OF COURSE we want a guy like Samuel. Wake up people! He not only is a first rate CB, but also we would be WEAKENING the team we need to jump over (New England).
true point. too bad they didn't do that with the o-line instead of using $64 million of cap space on noodle arm. watching joe willie dominate sb3 and then watching noodle arm is like night and day....
First of all, nobody disputed that they should've resigned Pennington when they did. We didn't know that his shoulder was gonna get screwed up. He played great when he first came in for the Jets, and had more velocity on the ball than he does now. Secondly, he doesn't take up $64 million of cap space, didn't in his first contract, and doesn't in his current contract that he reworked last winter.
That's not the case at all. He had one great 12 game stretch followed by a mediocre 03 season when he basically threatened to cut off negiotations with the team until after the 04 season if he didn't get a deal before the season started. The team caved and gave him an absolute monster deal based on the 02 season.
For the record, mr nyjet has been against the relatively unwarranted praise from the media, the fans and the franchise that Pennington has received since just about day one.... Most people didn't oppose it, but he did...
The team "caving" may have been for the reason that they believed in him. If I remember correctly he did lose his primary receiver in 03(Coles) and got hurt in preseason and was throwing to Curtis Conway. And the team didn't have to give him that "monster deal", they could have just waited another year to see how he panned out and then used the franchise tag on him if they wanted to keep him. Hindsight is 20/20 bro, and I'm a firm believer that if Pennington doesn't blow out his shoulder his career would have ended up alot different. I don't remember any Jets fans or the media questioning that signing.
don't agree with this. Our pass rush stinks and if we sure up the pass rush you can cover up some of the mistakes of the secondary. Look at the giants, they have very slow corners but because of the great pass rush cover up for the weak secondary. Also, if you give a good QB time he will pick apart any secondary no matter how good. Don't get me wrong Samuel is good but the DL and OL need work as do our linebackers.
GM, I've been working on a salary cap spreadsheet, the past couple of weeks. I'm not saying I'm right and he's wrong, but we apparently have a huge discrepency on McCareins and Pennington's contracts. By my calculations, the Jets would save about $2.4 million by cutting him. According to rotoworld, McCareins has a $2.5 million roster bonus that is owed to him in March. I think it's safe to say that he shouldn't expect to see that check. You can save $1.7 million by converting that roster bonus into a signing bonus, but the odds of that happening is zero As to Pennington, based on my figures, the Jets would only save $1.8 million by cutting him. Chad's contract is admittedly tricky considering its size and the major changes that were made to it after the injuries. If this $1.8 million is correct, it's a lot easier to see why Tannenbaum have little interest in moving Pennington unless its a great offer. The other numbers look correct, though I don't know a ton about Robertson's contract (another very complicated one).
No! Terrible idea... period. Our O-line, D-line and linebackers need much more attention at this point than our secondary. Front seven man. Nevermind QB and receivers. Also he doesn't deserve near what Clements got. I don't think he's that great in coverage, really don't. I can easily see him coming to the Jets and getting burned, especially by Pats receivers.
Miller time! I'm still holding on to the thought that we can make CB out of 2nd round pick "Justin Miller". The kid has the tools (physical and fast). If....if.....if... wishful thinking anyway
A LOT of people questioned whether he was worth a Tom Brady level contract when the Pats had just won two Super Bowls and the Jets had one late season run to look at.
Plus, I'm pretty sure Chad was already injured at the time he was awarded his contract. Wow that regime was retarded.
They signed him after the year he broke his hand against the Giants in preseason, he hadn't had any of the shoulder injuries yet.
You can tell when a fanbase has been strap-cuffed for 10 years. Wow, just wow. We have enough cap room, assuming cuts and maybe a couple player for pick trades increasing our funds, to sign: Samuel, Suggs, AND Gross. And still have enough to sign our rookie class a give Rhodes a new deal. Those 3 guys alone allow us to do almost anything in the draft. Get a couple OG's to compete with Bender and Moore and the rest is BPA. Imagine Chris Long at #6 to compete with Ellis and Coleman? How about McFadden to split time with Jones and Washington? Trade down for a bonanza of picks? With the pick we have, and the unprecedented cap space we have (at least from a Jets perspective) almost anything is possible this offseason.
I dont really understand this. Weve already got an absolute top-notch corner on the roster with Revis, and at a relatively cheap salary. Why break the bank on another guy? Which is besides the fact that Ive never believed in Samuel as a true #1 corner. I dont think Ive ever seen the Patriots play him without a safety covering him over the top. If you want a guy who can blanket a receiver over the first fifteen yards, save your money and spend a second round pick on Brandon Flowers, hes got the exact same skill set and wont require the Jets to give out any record breaking contracts.
Having Revis, Rhodes, and Samuel in our secondary would give us one of the best secondaries in the NFL straight up. We know Samuel can play man coverage and we are going to play more man. I'd be all for stealing him from NE.
