I can call him overrated because he wasn't as good as his stats indicate. Secondly, Alexander never wore down defenses. The OL of Walter Jones, Steve Hutchinson and Robbie Tobeck wore down the defense.
This totally makes my point on why I included Maurice Morris' stats into the discussion. Thanks

That doesn't make sense, they both had great OLs and Holmes had a great OL in Baltimore too.

He had a broken bone in his foot in 2006.

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/seahawks/2006-12-06-sw-shaun-alexander_x.htm

That YPC went up b/c of Adrian Peterson.

I disagree. Would a GOOD RB have put up GOOD #s? of course but not the ridiculous #s Alexander was putting up. A GOOD RB is not putting up 1800 yds and 26 TDs- Adrian Murrell behind that OL was not putting up 1800 yds and 26 TDs.

Shaun Alexander is the most overrated player in the history of the NFL.

Don't say he got injured and that's why his numbers dropped. HE GOT PAID- THAT's why his numbers dropped. He just so happened to have the best Tackle and Guard combo in the entire league for most of his career. Peter King said after the playoff loss to Green Bay "I don't think I've ever seen a running back run softer than Alexander." Spot on.

BTW, any player in the league would've been upset about missing the rushing title? BULLSHIT. Most may have been, but would have had the class to say "Gosh, good thing we won that game and have a chance to head to the Super Bowl!" He's a worthless running back, that's why nobody has signed him.

I'm playing devil's advocate here, this is a popular discussion. Why sign players entering free agency at all? The "got paid, no need to play" argument has been cited and cited, show me the proof. J. Abraham would be a prime example for me, but he never flat out said this was the case.

How does that not make sense? If both played on the same average OL Holmes would have been the better RB.

The OL in 1998 for Baltimore wasn't great it was an average OL with one superstar in the making - Jonathan Ogden.

Yes, this is correct. I screwed that up.

No, it went up because Taylor was banged up most of 06 and Peterson and Taylor combined, stayed healthy and were a good compliment to each other running behind a line led by Steve Hutchinson who is the best OG in football.

Why not? Your statement can't be proven correct or incorrect but behind that OL Adrian Murrell certainly could have ran for 1800 yds and considering all they did was run when they got inside the 10 definitely could have gotten 26 TDs

It feels as if Priest Holmes went from awesome to crap in a matter of seconds

First of, as we saw last year rsuhing TDs are hard to come by even inside the 5 but he hasn't just been an inside the 5 scoring threat.

He has his share of 1 yarders but he has tons of long TD runs which is very impressive.

Rushing TDs inside the 5 aren't hard to come by when you are running behind Steve Hutchinson, Walter Jones and Mack Strong. If you are referring to the Jets 2007 season as an example of it being difficult to run inside the 5 ... well... i think that's a bad comparison.

21 of his 28 TD's were inside the 10 yardline during his MVP season. Like I said, when they got inside the 10 all they did was run.

If you want to call Art Monk a compiler...well this also looks an awful lot like a compiler as well. 55 of the 88 TDs you have listed were inside the 5..

    Did you see all of the long TD runs? 60, 40, 88, 10, 29, 44, 20, 46, 14, ...

Monk was a compiler b/c he played for so long, Alexander was great in a 5 year stretch. In Monk's 15 years he was top 10 in recs 4 times, in8 years Alexander has been top 10 in rush yds 4 times. In 15 years Monk was top 10 in rec TDs ONCE(tied 9th), Alexander in 8 years has been top 10 5 times and led twice. The monk comparison isn't a good one.

In 1989, Christian Okoye lead the league with 1480 rushing yards.
Barry Sanders finished in second place with 1470 yards.
Sanders was taken out early in the season finale even though he was healthy. The game had already been decided and Sanders saw no reason to stay in the game just to get a stat title.

Alexander was not the same type of guy as Sanders.

    20? 14? 10? Those aren't and shouldn't be considered "long" runs.

    You also could have written,
"So wait, junc wants to use stats to show that Alexander was great yet Steve Young is garbage despite incredible stats?"

Also, instead of editing my earlier post, I'll make a small correction here. If I recall correctly, it wasn't so much that Sanders was taken out of the game. He opted to sit out the remainder of it because the outcome had been decided. The coaches wanted him to play in garbage time to get the extra 11 yards to win the rushing crown. Sanders, to his credit, was not interested.

most great RB's benefit from top O-Lines, so that is hardly an indictment of Alexander's ability -- it is a prerequisite to be a top RB. Minus Barry Sanders and maybe Jim Brown, most RB's don't succeed on their own talent alone.

that being said, Alexander is a pussy.

Yeah, RBs need their line, that's why they, or the smart ones, pay homage to their line all the time in interviews. LT, is considered a class act by many because of gestures like when he broke the single season TD mark and posed for photos in the end zone with all of the offensive linemen, and quoted later ["I wanted them all to be in the photograph so they can show their grandchildren they played a role in a historical record..."]

JIm Brown had a great OL. Walter Payton did not for the most part though

Brown was fortunate enough to run behind the following guys
Jim Ray Smith 5 time pro bowler 3 tim all pro
Mike McCormack 6 time pro bowler
Gene Hickerson 6 time pro bowler 3 time all pro
    Lou Groza
Dick Schafrath 6 time pro bowler 4 time all pro
John Morrow 2 time pro bowler

Even still..I don't think it would have mattered if he had run behind a weak OL. Brown still would have gotten his yards and would be a HOF'er

I agree with your post...but I could never stand Alexander. Sick player and all that...but never could be a fan.

I don't think anyone beats Vick for "quickest fall of a star athlete" so far this century.

Did I once call Alexander great? ARod is supposed to be the best player in baseball. That's not a good comparison. Stick to baseball.

20 yds isn't a long run? a 10 yd TD run is alot longer than it looks b/c D's are so packed in near the GL. It's alot harder to have a 10 yd run from the 10 yd line than it is from midfield. You take away credit for runs inside the 10 and nopw you are taking away credit for 10, 14 and 20 yd runs. What can this guy do to impress you?

Steve Young was a choker, handed a dynasty and he got lucky Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones split or he wouldn't have the 1 title he has. What that has to do w/ Shaun Alexander I don't know, I never said Young didn't belong in the Hall I said he wasn't near the geratest QBs of all time and that he was overrated. Whgere did I ever call Alexander an all-time great? You guys are so funny w/ your attempts to get things over on me.

As far as Barry goes I think we'd all agree he was a unique player. This is a guy who never showed emotion. I don 't think he loved football he was just great at it so he played it. He walked away when he was close to the all-time record. he was different.
