Whoah! I don't agree with comparing White,a first-round talent, with Houston,a 6th round draft after-thought who performed decently when given the job out of necessity. I am completely baffled with the notion that somehow Houston is our future. He is a very nice BACK-UP. 5th-7th round RBs are known as BACK-UPS. Did Houston do anything at all extraordinary last year? Good grief, any Jets fan satisfied with letting Houston be Martin's heir as starter has incredibly low standards. Name all the NFL teams with a worse starting RB than Houston. If the Jets FO think they can get by another year with Curtis/Houston/Blaylock that's fine. But I HIGHLY doubt anyone there is thinking,"let's not draft a top RB prospect because we have such a future stud in Cedric Houston."
I should have said "get someone who wants to block for him or a speed back that has break away speed and can run the sweep" we dont need another powerback. I dont care what round he was drafted in, he had an ok year on a shitty team with no blocking, a bad QB, and dumb play calling. If you go by average per carry then Carolina, New England, Greenbay and Arizona all were worse then the Jets. If you go by rushing td then Houston, SF, NO, Tenn, Buf, Bal, Cle, Arz are worse. If you go by first downs then Phi, Tenn, SF, Det, and Arz are worse. I dont know if Houston will be our future back or not but we need to see him play with a different team and coaching. We have other choices of backs to chose from in later rounds that are not going to cost us that much. That I think are better choices then White like Maroney, Williams, or Addai. One of these guys is going to be there at #35.
But honestly, can you equate Cedric Houston to Lendale White? Their college careers were vastly different, granted they did play around different talent levels. However, Lendale's speed is equal to Ced's at a heavier weight. Don't get me wrong, I like Cedric Houston, but I seriously don't see him being a large contributor on offense, especially with Blaylock around.
I just dont think we need him we already have a powerback. Do you think that he would be better for our team then the other guys that we could draft? That is more my point we need a speed back not another powerback.
Based on Mangini's statement about guys who work hard and have good character, and the way Lendale has carried himself this work-out season, i strongly doubt we see him in NY.
I'd rather have Lawernce Maroney or Joseph Adai. Based on what happened that proday last week, White has shown questionable work ethic. I'm selling as far as the hype on White goes. If he was so damn great then why was Reggie Bush starting and not White?
I think if talent were a perogative and White were available for our 2nd pick, you'd have to take him at no.29 on that basis alone. One bad pro day should not wipe out all of his magnificent achievements at USC, nor his stellar performance in the Rose Bowl.
White may be talented, but I would have to pass on him. Like others have stated, we already have a powerback on the roster. Houston would have been a first or second round pick if it wasn't for his thyroid condition. Now that the condition has been treated, I fully expect Houston to be a valuable contributor on this team. We should be looking for a replacement for Curtis, and unfortuanately Lendale White does not fit that profile. Why would we draft another powerback and have a Thunder and Thunder running attack?
Angry! Upgrading our RB-by-committee is a luxury that we can not afford to fill in the first round. We have too many holes to fill on both sides of the ball, and I would prefer use our #29 on a center or tackle. This point may be moot, however, since I think Denver will take him at #22 before us, Pitt, & Carolina.
