It was indeed Herm, but it was a game-specific quote - with Brooks Bollinger about to play against the Ravens. It was not Herm's overall philosophy, to be fair! Even so, that game was one of the most painful I've ever seen. The coaches just wouldn't let Bolly play and basically rolled over for the Ravens.
An awful lot of things in sports (and life) can not be accomplished unless one has the confidence that the determination, hard work and the belief that one's goals can be achieved is visualized. If some fire baller on the mound already has you beat mentally before you step in the box, you are his next stirke out victim. You step into the box KNOWING you can hit this guy... you visualize it. You BELIEVE it. This is how winners approach things. Success isn't assured, but the chance of success goes up 300%. If you don't think you can win, it is unlikely that you will. Winners, even after a loss, still believe they can win given the next opportunity. Ryan sounds like a winner to me. Is quiet confidence better than boisterous confidence? I think Mangini had quiet confidence, but I don't mind the change at all.
Great post TBJ. Henry Ford made a quote that this post made me think of. "Whether you believe you can do a thing or not, you are right." Words to live by.
Ok... Steelers Organization is nothing like the laughingstock of a tradition that Jets have. Still, it took Mike Tomlin, of all HCs, but a mere 2 years to reach the SB. And we all know their offensive side is not exactly loaded on talent. They did it with their defense. Now, who's there to say the same can't be done here in NY?
If he does not win a SB during his 4 year contract & his team collapses just like Manginis did what do U think will occur?
He also said he expects to be fired if he doesn't. Good for him. About time somebody puts their job on the line in this world instead of all the pussies we have now running things.
I like what I hear from Rex, who was my #2 favorite if Cowher was out of the picture. Now, it is all about "show me" and production. Even if we don't get a SB in 4 more yrs; if we win the division 2 or 3 times and go to an AFC Championship in the New Meadow Lands I would say that is a big step in the right direction. I know for some, it is SB or bust; and, after 40 years I can't blame you, but I just want to see us part from mediocraty for an extended period of time. Yes, I do hope we win a SB; I often ponder whether it will ever happen before I, well....you know.....croak.
Can someone post a link to this presser? I just watched "A message from Jets head coach Rex Ryan" on NYJ.com. I like that he said that he knows the Jets will make mistakes, but they'll make'em at 100mph. He does seem quite confident for a first time HC though. Hopefully he can get the team to play with that swagger as well.
I like his enthusiasm. But I hope I am not sitting here in a few years thinking, there goes another guy who didnt get it done for us.....
Or maybe you're ignoring the fact Tomlin had a team that had recently won the SB...Its not really his team. He inherited it. If he goes to the SB after 3 more yrs, then its his team.
I wasn't entierly sold on Ryan until the press conference. As an expert shit talker, I LOVED hearing the boasting. It's about time we have someone who can inspire confidence and a kick ass attitude in our locker room. I think that's important. Whether he accomplishes it only time and talent will tell. But one of the head coach's most important jobs is motivation, and I can see him making the Jets players believe in themselves.
The Steelers have had the same defensive scheme for about 15 years, and they have their SB-winning QB with more experience and much more playmaking ability than he had then, and a disciplined, grind-it-out offensive philosophy. The Jets have had the same defensive philosophy for about a week, and it hasn't even been installed yet. They have a 40 year old QB with an injured arm considering retirement, 2 question marks backing him up, and god knows what on offense as far as philosophies go.
