season out of him.
Interesting, I see many of the the folks who were a little reserved at first on this move ( drafting Sanchez) are all now more then happy to throw Clemens out with the bathwater.. An the rest, who are all so sure that Clemens just plain sucks an never will amount to anything in the NFL, voices now seem to have grown into a roar... My question to all of you is... If Sanchez starts and after 8 games behind a (solid offensive line) only wins 3 games, will he suck too? Will all the Clemens haters be calling for his head as well. Because according to most of you 8 games is enough to judge the talent of any NFL player... Again fellow fans,43 years of watching this team and what ever could go wrong, most often did. The mere fact that EVERYONE believes Sanchez is a lock to be a star and his chance of failure is almost zero, scares the hell out of me... I too hope the kid is lights out and knocks our socks off for years to come. Yet, until I see this kid in action under NFL speed and pressure I refuse to jump on to the hype bandwagon... This old fans heart has been broken too many times to fall that easy Because :shit: and in most cases to the Jets and there fans... :jets:
If KC starts the season and the Jets are 8-2 or 10-3 how can you justify changing? If Clemens gets the nod to start the season, only injury or poor play are good reasons to switch to Sanchez.
Which is exactly why the odds on Clemens being allowed to start, unless Sanchez is clearly unready, are extremely low. Going into game 1 next season the Jets are going to have a very small investment in Kellen Clemens and a huge one in Mark Sanchez. Let's say Clemens clicks perfectly at the start of the season and the Jets go 11-5. Well you and I will be thrilled, but the cap people in the building will all be shaking their heads, saying "you cannot pay both of them in 2010 and you cannot get out of paying Sanchez given that his hit is already on the books because of the big bonus and escalating salary numbers, which he clearly will not renegotiate because nothing has changed on his end of the deal." Having the locker room split between Clemens and Sanchez, as it clearly would be in that situation, would be a big no-no too. There's no way the Jets put Kellen Clemens on the field next year unless Sanchez is patently unready to play, which given his skills is very unlikely.
