This is just a guess but I'm guessing Cotchery got the assignment for two reasons:

    1. Rex Ryan is running out of people he trusts completely on the Jets roster and Cotchery is on that short list.

    2. Cotchery will take the assignment and execute it absolutely as well as he can, which of course is why he fits point 1 above.

I think Ryan is approaching a point where he runs the risk of losing control of the overall situation. Giving responsibilities to your best players is one way of dealing with that.

And yeah I'll be plenty pissed if Cotchery gets hurt, but then again I'd be pissed watching whoever else was back there muff punts at this point.

    I like this.

Although, to be honest, I'd rather have Revis on PR's and Cotchery on KO Returns. Revis excelled as a PR at Pitt and J-Co ran 1 or 2 back as a rookie in '04 (everyone remember that Ram bring back?). And for those saying you shouldn't have starters on Special Teams, go rewatch the Jets/Dolphins game a few weeks back and tell me Special Teams is not important. Yes,that was a coverage issue, but still, if we had some regular starters in there, Ginn doesn't bring those back. We made some stupid roster moves for that game.

I know Revis excelled at returning, but I don't think it's a good idea to put one of our best players, if not out best player, at the return game where they'll be hit hard. I'm OK with Cotchery returning, but I'd rather have Brad Smith or even Clowney returning punts and kickoffs.

Clowney would be an interesting possibility. I get the feeling that Ryan doesn't trust him though.

^ i think on kickoffs clowney could be a weapon. returning punts is not something i would be comfortable seeing clowney do. i do not want to see his first dropped ball in a game be on a punt.

Rex and Westhoff discussed the possibility of Clowney returning kickoffs in one of his pressers this week. I wouldn't be surprised to see him back there.

I think it would be a good option. And he has very good speed, so he couldn't be that bad.

I hate this idea---------I don't want Cotchery back there at all!!!
You mean on this whole frigging roster and practice squad we have NO ONE ELSE who can return punts???

it's not litos quality of play that is hurting us. it's his lack of being on the field. when he's played in the reg season he's been pretty solid. stop holding on to those 2 horrible pre season games. i'm glad lito will be back and 100% for the pats on sunday, as much as they pass we need him more than most think.
