Obviously I do not agree it is pointless to play Vick since I do not accept the assumption that he will not be back next year.
He definitely won't be back next year. He's gone. Even if he's not there's no point in playing him at 1-8.
probably those assuming Smith would succeed enough to take over as a solid starter this year would see no need to bring Vick back next year, and if that were the case, I would agree, so perhaps that is the basis for such a reflexive assumption. Or if Vick signaled he's about to retire, or wants to play somewhere else, or will demand too much money, or something like that. But since Smith sucks, and there's probably not going to be a whole lot of vet Qb's better than Vick reasonably available in the coming off season, he has to be considered.
Why are people so sure Vick won't be here next year? If he plays well and wins a few games down the stretch there's no reason not to keep him around as a stop-gap QB until we groom someone else. In fact, it's probably our smartest move going forward. What's the alternative? ... play Simms, go 1-15 and throw the next guy to the wolves on opening day? No thanks.
I agree. It's as if there has been some announcement that Vick has said he refuses to come back next year that all these guys certain he will not have heard about, and I must have been in the bathroom or something. What better option is there next year than to bring back Vick compared to not doing so? Let's hear it. So far, I have not heard it.
While I don't think Simms should start, I do think he has talent and is worth to continue developing. I haven't seen anything from him that makes me think he doesn't have the tools to MAYBE be a legit NFL QB. He certainly has the size, and the arm, and even the heritage. I wouldn't even mention his Dad but we've seen plenty of sons of QB's proliferating. The thing with Matt Simms is that his college career got screwed up. Looking at him then and now, I'd say he was somewhat of a later bloomer. He physically looks bigger and stronger now than in his college days - true for most QB's. I like that we've had him here for a few years now and wonder how he compares to the others in practice. I see Simms as a late bloomer who has potential to become a pro QB. I don't know you why you say he has no talent. He has no experience, but he's none nothing as a Jet that I've seen to say he has no talent.
The same people trashing Simms were the same ones boosting Smith in the past two offseasons like he had some real potential. I held out some hope for Geno this year against my better judgment, but he's a fraud. A football idiot. Keeping Vick in at this point would probably yield worse results than Simms, and will probably tell us less about the team in evaluative terms. Vick has been on vacation since he signed with the Jets.
Keeping Vick as a stopgap while we develop our next young QB prospect is an idea that has grown more appealing to me the more and more I think about it. The only problem is that I just don't trust Vick to stay healthy for any extended period of time. Like, at all.
The jets should use an outside consulting firm to find a quarterback. Worked out well with the GM slot.
And just where the hell were you, when I said exactly the same stuff with Sanchez years ago? [That is, I suggested keeping Sanchez so the next rookie QB can grow and learn. AFTER Idzik came along.]
Quite obviously, you don't get it. You didn't - and still don't. Whether it was time for Sanchez and Jets to part ways is not even the point.
