Too many key players who got us to those two AFC Championship Games are gone. Tanny and Rex allowed them to walk. We are close to nothing. With a couple of exceptions, we don't have warriors. We have a bunch of self-absorbed quitters on our lines. Swiss cheese offensive and defensive lines.
The Jets were 9th in TOP http://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stats/?cat=team&pan=14 Next excuse They might be 17th or 18th removing those points. Ok, so how high do you think they climb? to 17th?
I truly believe that with 2 or 3 more pieces our D will be back to '09 form. Even if it isn't we were I think 9-7 in 09 with best defense and rushing attack last year with a slightly worse defense and running game we were 11-5. Maybe we need for balance throughout the team.
Couldn't time of possession be very misleading since if the offense turns the ball over at their own 20 and the defense lets up a touchdown it is going to be a lot less than if we drove down the length of the field for 3 points? Also, we were very hit or miss with our offense. If we scored it was on a long drive and if we messed up it was very quickly in a three and out. Combine this with the defense giving up big plays and special teams fumbling countless times and TOP could be very misleading.
I dont understand how anyone can blame losses on the defense. The offense (outside of the redzone) was inept. All around terrible year for the Jets. No improvements anywhere on the team. Revis is Revis. That is about it. *Kyle Wilson played much better and Mo was a good pick, but not game changers*
by my count the offense surrendered 6 TDs and a safety which moves the season total of 363 points allowed to 319 or from 22.7 per game to 19.9 ... good enough to jump from 20th to 9th, other teams offense points surrendered notwithstanding but thats also not including the cowboys returning a pick to the 1 yard line, and the turnovers in the bills, eagles and raiders game that gave them possession inside the red zone
Keep in mind the Giants played that day with no Mario Manningham and no Jake Ballard, 2 very important 2nd options for that offense especially considering what Revis does to at least 1 wr at all times.
you'd have to go through team by team to see STs/O pts they allowed. There's no way they jump from 20th to 9th when all things are equal.
but im pretty sure the jets were tops in the league in points against off of turnovers by a wide margin ... when factoring other teams offensive/ST TDs, the jump will still be significant
The Giants team that faced the Packers was a much healthier team than the one that faced the Jets on both sides of the ball.
every team is banged up late in the year, the giants were just not playing as well then as they are now. They were beginning to regain their confidence, we could have buried them but instead they buried us.
And if you look at actual points given up by the defense (discounting opponents return TD's), the Jets defense was tied for #9 in the league in true points allowed. Considering the poor field position that the offense and special teams often put the defense in you could argue they were better than that. A quick analysis shows that Jets opponents started a drive in FG position an average of one time per game in 2011. We all know this happens every so often, but for the Jets it happened once a game on average. That's way too many times. So the ~19 points per game that the Jet "D" gave up includes practically 3 points that the "O" and "ST" put the opposition in position to score already. I'm not saying that the defense was as good as in 2010 or 2009. Just that an honest assessment has to put the majority of the 2011 issues on the offense. With a couple of tweaks the defense can be a top defense in this league. Hopefully the offense can step it up.
If the Jets don't get a safety that can significantly slow down or stop TE's like Gronk-Henandez, Witten, Davis, etc we will be on the outside looking in again. We will not beat the pats 2x's next season unless we get the help in the middle of the field. Safety should be the team's #1 priority. A top notch pass rusher would be my #2 target. All other improvements should be to get the offense going.
nyjunc - You are totally wrong here. Even if you only take the opposition return TD's and safeties from the total points allowed for all of the NFL teams, the Jets "D" does in fact go from #19 to #9 in points allowed. The Jets actually gave up 7 return TD's (tied for most in the league). Looking at the stats this is very easy to calculate for all of the teams. Again the Jets "D" (not that I'm saying they were great), had to put up with a TD scored by the opposing teams defense/ST virtually every other game as well as having the opponents offense start a drive in FG position an average of once a game. All things considered (ie. no dominant QB rush threat) they did OK in my book. Of course, there were some disgusting breskdowns (Denver, Giants), but every team experiences that.
The Jets allowed 51 non defensive pts so the actual points allowed by the D was 312 the top 5 all gave up less than 312 including O/STs pts allowed so we'll look at teams 6 through 20 actual pts allowed: 6. Seattle 280 7. Tennessee 289 8. Miami allowed 302 9. Cincy 309 10. Jax 311 10T. Chi 311 12. Atl 313 13. Philly 314 14. Dal 317 15. NO 325 16. AZ 328 17. KC 329 18. NE 331 19. Atl So we would be in at #12 bunched up w/ a bunch of teams- mediocre.
