Put Petty behind Cowboys oline with Elliot and things would likely be different. Seriously judging Petty completely based on what he's done this year with that decimated oline and no Decker isn't really fair. Petty wasn't even expected to be NFL ready until next year and folks are ready to pull the plug this quickly, and likely are the same folks that were screaming for him to start the second he came back from his injury.
O-line seems to be the current fad. What happened to edge rushers? They were all the rage when I joined the forum last February.
Because it's bullshit. Mac took bright, strong character guys with strong arms and is hoping his coaching staff can develop one of them into a starting QB. It's all you can do if you aren't on the clock with a Luck or Rogers available. One thing I was thinking about is how screwed up the draft and evaluating QB's is. A total crap shoot. QB's are chosen and evaluated Junior or Senior year of college. If the NFL was like MLB, Hack would have been the first prospect signed to a club when he graduated out of HIgh School. At that point in his life, he was the best prospect in the country. He goes to Penn and has a great year. If he could have declared for the draft right then and there he would have been a first round pick, maybe a number 1 pick. But he sticks with a tainted program, has a few rough years adjusting to a new system and is now a reach in the second round and people are calling him a bust. He hasn't even taken a professional snap yet. Same thing with Petty. He plays OK on a crap Jet team, and now he's a bust. It's crazy. It's not like these guys are Johnny Manziel.
So, where did the narrative come from about the Jets drafting Petty strictly to be a back up? If Hack regressed that far at PSU, why spend a 2nd rd pick on a guy you already know going in won't be ready for years? Just doesn't make sense..At least to me..
Where did it come from? Mehta? Cimini? Fitz? Did Mac ever say that about these guys? He just said he liked these prospects and they needed time to develop. And as far as regressing, QB's appear to do it all the time. Especially when they have OL issues. Even Brady has had down years and was thought to be finished several times in his career.
Maccagnan: "We feel ability-wise, he can definitely be a quality No. 2 backup and the rest is kind of up to him. He has the physical ability to potentially be a starting-caliber quarterback, but he still has to go out there and do it on the field in preseason and kind of see where he's at. But we're very excited about working with him and we do feel he has a bright future." http://m.newyorkjets.com/news/artic...Progress/c1f84b9b-8af9-410b-b5a8-06128eca2d54 That quote is after his redshirt year and he said something to the same effect right after he was drafted.
So if I'm reading this situation right, the Jets spent a 4th rd dp on their backup QboTF. Then the following year spent a 2nd rd. dp on a kid that had only one good (freshman) year, then regressed for the rest of his time at PSU.. Is this the gist of it? Have I missed something along the way?
Pretty much. Mac has handled the QB situation extremely strangely since he got here. It feels like this is coming to a crescendo with the fates of both Bowles and Mac lying on the staff's ability to develop Hackenberg. I'm not overly optimistic that anyone can teach a quarterback to throw a football, let alone the staff we have.
It's no mystery why this team finds itself in the situation that its in. How does one justify spending a 4th rd pick on a backup QB when you're sitting on a pile of cash and can sign any JAG Qb off the scrap heap to serve as a backup Qb? Then practically doubledown on the initial fckup by spending a 2nd rd dp on a Project QboTF that will take years of developmental work and adjustments? This is our leadership at work? Really? OMG.. we're truly fucked. Not even a reach around in the forecast. Has it occured to anyone that of the only Qb's we'll have under contract in 2017, one has never taken a NFL snap and the other is trying to get put back together after being pummeled repeatedly like a rented mule? We're supposed to have hope looking at this situation? Someone pass me a big assed Joint and a bottle of Jack!
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Until the Jets strike gold on a QB, I'm okay with them drafting one every year. It's pretty much a crapshoot. Who expected the 7th rounder, Siemian to help take his team to the playoffs, or 4th round Prescott to get more wins than Tony Romo in his first year? You never know where you are going to find that franchise player. Derek Carr was a 2nd rounder just like Hack and look what he's doing in his 3rd year. The jury is still out on Petty, but this injury could be a major setback if he misses next year's training camp. This was one of the reasons I wasn't on the "start petty at all costs" bandwagon. Sure, it's nice to see what he's got, but if he's not ready it can be detrimental. Petty was drafted to be a backup, but they realized he had starter potential, it clearly says it in the 2nd line of the quote. Kirk Cousins was drafted in a similar spot and now he's starting and is about to get paid big time. It's easy to judge the Jets in hindsight, but you can't fault them for trying to find a QB each year in the draft. You don't always need to trade the farm to move up in round 1 to find a QB. Last time the Jets did that they ended up with Mark Sanchez. Maybe they do that this year for Watkins?
