1st off 30 is a prime playing age. so maybe if u have a problem with having 30 plus guys on the team then we need to cut barret, barton, coles, dyson, dearth, ellis, graham, pennington.. etc.. come on now.
I'd take Rice over Strahan in a heartbeat if money is equal. Rice is 3 years younger, less injury proned throughout his career and only has 12 fewer sacks than Strahan in 3 fewer seasons. Rice is every bit the player Strahan has been in his career. Only difference is Rice played in Arizona and Tampa, not exactly First tier media markets. At this stage in the game, Rice has much more to offer us for 2 or 3 years than Strahan could.
Good point...all reports down here out of Tampa are that he was in great shape and ready to roll into camp when he was called into the meeting where he got cut. They even had a picture of him smiling at camp in the paper and he gave the, "I got plenty left, they'll see the mistake they made" speech immediately after being cut. I think this is another keyshawn cut on gruden's part...a guy that he didn't want around that became expendable with the signing of Adams. Could he replace KVO? or would he be gunning for Hobson/Bowens' spot?
Agree...I think we'd use Rice as a rush end primarily. KVO is more of a space eater. Not saying Rice wouldn't line up in a 3 pt stance, but for the most part he is a guy who does his best damage on the edge and in space chasing down RB's. That probably means he'd be battling Bowens and others in camp.
But they didn't need an excuse to cut him. Failing a physical has some meaning here especially when he's coming off an injury.
Then again, here's another take on it. "The manner in which the Buccaneers handled the termination of Simeon Rice's contract with the team is causing a serious problem among veterans on the team, according to our pal Steve Duemig of WDAE radio in Tampa. The official excuse for the move -- a failed physical -- apparently is the standard line used by the Jon Gruden regime when it dumps a guy who still can play (see Shelton Quarles). Apparently, Gruden addressed the media before dinner and said that all of the players had reported, and that all of them were healthy. Duemig says that Rice was at dinner on Thursday night with his teammates, and pulled aside to meet with the powers-that-be. Rice was told that he had to take a pay cut or be released, and that he had five minutes to make up his mind. In our view, Rice could be the first of several long-term Bucs who get bumped off as Gruden hits what we believe to be his make-or-break season with the team. With Cato June in the fold to play weakside linebacker, we wouldn't be shocked at all if Derrick Brooks is the next one to get squeezed." If true he won't come cheap as he was due to make 7.5 mil this year and obviously decided not to take a cut.
If we can obtain rice relatively moderate why wouldnt anyone take him for a 2 year type deal? His health doesnt seem to be that much of an obstacle
I would definitely sign Rice, but the giants(I don't believe Stranahan is retiring) and Titans could be offering him a position on the Dline out right from the start of the season.......
he's 33... most of the guys u named were draft picks... this team has had a history of bringing in defenders in their 30's past their prime... plus he's a cancer...
If anyone, the Giants will win that battle so that they can take the upper hand in the Strahan chess match currently taking place. If the GMen get Rice, they can tell Strahan to play for his contract or not at all. This retirement crap is just a ploy to get his contract. I don't think we'll be serious about getting Rice but maybe just to get in it just to see how much he'd be (also to raise the GMen's asking price). We don't need Rice.
