Samuel is garbage, if the Jets pay top dollar for that loser then we will have effectively continued the Jets tradition of mediocrity in all phases of the game, including the offseason. Don't waste the money!!!
though Mangini's high on him and we have the cap room, there are better CB's available. And why has everyone given up on justin miller?!?
I'd love to hear this list of available CBs that are better. I can understand the argument of not wanting to pay a DB major money when there are O-Line and front 7 issues. However, the criticisms of Samuel in this thread are absurd.
I don't like the idea of ripping off the Patriots, but if you want to give that team credit for what it does well, then you have to look at it in layman's terms. The Patriots approach the game from a military aspect, and aspect I think was begun with Parcells at Army. Information control, information gathering, regimented training, focus on this immediate, battle-oriented goal instead of the war objective, logistically efficient personnel management (by the numbers stuff instead of impulse-buying), and above-all, a disciplined mentality fostered by a cohesive unit who can trust each other from the superstar to the fourth STs player to get to the ball carrier. I'm not sure how much of that applies to this current Patriots team but that is how they became successful, and when I want a player to further the success of my team I look for one that will further cement my philosophy. When the Pats were looking for players like that early they went after Bryan Cox and Ricky Lyle and Otis Smith. We have gone after guys like Chatham and Poteat. (Chatham I hate and Poteat I absolutely F-ing revere and hope we keep til retirement) I think Samuel could be a player like this that they are targeting, Mangini may be dumb in the eyes of his critics, but I am giving him a little longer. Not nearly as long as I was dumb enough to give Herm, but I'm not stupid enough to think simply in terms of the idea of stealing New England's philosophy, either. It's not New England's philosophy, not Belichick's philosophy, not Tuna's philosophy. It is one fostered by a military academy, it's the NFL military academy and I think teams will begin to adopt that type of organized mindset as a professional philosophy as a deterrent to Pacman Jones and Michael Vick not far from now. Metaphorically speaking. If Samuel comes to the Jets, I will welcome his addition.
Samuel is not garbage is legit and would be good addition, but if he wants Nate Clemens worth money its not worth it, the Giants just beat the pats and look at their secondary. Invest elsewhere and keep building those lines up. A rotation on the D-line is very popular in the NFL and we need to add quality there.
Clements was signed to an 8 year $80 million deal last year with a $22 million bonus. Samuel will command more. Does anyone on this board think that 1) Samuel is worth that much money and 2) that is where the Jets should be spending it? You realize that Samuel is likely to be a first or second day signing, which means that the Jets will have to take the plunge before filling other, more pressing needs. I'd be much happier with signing an OL or two and a NT. Then draft Gholston. Revis has shown that he will be an NFL star. Let someone else spend $100 million on Samuel.
i agree samuel is a very good player, but i'm not for signing him. i think we need to improve the line both sides of the ball, first. i don't think we can sign enough o and d linemen this off season, as well as drafting some. i would also like to get another killer line backer, which will only make our boy harris that much more fierce!!
Why don't I want Samuels? Asomugha >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Samuels in man coverage But I'd rather not spend the money on a big name CB.
I would like to say again that a $100MM Asante Samuel is not the answer for the 2008 NYJ defense. A Good draft, aggressive FA work on OL, and WR speed, speed, and more speed, in my opinion, is the order of the NYJ day this off season.
The JETS never sign a big player anymore.... Stop being so freakin picky. Samuels would be a great signing.
The people who are saying Samuel is not the best CB available..maybe partially correct. There are CB's out there who are better at man coverage than Samuel. However, people are forgetting that we run a very specific scheme that is not solely man coverage. We run a special coverage philosophy that requires the CB to run up to the line, to give the impression of bumping and running, recognize that the play is pass, and than fall back into either off man coverage or some assemblance of a zone. This is a scheme that is generally only used by BB tree.Additionally in the 3-4, the CB is extremely important in run defense..so they must be able to fight off blocks and protect the outside running lanes. Did you notice that the Pats, Jets and Browns all had Revis rated higher than any other teams? That's b/c they require certain skills from their CB's that others do not. It's not an easy position to fill...and if you CAN fill the position w/ 1 maybe 2 extremely good producers within it...it can really make the defense click. We're talking about adding a guy who has excelled in the scheme and would be paired w/ our own extremely young elite CB who ALSO fits the scheme. That'll give us alot of flexibility and improve us in alot of ways people are not acknowledging.
True...but Asomugha does all of this better than Samuels IMO. I'm not entirely sure Samuels isn't the product of extremely good coaching and scheming. I'm probably underrating him a little bit in my posts, but I honestly don't think he's worth the money he'll get.
Samuel would be nice but... Go all out on Suggs until he is securely locked up by the ravens or possibly Cards.
Revis did cover him quite well the last time we played them. Thus furthering the point that we don't need Samuel.
We don't know that b/c Asomugha has never played in that type of scheme. As for Samuels...sure maybe he is a product of the system and of good coaching...but it's virtually the SAME system we run, and one of the main COACHES in his development was our HC. What that means is we'd be getting a proven commodity, who also happens to be a big time playmaker. Which is my whole point
If Corner backs won Championships Bill Belicheck would have signed him to a deal a long time ago. THE PATRIOTS WON A CHAMPIONSHIP WITH TROY BROWN A WR AT CB BECAUSE THEY HAD A LINE! THE GIANTS WON A CHAMPIONSHIP AGAINST AN 18-0 TEAM BECAUSE THEY HAD A LINE! GET IT? WE NEED TO BUILD OUR LINES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yep..b/c we are incapable of addressing the lines and ALSO upgrading other positions despite an extremely high amount of cap space...
