hey everyone, I'm new on this site but have been reading the forums for a while now. I really don't think the way the jets performed against a particular rookie quaterback a decade ago (or even a year or two ago for that matter) means anything. This is 2007. In general, I am really confident about the jets this week. I think Buffalo is a mess, especially on defense. The Jets offense is playing very efficiently and I think will move the ball quite well on buffalo. I know our defense sucks right now but I just can't see the bills making enough big plays to keep up with the jets. I think the jets will have several long drives. While our defense may very well get pounded by lynch and give up several long drives themselves, I think Pennigton will likely make more plays than edwards will. The jets have much better weapons on offense than the bills and are playing way too efficiently to be outscored by buffalo right now. The truth is, despite what many have said on this site, Pennington has played very well thus far this season. (note: He has the second best quaterback rating in football and is only slightly behind tom brady for first- although I think qb rating is a bit overrated, you don't bench a guy playing that efficiently. He doesn't even have an interception yet for christ sake, give him a break

Actually, he looked absolutely nothing like Marino. Lemon may have directed one decent drive, whoopdeegoddamndeedo. The guy was not good.
The Jets did indeed win 15-14, but everything else you wrote is incorrect. That was not Smith's first start. He had started 4 games in 1999 and 11 games in 2000. That game against the Jets in 2001 was his only start that particular season. Smith hardly threw all over "us." He was only 4 of 6 for 35 yards. He did direct a 20-play 12:00 drive in the 1st quarter. It ended with a 1-yard TD run by Corey Dillon. Smith then directed two magical 3-and-out drives. On the latter drive he injured his hamstring and sat out the remainder of the game. Finally, that was not Smith's final year as a Bengal. He played (and started) one game for them in 2002.
Yes, that was his first start. December 6, 1981 Jets 23 Seahawks 27 Krieg was 20 of 27 with 2 TDs and 3 INTs. The Seahawks were 4-9 under Jim Zorn. They made the switch to Krieg for the final 3 games and went 2-1. Krieg started 2 of the 9 games in 1982. Zorn started the other 7. They each started 8 games in 1983. Krieg started all 3 playoff games. Krieg was 12 of 13 for 200 yards and 3 TDs in the AFC Wild Card Game. Krieg played okay in Miami. The following week he sucked in the Championship Game in L.A. He was 3 of 9 for 12 yards with 3 INTs and got pulled for Zorn. The score was 27-0 before Zorn threw a TD pass. The Raiders won 30-14. Krieg started all 16 games in 1984.
It was his second start in 1998 and third start overall. He started the Week 16 game in Oakland in 1997. He threw for almost 300 yards in the 22-21 Seahawks win. The following week he played in the Seahawks 38-9 beating of the 49ers. The 49ers were 13-2 and mostly rested their starters after the 1st quarter. Three different 49ers QBs threw at least 10 passes. Warren Moon threw 4 TDs and gave way to Kitna in the 2nd half. Kitna finished 8 of 8 for 88 yards. He also ran for a touchdown.
Cakes, just wondering... Where are you going for all this cut & paste factual information? Either you've got a memory that's unbelievably supernatural or you're an NFL football information geek extraordinaire. Either way, info like this is great. Please head us in the right direction.
My memory, the ESPN Pro Football Encyclopedia, boxscores (some of which can be found online with a Google search), and out-of-print books.
Lol, that is a good point. I expect him to have a pretty good game, like all qbs against us. Hopefully we can dominate their defense and smash them on the scoreboard.
Yeah I remember being more frustrated about the Jets looking flat in the first half rather than Akili Smith playing well....
The first Seattle-Jets game was in 1977, a 17-0 blanking by Seattle. This Seattle 'jinx', as we're all aware continued through the Walt Michaels years all the way into the 80's. The Seahawks and Cleveland Browns absolutely tormented Walt Michaels....
Every match-up is a give and take. Can the defense handle the particular QB? So far, the Jets D has looked weak and has shown that it can make average QBs look better. But the secondary is getting stronger. And I think the scales tilt towards making Trent Edwards look pretty bad. This guy is no prime prospect. He's very green and there's not much good to say about him. I think the Jets are gonna make him look very stupid on Sunday.
I was at that game, at Shea. Was also at the 1981 home game vs Seattle (we played them twice that year, 2 of our 5 losses) and the 1985 game at the Meadowlands when we finally beat them. The 1981 game I was at was the same day as Dodgers-Yankees Game 5 when Goose Gossage hit Ron Cey in the head. We left Shea and it was 2-1 Dodgers, bottom of the 8th, walked 20 minutes to the car, put the radio on and it was still 2-1 Dodgers, bottom of the 8th. Couldn't figure out how that was possible until we heard about Cey getting beaned.
