Hoyer won't sign without some sort of assurance that he'll at least make the roster as a backup. If we sign Hoyer, it is highly unlikely that Fitz is back, especially at our current offer. Hypothetically, let's say we have about $8mil allocated for QB (our Fitz offer). If we sign Hoyer for $4mil, I'd expect our offer to Fitz drops to about $5mil (the balance of the $8mil, plus any savings from cutting Geno). Fitz & Hoyer could then compete for the starting job.
I don't think Hoyer is at the point where he can demand much of anything.....Maybe a small money guarantee but I doubt he can be assured of a roster spot Much rather have Geno/Fitz than Hoyer/Fitz
I am OK with that, but only if the Jets are satisfied that Petty could be a starter going forward. I think the best scenario for the Jets would be Fitz resigns and they draft a QB and let Geno go. So they have Fitz, Petty and the Rookie.
Never said SB bound with any of the three. But I am a Jet fan and the little light at the end of the tunnel is not geno. So either I hope for the best with fitz or just completely give up on the season.
I'm dying for a QB. Too many Browning Nagle types. Fitz is a bitch. He wants his $$ he should of showed up week 17 vs' a lesser opponent.
No, I don't think so. If the Jets signed Hoyer, then selected Lynch in the draft, Geno is thanked for his services and bid adieu. If Fitz then comes back and says he will take $8 million, they say "Too effing bad. We're now set at QB. You had plenty of chances to accept the deal and didn't. That's your tough luck. Have a nice life."
I agree that Fitz, Petty, Rookie would be the best QB group, but at this point, I don't think it's very likely to happen. If I were a betting man, I'd wager that it's Hoyer, Geno & Petty or Hoyer, Petty and a Rookie draft pick.
sign this beast! in all seriousness, give him a 3-6 million deal and call it a day. at worst he is a minor drop off from fitz at about half the cost. at best he is a marginal improvement who is younger. in all likelyhood you get about the same production.
the only difference between hoyer and fitzpatrick is that hoyer was drafted to the pats where he sat for obvious reasons while fitzpatrick got a chance at being an average starter for several teams who all cut him loose at the first chance except for one team(bills) who wish they would have dumped him isntead of giving him that idiotic contract. otherwise, both are journeyman who have never been better then average starters for average teams.
From Jason LaCanfora: Jets appear very interested in signing veteran QB Hoyer The Jets interest in Brian Hoyer is very real and I would not be surprised at all if he has a contract offer of some sort from them by Wednesday. That does not preclude them from signing Ryan Fitzpatrick of course. Hoyer would be good insurance and with teams like Pittsburgh and perhaps Chicago among those eyeing him as a backup, the Jets are smart to be proactive about this. Signing Hoyer would likely spell the end of Geno Smith's star-crossed time in New York, but then that was always going to come to an end soon enough, anyway.
