Yes, Herbert was drafted where he was because of his pro-ready experience and style. He didn't play in an Air Raid offense at Oregon as you describe. They ran the ball a lot out and ran a lot of play action. I'm most impressed with Herbert's accuracy. That's why he is doing so well, his passes are right on the money. I think rookies have advantages in 2020 without crowds or true home field advantages to contend with, but Herbert is playing fantastic even with those advantages.
They had the same coaching staff, same skill position players plus Melvin Gordon and Ekeler healthy and were 5-11 last year with Rivers. I mean Herbert's rookie year is 5x any of Darnold's three seasons. But that's all on the the Jets coaching staff and talent around him?
Yeah man. He puts the ball right on the facemask or in the bread basket at all times. Very consistently accurate too.
Of course it's not all on the staff and talent which is what I said in my very first post I believe. I'm just saying, you're out of your freakin mind if you think Keenan Allen, Mike Williams and Hunter Henry wouldn't far and away be the best players if they were placed in the Jets offense. It's not even remotely close. So when you combine elite talent like Keenan Allen and top tier talent like Hunter Henry with a coaching staff that isn't completely inept in every facet, you get a good QB. I'm not even saying Darnold would have been what Herbert is now in the same circumstances, I'm saying we have no idea what Darnold would have been because we actively made him WORSE from the second he took the field for us.
Keenan Allen, Mike Williams...both #1s instantly on this team. Also they can have Darnold throw every down and put up higher numbers, and both his legs would like Burrow’s right about now... Need to protect your QB first, before you can develop them. Herbert was mostly untouched in that game. PA he has all the time in the world.
if you haven’t watched Hard Knocks, when Hebert was going through drills in early camp, Coach Lynn looking ok and talking to other coaching staff and I think GM, “We knew he had accuracy but he is that good” when going through the netting drills. He was cleanly hitting the targets. Meanwhile despite not so favorable reviews on his accuracy Mac still draft Hackenberg with 2nd pick and with Bowles and staff looking on Hackenberg, they murmured, He can”t hit the sea”
That’s just flat out false and so false it’s borderline ignorant. Herbert was sacked 4x and pressured 23x! I hope for the sake of that post you didn’t actually watch the game. The difference is Herbert is a much better QB now than Sam is and will probably ever be.
Do you know how much play-action Chargers run? Of course, he's getting pressure on very long developing plays. Jets run zero PA, and Darnold actually gets rid of the ball faster than majority of the QBs in the league, and he's still getting pressured up the middle with little time to throw. Flat out false?!! you need to read more into just basic stats, and actually analyze / imagine if the Jets ran PA as much as the Chargers. Darnold be ⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️
First 4 weeks of the season Jets had 16% PA rate. 2nd lowest in the league. Chargers had 28% PA usage. "Finally, play-action is up 5.6 percentage points since 2010. So far in 2020, the league average play-action pass has been worth an incredible 0.25 expected points added per play, making it the most valuable play type in football. Any increase in play-action rate leaguewide is likely to lead to higher scoring." Link: https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/scoring-is-way-up-in-the-nfl-which-teams-does-that-help/
You look like a fool trying to defend that moronic statement earlier. The numbers speak for themselves and if you actually watched the game, the Jets defenders were all over Herbert. It has nothing to do with just a few play action calls. The Chargers ran for barely over 1 ypc so those calls weren’t fooling the Jets even if they tried. They had pressure on Herbert no matter what the play calls were. The difference is Herbert is much more accurate than Sam will ever be and gets the ball out and doesn’t take so many of the boneheaded sacks that Sam takes. Your hard on for Sam just blinds you of all reality.
I wanted Allen or Darnold and wanted nothing to do with Rosen or Baker. Allen was my first choice but that really doesn’t matter he would of been ruined too. Herbert has 2 pro bowl wide receivers and a former RB as his coach. Their run game hasn’t slowed down much with all their injuries either. Darnold on the chargers would be similar results I would think maybe with the slight edge to Herbert as he is showing how good he can be.
I agree with you that it is okay to say Sam is bad, but at the same time you can say we don't have weapons like Joe or Herbert have. It doesn't have to be one or the either. I do agree with you though and it is time to move on. Wasn't going to comment in this thread, but saw this pop up on my Twitter timeline a few moments ago.
What does playcalling have to do with Sam holding onto the ball for six seconds and refusing to throw a wide open slant (only to give up a coverage sack)? That stat against the awful Bills defense was very telling. 7/18 for 59 yards and 2 interceptions with a clean pocket.
