According to nyjets.com https://www.newyorkjets.com/news/jets-add-tom-compton-to-offensive-line Compton has started 29 out of 85 games in his career, and has played LG, RG and RT. He started 14 games at LG for the Vikes last season. Sounds like he could be a good depth/competition signing. Keep it going, Mac! At some point, we need a backup LT/RT as I assume Compton will be more of a backup OG, and a starting C. I'd love it if we could add Josh Sitton as well, and have some intense competition for the starting OL jobs this summer!
I don't know anything about Compton outside of Los Angeles California but I do like how he did start 14 games as a Viking last season because Cousins did have a great season. I just hope he wasn't Minnesota's weak link ala leftovers.
I would imagine he projects as the primary backup at both guard spots. Compton doesn’t really solve the issues the Jets have in the starting lineup, but he does profile as a functional depth piece for the Jets. Over the last few years, the Jets’ cast of backups comprising of the Ijalana’s, Qvale’s, Harrison’s, and Dozier’s of the world has been subpar at best and unplayable at worst. This is at least an experienced guy who has some track record of credible play. Even if you don’t want him starting for 16 games, he is better than a lot of the backups teams are running out there in today’s NFL.
Like everyone said good depth. Maybe he pushes Winters but knowing out backup guard and right tackle has experience starting makes you feel better. Same goes for Harrison. We'll probably sign a center and maybe another guy for depth and I'd assume draft two linemen to compete.
