I still believe with a OL and a decent RB and these WR's sans Marshall that Petty can be a good starter. Flame away but I think he is as good as any other of the Jets mediocre choices. Better than bringing in Cutler or Romo. And it's amazing to me how much cred Geno still gets on this forum after how many pick 6's he's thrown and how awful he was at times. Not to mention the circus he brought last August. It's been very tough to assess Petty with this team these last few weeks. The entire team plays sloppy, mistake ridden football. Petty has made mistakes of his own. His accuracy hasn't been there. But I believe there is something there. Time will tell.
I think Petty has every chance to succeed but to say that he is a better option than Tony Romo based on what we have seen so far is batshit crazy.
Ok, not wanting to seem batshit crazy let me elaborate! Bringing Romo in while the Jets are in full on rebuild mode is not a good option. He is a very good QB and the best available but will be a short term rental. Not the long term answer for the future we are all looking for. He is a better option for the Broncos or even the Bills that have more pieces than the Jets and can make a playoff run. Not to mention he would last all of two games with the swiss cheese of an OL the Jets have and be expensive to boot.
You have to wonder. At the same time, what lineman wants that on their reel? Only one's that want to be unemployed and/or president of Ryan Fitzpatrick fan club.
I understand that there'll always be a faction of fans that blindly defends a player regardless of whether or not it's merited, but why Petty? What has he done or shown to deserve this? He was a 24 year old rookie that went in the 4th round and was undraftable in the eyes of some teams, didn't have a playbook in college, apparently never played in the rain, never took a snap under center, played in the biggest joke offense in the country, can't get off his first read, hesitates to the point where he pump fakes 3 times to the same receiver, sets wrong protections to get himself killed, has no awareness for the rush, can't read defenses and has even shown significant accuracy problems downfield. The only thing he's done is throw nice spirals to wide open receivers when he gets all day to throw. Is that impressive enough to unequivocally vouch for him? I don't get it. I think we're just so desperate for an answer that we're trying to find it in anyone in front of us.
I got the sarcasm but it seemed to indicate that I had a contrary position when I was making the same point.
That describes Brady his whole career and Prescott this year. Tight spirals to wide open receivers because they have all day to throw. You make the point exactly as to why Jet QB's fail. Why Petty? Well in my opinion: Big arm. Has been inaccurate at times, but also shows he can throw pinpoint lasers. Question is one of whether more reps will improve his accuracy and timing. Debatable, but no one knows the answer to that. Not even Petty. Enough good stuff to want to see more. Smart. He came from a simplistic offensive system but in year 2 has shown ability to master the playbook, adjust pass coverages (though still making mistakes) and read defenses (makes a handful of mistakes a game) He showed improvement each week and in my view better than Geno or Sanchez at this stage. He hasnt thrown any pick 6's and doesnt wear a colored wristband. Seems very thoughtful and engaging in his press conferences. Very unBowles like. Comes off a natural leader, good guy and can handle the pressure of the NY media. (my opinion.) This is a bigger asset than people think. Sanchez and Geno were too fragile and let the media get to them. I think Petty is more mature and can withstand the storm better. Hard worker. Reported to be the first player in the building. Got leaner and more muscular in his second year. Data. Despite starting midseason, with a 2nd string OL, a bunch of veterans who have mailed it in on a team out of the running and with a coaching staff likely out the door, Petty put up stats that were comparable to his peers. Completion percentage, yards, TD's vs INT's he is comparable to Carr, Bridgewater, Winston, and much better than Geno and Sanchez after their initial starts. I posted this elsewhere.
Ill chalk it up to inexperience, poor online, and possible lack of creativity in route design. My biggest issue is that he gets hurt in almost every game... e.g. Romo. Cant be a franchise qb at home or in recovery all the time.
Thats the big risk factor. I didnt think the preseason hit or last weeks fumble tackle were obvious injury hits. But Petty was sidelined anyway. That is concerning...
There is one question that's been bugging me since this thread topic came up... Why would the Jets spend a 4th round pick on a BACKUP Qb when there are JAGS on the market that could do the job? Who does that??? Is money the sole cause of this massive fuck up? Somebody help me out here on this cause I don't get it at all. Macc either really is clueless when it comes to Qb's or he lives in an alternate universe where you spend a 2nd rd. DP on a project Qb that takes years to develop because you spent a 4th rd. pick on a backup QB the year before. Sounds f'n stupid to me but hey, I'm just a longtime fan.. WTF is going on with this team????
Forgive me for not being able to decipher the acronym. Journeyman something? Or Just Another Guy who Sucks?
