Look, Ramsey wasn't the answer yesterday. Come on. And I like Pennington... in fact, I really love the guy. Love his leadership, love his intelligence, his work ethic, his constant positive attitude. I even love his dink-and-dunk game when it's on and working. These are all terrific attributes and we're going to miss some of them in the future because you're just not going to find a guy with everything. But Chad has a huge flaw, and that's being Chad Pennington. You'd have to be from Mars to not know that he can't laser, rocket-arm the ball. So every defense game-plans us close and dares Chad to throw it deep. Yesterday they were in the box and in his face unmercifully. Take the KC '05 game as a model and game-plan accordingly. Put some pressure and here comes the f*cking Chinese Fire Drill. I'm really tired of it. And there is no "fix." Yesterday Chad said, "We're going to fix it." You can't fix a non-rocket arm deep threat. It's just the way it is. And I'll say another thing... Mangini knows it too. You could just read his f*cking mind on the sidelines yesterday. This is why he started TC with "it's anyone's job" and that's the way it'll be this August too. Chad will have to fight for his job again, but this time I give the edge to Clemens, unless he stinks up the field in preseason.
Your last paragraph is dead on. We are going to fix it? Thats like the guy with the small you know what telling his future bride that "hes going to fix it". It is what it is..and Chad has done a masterful job working around the fact...fact..that his arm strength is the worst in the NFL..and perhaps the worst I can ever remember of any qb that comes to mind.
You are so spot on it's incredible. We should consider ourselves extremely fortunate that we made it to 7-6 on the arm of Pennington. He is a master at compensating for the damned thing. So much so, any other QB we put in there is going to take a back seat to Chad in terms of player motivation, leadership, workmanship, intelligence, unselfishness... all the intangibles Mangini loves. He does a great job of making up for the lack of the arm. I just hope Clemens (or whoever the guy is) has just 80% of Chad's other attributes and qualities. But after yesterday I'm willing to take on that challenge though. I've just seen it far too many times. I can't (won't) go through another 16-game season worrying about the pressure and the Chinese Fire Drills it causes. I want a guy who will burn them with the laser ball on occasion. It doesn't even have to be deep, but it's got to have zip. And deep won't hurt either, but we've got to have this going forward and we don't have it now.
The Real Reason For All this Chad Controversy: He is still a decent quarterback. Many TGGers said he was done after the 2nd surgery in 2005. Then he comes back in 2006, puts the team on his shoulder Week 1 and gives the team hope. Almost beats the Patriots and Colts, and goes into Buffalo and pulls out a win. Then those fans said maybe he is back! This is amazing! Then he fell back to Earth and has been on and off the rest of the season. The way Chad goes is normally how the team goes, so 7-6 supports my thought.
listen here pal, not only did the wife buy it when I told her that, but I actually did fix it!!!! I took an old bong I had and fashioned an enlargement pump out of it.....lets just say we dont watch as much TV as we once did pal.:breakdance:
He can still play in the NFL. Many thought he couldn't. He came back and was playing really good at the begining of the season. So his fans thought the 2002 Chad was back. Then he came back to Earth and everyone is upset about it and are taking it out on him.
the offensive line cost us today. Mostly Brick, he needs to hit the weights if a big white guy can own his ass time after time.
So, basically, you're saying that Chad Pennington is just a mediocre quarterback, and 2002 was a fluke since he "came back to Earth." I refuse to accept mediocrity.
No, I for one am really not "taking it out on him." I like Chad, but I've said right along that he's our interim QB for this year. Perhaps I've been wrong, but I thought that was understood by most Jets fans, especially those on this board. In my mind, Chad is and has been all year a temporary, developmental QB... developmental for the rest of the team, that is... to help bring along the talent and be there to give them experience. Clemens wasn't ready to start and Chad was, even though we all really know deep down inside that his dink-and-dunk would never have gotten us deep into the playoffs. At least, I thought most of us realized that. I find myself loving everything that Chad did for us and the example he has set for many years to come so far as what a real team QB should act like and lead like. But we've all got to face the reality that Chad is not the answer for SB contention. Not against tough teams. He's good in all other phases of execution except keeping other DEFs honest, and that's a f*cking killer.
How did I say 2002 was a fluke? :rofl2: He was injured 3 straight years after that. So of course he isn't the same QB from 2002. He is still good though. Not elite, but good. Better than mediocre.
except sometimes the whole team plays well and Chad blows the game; something you can't endure from the QB position. i dont understand: it's "Chad won us this game, almost beat Indy, etc," but when he wets the bed and loses the game, it's always "the whole team played badly, coaching was terrible, etc." there've been some games where we've won in spite of Chad and some games where he's carried us. but the fact that now we can tell when he'll have a bad game (based on the D) and that he's so inconsistent means he is not the future QB. there's no stability with him, proved by his week-to-week play that leaves us wondering which Chad will show up. how many of the serious contenders have that problem at QB? cheers
I personally want him to be our QB coach, and a few years after that the OC, and then the eventual successor to Mangini as HC. I figure 5 years as QB coach, 5 years at OC, and then Mangini will probably need a break, and then Chad as HC for 10 years. That's 20 years of stability! I think as a player he is not very good, but I do think he has everything needed to be successful as a coach in this league. Chances are probably not with us, he probably won't retire after this year. Maybe Schotty refuses to take an HC job somewhere else, or maybe Mangini doesn't pan out. I don't really think any of that will happen though. More than likely Chad ends up coaching the Chiefs somewhere down the line instead.
Yet, you're still willing to accept Pennington starting the rest of the season. That makes about as much sense as refusing to eat tacos, then demanding that they be served to you, at the same time. If you're looking for Pro Bowlers at every position, that's just not a realistic option. You, being a self-proclaimed "realist", should know that.
At this current point in the season, giving the reins to Clemens makes no sense because playoffs are still a possibility. Giving the reins to Ramsey makes no sense at any point in any team's history. Obviously Pennington isn't my ideal choice for the future, like I have said multiple f'n times in this thread, which has been the point I've pounded into the ground, but apparently your skull is too thick to comprehend what I am saying. You can't fix the quarterback season in Weeks 14 and 15, something I know, which is why I HAVE SAID THAT PENNINGTON IS THE BEST QUARTERBACK FOR THE REST OF THIS SEASON. I'm not looking for Pro Bowlers at every position. But I would like a quarterback who can do more than "not lose." I'd like a quarterback who can do more than just manage a game. I'd like a quarterback who isn't afraid to throw downfield. Yes, when Chad does, he is intercepted. That is because of his arm. He CAN'T throw downfield on a consistently effective basis. Don't bring up Kyle Boller as an example. I don't want a Kyle Boller type arm. I want a quarterback who can make the throws when needed. A quarterback who has some zip on his passes. Like 3rdand15 brought up: look at his film from 2002 and 2003 and whatnot. Look at his zip then. It's incredible compared to what he has today. I want THAT Pennington. THAT Pennington is lost to multiple shoulder surgeries. Pennington WAS an ideal quarterback for the Jets' future at one point. And then he got his arm decimated twice. Pennington is no longer that Pennington. He is now weaker-armed than ever. He can't make these throws downfield without floating the ball; without putting his receiver in a poor position to break free for a touchdown; without leaving his receiver to get killed after the catch; without allowing the defenders ideal opportunities to make legitimate plays on the ball. Go ahead and keep saying whatever you want about my opinion on Pennington. I've said it again and again despite your inability to comprehend it; Pennington may have been the future in the past; he may have had "it" at one point; but you know what? One huge contract and two shoulder surgeries later, Chad Pennington isn't the quarterback we drafted out of Marshall. If the Jets want to win a Super Bowl, Chad Pennington cannot be the on-field leader of this New York Jets team. He has the charisma, he has the personality, he has the leadership; he doesn't have the most important thing, and that is the physical capability and skill to perform on the field. Believe me, I wish it had never came to this with Pennington. I always rooted him on. I still root for him to perform well because his success is our success. The fact is, he will never be the quarterback he once was; the quarterback he should be. We have to accept that and move on. Maybe Kellen Clemens is the Jets' solution at quarterback. Maybe not. There is only one way to find out, and that is to give him a chance. I'm not talking about for a drive or two at the end of the blow out. I'm not talking about a meaningless game or two in a season that is lost. I'm not talking about a span of 4 games with an outside shot at the playoffs. I'm talking about a new season. A full, clean plate. Give him HIS shot to lead the Jets. Don't give him Chad's team, a team that Chad has led thus far.
Exactly, the playcalling in this game blew chunks. Schott had 2 good reverses but the plays were flat from top to bottom..
