Sumlin just signed an extension with A&M.

my top 2 choices are: Jay Gruden and Daryl Bevell.

both offensive minded and I think both are ready to take helm of a team. Idzik has the connection with Bevell from Seattle so I could see that working.

I actually thought of Daryl Bevell after I posted in this thread.

I wouldn't mind. QB coach of the Seahawks.

Life after Rex doesn't have to be the apocalyptic mess a lot of his minions believe it will. If the new guy, whomever that is, can improve the offense to the point of an extra 10ppg or so, this team will be in a lot better shape. Having a great defense only works if you can outscore the other team and right now, the Jets can't do that.

Who? Any OFFENSIVE MINDED coach with a proven track record will do just fine. No more guys that have to learn on the job. I would prefer a retread over a guy with a blank NFL resume. No more guys that have been passed over multiple times either. Why? because there's a reason why they were passed over in the first place.

If Woody has to open the vault to get this candidate, then dammit, open the f'n vault and spend some of that PSL money you squeezed out of your fanbase.

Lastly, For the Love of God, NO MORE F'N PROJECTS ! Get the guy that has played and/or coached in an pro style offense in college. Not the guy that played Wr in the single wing, 3yds and a punt offense.

    Rant over... Carry on

i may be in the minority but if the jets are going to be in the market for a head coach they are gonna need to make a splash - meaning hire someone with a name and not someone with zero head coaching experience in the NFL.

if that name isn't there then RR may as well stay put.

we have been down the road too much with the likes of coslet, carrol, kotite, edwards, mangini, and ryan. - all of whom were less than qualified when they were hired, IMO.

just goes to show how shallow the pool really is.

the only name i would endorse now would be gruden - jon gruden

If Sanchez was the starting QB of the Jets, he would not have been in the game against the Giants.

Shaw would be the guy on this list to target. He's continued what Harbaugh started at Stanford and has them a national power. He's also young and hungry and would be looking to make a name for himself as an NFL HC. He's got the perfect pedigree. Idzik also should be looking at other up and coming asst. coaches from around the league with successful teams. Jason Garrett? The guy can barely manage to get a team with Top 10 talent into the playoffs. He's a career coordinator who just got lucky that he went to work for Jerry Jones who has become delusional as a football guy.

I agree with Shaw. As a Notre Dame fan he is impressive and has a physical style of play that we could use.

When they get rid of Rex, they should look in this direction:

    1) First and foremost, it's got to be an offensive-minded coach. This organization has been hiring guys with a defensive background for way, way too long. It's like Kotite scared them off that side of the ball - because we haven't seen an offensive minded head coach since. Now Kotite was a disaster, but that was about HIM, not about an offensive coach. 20 years is way too long without an offensive head coach.

    2) It shouldn't be a retread. Hiring a Mike Tice or a Mike Shanahan (after he gets canned) or even a Jon Gruden, personally, I don't think is the answer. They should go after a young and hungry guy, who is up and coming and who will be innovative, and understands the new style of football being played.

    3) He should be the opposite of Rex. That means without the big personality. Making it about the players, not himself. I don't know if this should be a prerequisite (sp?) but this organization has had success switching back and forth between players coach's and more disciplinarians. Since Rex is the ultimate player's coach, a more disciplinarian approach might be the right medicine.

    4) Lastly, this coach should have some sort of record of success with, coaching or at the QB position. I want a coach who understands how to develop and manage the most important position on the field. Bonus points if he brings with him a plan to fix our mess.

-Chip Kelly would've been a great hire, Jim Harbaugh as well. I want a guy like this even if I haven't got the name in mind- but that's not my job. That's Idzik's. Go out and get a guy like this, even if it's from the college or coordinator ranks.

id think they should hire whoever the general manager feels the most comfortable with to lead the team to the superbowl.

    the rest is just conjecture.

on a side note i would kill people for david shaw to be notre dames head coach.

I'll throw out a name just for grins.. How about Gus Malzahn of Auburn? Everything that guy has touched has turned to gold.

He's new to Auburn of course and that's like his dream job in a way, but boatloads of Woody's inheritance money might talk!

Lovie Smith is another Rex Ryan except he had more success. I wouldn't throw up if we got Lovie but it might turn out to be the same thing. He's a lot better than most of those guys on these lists. But I think that Idzik would get a Coordinator or an Asst. Coach he knows and has worked with. I honestly don't think that Idzik was looking to fire Rex just because he was saddled with him at the start of the season. He seemed to be genuinely happy at the good start and when I saw him walking off the field last week he looked grim. If Rex had been successful this season I don't think he would have had a problem re-signing him to an extension. I'm just very very happy they didn't do it three weeks ago.

Rex is a far better defensive coach and it's not even close. GTFO out with this Lovie Smith crap. He was fired for the same reason Rex maybe fired here.

Gary Kubiak would be my choice if Rex were to get fired. I hope Rex doesn't get fired though

Cowher is waiting for the Giants job. I want Rex to stay fuck anybody else. The only way you fire Rex is if the team quit on him and so far that hasn't been the case.

Actually Jay Gruden has done a great job with the Bengals offense. And broke in a rookie Qb last season with a lot of success. And Jay has been a head coach and was a winner for years in the Arena League. He will get a shot and I don't see a better candidate around.

The defense showed effort to me. The offense stunk.

Perhaps for the first quarter they did. After that, sadly it appeared the defense collectively said: "fuck it"

The offense never did show up and it showed in their overall lack of effort. On whole, the team mailed it in yesterday. If we see consecutive weeks with this kind of "effort", would you consider that quitting on Rex?
