Yep, Cowart was 27, and Abraham was 29, who was coming off some great seasons.

So What about the young D Line, and the young secondary the pats had? They seemed to get it. The pats plugged in Randal gay, and some guy earthwind, and they still won. Assante Samual, Eugene Wilson, Ellis Hobbs-- That is BS about learning the system. Their line was Ty Warren, Richard Seymore, and Vince Wilfork. All young guys who they drafted. Get your facts straight.

You're wrong-- I'll personally bet you $1000 that neither one of these guys signs a 1 or 2 year deal.

The term ""Cap friendly deal" is BS. All it means is that they play cheap for a year, because of Gaurenteed money-- all it does is screw you later when they are too old to play and they get cut with a huge cap hit. (by the way to all you Curtis lovers who are sucking him off for restructuring- just wait until we cut him and we have a 6 million dollar cap hit.

  5. If Parcells was behind this, no one would be complaining in the least.

Well guess what? Mangini comes from the same school of thought as Parcells and Bellichick. He's gonna bring in veterans who know his system and can instill discipline/leadership in the younger players.

W/ that said, Ashworth is 28 years old and potentially fills a huge hole at RT, so I'm not sure what you're complaining about.

Well those were bad signings for other reasons-- Cowart was injured, and moved to MLB in a 4-3 and never played as well- and abraham was on the bucs with the best d in the league.

anyway, these are all the old FA I was taling about...

Look at some of the older vets we have signed in the past...

Chester McGlocton, Reggie Tounge, Curtis Conway, Terrell Buckley, Donnie Abraham, Sam Cowart. Not to mention our own players who were signed long term at too old an age. Vinny, Curtis, Chrebet, Mawae, Fabini, Marvin Jones, Mo Lewis. Do you know the cap hit we have had to take on all these guys? They were all good to great players at one point, but they are too old. They all just end up being cap casualties in the end, putting us in a worst spot for the next few years. These guys are good for getting a team over the hump, but not for a rebuilding team like the Jets. Making a move for a bunch of overpriced vets at this point will only lead to YEARS of mediocrity. Better to rebuild with youth, and then when you are to playoff caliber, that is when you add a high priced vet that you basicly use for a season or two to get you to the SB.

You can read my explanation about Cowart and Abraham in the other post- but How about these guys...

Warren, Seymour, and Wilfork did not start the majority of their rookie seasons. They started some games, and rotated with veterans. That is exactly the point, somehow it is totally going over your head.

The secondary is a little different, because the schemes are totally different, but it is mostly the same thing. Wilson is the only guy who came in and started from day one, and it wasn't until his second year that he was very effective. Samuel didn't start much his first year, and ROTATED with veterans. Sensing a pattern here? Hobbs was doing the same thing until he was forced to play due to injuries, and he, like the other inexperienced Pats secondary, was poor.

Notice the trend? All these younger guys either rotated with veterans, or didn't play at all until they fully developed and could comprehend the system.

So you think McGinest and von Oelhoffen will both sign 3+ year deals? I doubt it. If one of them does, it will be for less money per.

Thank you for picking the one guy under 30 on my list. i don't like him because he is a corney white guy from NE. I have been forced to hate him for the last few years- i don't want to be forced to like the guy.

If we cut Curtis next year, we save money.
If we cut Curtis the year after that, we save money.
If we cut Curtis the year after that, we save money.

    Oops.

First of all, those guys played a lot early in their careers. All of them were full time starters by their second year at the latest. The other problem with what you are saying is that the pats were superbowl contenders when those guys were rookies-- we are one of the worst teams in the league. bottom line-- do you really think willie mcginist and kimo von olhoffen will help us get to the SB any time soon?

They didn't play "a lot", they were in a rotation where the veterans played most of the time, and in a few games they played most of the time. In their second year they were mostly full time starters, which is exactly what will go on here. McGinest and von Oelhoffen are not being brought in here to win the SB. They are being brought in to lead the rookies, help them understand the system, and make the transition for them easier.

There's no use arguing it, because Mangini is likely going in this direction, and he learned it from Parcells and Belichick. You can't argue how the Patriots did it, because Belichick is the one who did it the way Mangini is looking to do it.

  14. Umm, Yeah. I'll just avoid this thread from now on

Cap hit brother-- That gaurenteed money gets accelerated-- all we did this year was take his base salary, convert it to a bonus which is divided over 5 years-- thats good if you think he will play 5 years, but when he is cut next year, we will have to account for that entire bonus in one year-- thats how cap hits work. Again-- Cap friendly deals are BS. It all comes back. That is why CP was too expensive to Cut-- his bonus money would all be accounted for this year-- 12 million would be accelated to this years cap.

Huh? Yeah there's a cap hit, but the whole point is that we will SAVE money by cutting Martin the rest of his contract after this year. If we cut Pennington, we would have saved $3M on the cap this year.

What rookie LB or DT will be get if we bring those guys in? They are stop-gap players bro. We don't need stop-gap players-- not unless we sign 10 of them. We will not be able to fill every hole with a good replacement-- so lets do it over 2 years, and actually get someone who can start for like 5-6 years like we did with barrett, barton mccareins. Compare those 3 to any other player we have signed in FA over the last 3 years-- they are better players, and they are great value-- they were all cheap.

Rebuilding with youth is what we need to be doing, but signing high priced players is not the right way to go about it right now. Our only option for bringing in younger players is through the draft.

As for the players you listed above, how many of the guys they brought in are counting against the cap right now? Guys like Fabini, Martin, Chrebet etc. got extensions of 4-5 years. I'm suggesting that we sign these guys to 2-3 year deals, little to no cap hit if they're cut early.

Obviously you are totally missing the point. THIS IS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SYSTEM. Mangini comes from the Parcells/Belichick tree, which brings in veteran players who help teach the system and prepare younger players to take over in 1-2 years. Recalling any FA signed in the past is pointless, because that was a completely different philosiphy.

If that's your idea of saving money you're crazy. You think that 12 million dollar hit is savings? Its 12 million dollars against the cap and we don't even get a player on the roster for that. Terrible way to look at it. i really can't talk with you anymore-- this is killing me.
