I wonder if it just came out casual, and Manish didn't report it without asking. Consider the context...the quote is accurate...if they don't fix the offense, Rex is effed as a HC. Which means back to DC for a 'maybe' team. I speculated earlier, that maybe it was in context with Woody not wanting to pay Haley and Sparano both.

No, just saying that having an over-sized ego at head coach and a quiet technician at DC has been known to create strain in the relationship before. Parcells brought Belichik along with him to the Jets but their relationship got worse. Maybe Rex and Pettine are the same thing. The other thing is that if you're Mike Pettine watching the Jets go through the spasms of the last two years you probably have said a few unwise things along the way to your associates. If one of those associates happens to be a beat reporter, well that's your bad.
"Clean the house" should include designated Jets beat writters. There is no point of fighting press' stirring things up in addition to internal problems and on-field opponents. I wonder if a team can "strongly request" from a newspaper or network to be assigned another reporter.
Another thing, the original Manish report said that Rex has been telling "anyone who would listen" that he'd be better off getting fired if Woody isn't going to invest in the offense. "Anyone who would listen" is a lot of people. If this is true, more people than Pettine would have heard him say it. Rex is flat out denying that he said it. If their is a "mole" their is more than one. Personally, I wouldn't be shocked at all if Mehta just had a wild imagination and he's about to pay the piper.
That or Manish is being overly sensational about the story. Would not be the first time a writer exaggerated the facts.
Not to mention if he was blabbing like that somebody else would have picked up on it. Matt Slauson bitched about Tebow once in September and saw it hit the back pages in November.

Francessa has been cut off from the jets and so his opinion and claims of pettine being the source have absolutely no credibility. Also, Pettine and Rex are tied at the hip. I just don't see how Pettine would do that
The media is ruining this team. No other team in the league has to deal with this shit. Manish Mehta is one of the most irreputable writers I have ever encountered. He deals with more anonymous sources than I have ever seen, how does HE still have a job?
I think we can all admit that this season has been an unmitigated disaster in every way. The leaked story is bad enough, to call a press conference about it is asinine, they will have a field day with it and make it a much bigger deal than it is. Just issue one denial and let it go, fire those talking and move on.
I don't think it's asinine at all. I think it's about damn time they got to the bottom of Manish's anonymous sources. Enough is enough.
