Accuracy didn’t look good and he was late on throws. Honestly, he looked like a college QB in a system he knows.
Boyle was 3 steps and ball out. One read all night. I felt like I was watching Daniel Jones. No reads, no progressions. Just 3 steps, ball out regardless if the defender is draped all over him
Zach needs to sit for a full year – and get really comfortable in the offense. He's nervous, uncomfortable and know his career is one the line over the next two season. He's a really nice kid and his family is supporting him well (none of the silly stuff with his Mom on IG). Honestly this is now a FO problem. JD just really put too much on him and he ended up being much worse than Sam Darnold. Man this was an all-time bad move to not trade the #2. At this point - after seeing him last night - you can / have to hope he gets it.....soon.
I think we are more likely approaching bust territory with Zach. Look at some of the other top QB's in the league. Burrow and Herbert played well from year 1 and are getting better. Allen struggled his rookie year, showed nice improvement in year 2 and then really took off year 3. Mahomes has been good right from the start and now has 2 Super Bowls on his resume. Lawrence struggled his rookie but then had a nice 2nd season and is only getting better. Zach going into year 3 still doesn't look good out there. No TD drives against the Browns backups. All of the other QB's I mentioned showed they have the "IT" factor. Zach hasn't
You were all able to say how bad he looked from five passes that he completed 3 for 65 yards. What is the agenda?
he made a good throw on that bomb to a wide open Taylor. I think though if he wasn't a bust he'd been on the sideline in street clothes prepping for the regular season instead of throwing passes to a practice squad guy named Malik Taylor against practice squad opponents its just where we are, he's a fringe NFL player playing against other fringe NFL players now until the real thing starts and they all dont see the field Lets pray Rodgers never gets hurt
We are way past that argument. If it makes you happy to keep that narrative up that is fine and your right. The rest of us are seeing if he is progressing in this new offense. We saw some signs last night but if you can tell either way after five passes well, all the power to you.
It was 5 passes on 6 drop-backs guys. Let's not act like last night was overly good or bad from Zach. I saw some positives and the one glaring negative (bad footwork on the sailed pass). All things considered, he was fine, which is better than what he's mostly been for his career so far. Really hoping they give him a full half in the next 2 preseason games to give him a chance to get into rhythm and see what he can do.
We got to see more of the media support he gets from one of those drop backs. He spun around in the pocket then fell down and Collinsworth said how that was a good play. must be some Jetblue kickbacks there
Connor Hughes: Zach Wilson is done for the night. Tim Boyle is coming in. Thought Wilson looked solid. The highlight, obviously, was the 57-yard pass to Taylor. It illustrated exactly what the #Jets have been asking their young quarterback to do: Just play quarterback. Wilson had a tendency to try to do too much too often. He didn't on that play. Snap. Read defense. Go through your progressions. See a player open. Get him the ball. The fact the ball traveled 50+ in air and hit Taylor perfectly in stride is exactly what makes Wilson's talent so tantalizing. It's clearly there. He just needs consistency. Thursday night was a step in the right direction. Wilson can build on this. I'd expect him to play a bit more these final three preseason games.
OMG, why dwell on the good. God forbid. Let’s dwell on the fact that he tripped on the next play. He went thru his progression properly, he took off running with plenty of daylight, and he tripped. See, the fact that he tripped is all that must be mentioned to show he is not improving. LOL
To be fair, he seemingly worked through his progressions, saw nothing open, pulled the ball down, and tried to make a play for the first down. Other than the stupid pirouette, which I've already said he's gotta cut out, I don't really see any big negative with that play.
Yesterday doesn’t really matter one way or another - he still absolutely sucks. It’ll be one of the greatest turnarounds in NFL history if he ends up not sucking. We can see the difference across three of our last four drafted quarterbacks. Geno and Darnold looked confident in what they were doing when they were reading the defense, they were just reading it completely wrong. That comes with coaching. Wilson doesn’t look like he knows how to read anything in the midst of a drop back and play. He’s not reading it right or wrong he’s just flinging it around. Watch his eyes. Nice pass yesterday on a set go-route. He has a very good NFL arm. I’m not sure why the coaching staff didn’t try more plays like that with him to be honest. Close the field down and tell him what to do.
Tom, if you haven't seen Zach's talent, then perhaps you need glasses. Other players were slipping last night. That's why Becton only played 7 snaps. He was worried that he'd re-injure his knee on that turf. How is Zach supposed to get into a rhythm when every series he handed off on 1st and 2nd down and then had to pass on 3rd and long? Zach DID show progress. He looked much more poised, relaxed, and confident. He stepped up in the pocket on the long throw. His footwork and fundamentals were good.
