Boyle played with Rodgers under Hackett for a couple of seasons in this scheme, so he SHOULD look more decisive and at ease. Zach is still learning the offense and rebuilding his confidence.
It's going to be hard to judge his progress when he won't play any regular season games. Playing preseason games against scrubs/backups playing a vanilla, basic defense is one thing. Doing it against a starting a defense who is disguising different looks, coverages is something else. Unless Rodgers gets hurt, we won't see Zach play any regular season games for the next 2 years.
It will be hard for us to see, not so much for the CS and JD. We do have a pretty strong D after all. They will see if Zach's footwork is good consistently, if he's going through his progressions, if he's poised in the pocket, climbing the pocket when there's pressure, making good and quick reads and getting the ball out quickly to the right target, if his accuracy is back, and if he is developing touch. They won't be able to see if that changes when he's able to be tackled, but they can see that in preseason action. Even though it may not be their starting D, it won't be our starting OL or offense, either, so it's a fair assessment. If we have a big lead in some games during the season, they'll probably give Zach some time in the 4th Qtr., especially towards the end of the season to see how he plays.
Zach can't win. If he's good it because he was against second guys. If he's bad it must be because he sucks. Who cares? Talent will get plenty of chances. Play well kid!
JRJR said: ↑ Accuracy didn’t look good and he was late on throws. Honestly, he looked like a college QB in a system he knows. FYI this poster was referring to Boyle with this comment. I disagree with him.
Right, and that's when his contract is up. All the Zach loyalists on this board will begging Douglas to give Zach a huge extension, based upon his preseason "success" like the game against the Browns ( 3 completions). And Douglas WILL give Zach a new contract to try to justify using #2 overall on him.
Toxic? How dramatic! It was a short, inconclusive demonstration. Nothing more, nothing less. How is that "determined to shit on the kid"? BTW, why are you calling him a kid? Show a little respect.
The plan is to showcase Zach and get rid of him and pick someone else up. He needs out of New York. Enough talk about how Rodgers is helping him. A starting defense will hurt him. Dump him
No, we won't all be begging Douglas to give Zach a "huge" extension. If Zach has proved himself in practice, preseason, and in any in season games in which he played, and JD and Saleh were sincere in still believing in him, I would expect that Zach would get a fair short-term, "prove it" contract loaded with fairly easily achieved incentives and some escalators built in if he plays at a high level.
In that scenario he would just try and "prove it" somewhere else. he's not gonna get the 5th year extension. So his contract is out after '24, his agent is gonna advise to hit the market and he and his mom will definetely be happy to play in a new city -- I think the only scenario in which he somehow continues with the NY Jets after '24 is if Rodgers gets hurt (god forbid) and he plays really well and redeems himself. very unlikely but more likely than being a backup for 2 years and accepting a small little prove it type contract. Bust draft picks move on and its always better for both parties when they do
File this under "careful what you wish for.." If it truly is Zach time, we'll see it play out the rest of this PS as its not Rodgers' MO to participate in the games. If Zach has to play during the season, it means the unthinkable has happened and Rodgers is not on the field. I still think Rodgers' jet tenure had a second purpose: To mentor Zach Wilson in a last chance effort to salvage his career with the Jets. I can also envision a 3rd purpose: Being a defacto coach for the offense just in case Hackett can't hack it..
We might be lucky enough to get a blow-out win or two on the board which means we can see Zach get some late action.
