I don't know if anyone else has heard yet, but it seems best-case scenario for DeJesus is a month. There's a chance he needs surgery though, and that could spell extended DL-stint. I knew it when I saw it. There was no way it was just a sprained thumb. The first thing I said was "Damn, he broke his wrist." That takes him right off the trade block. Speaking of trades, it appears the Yankees aren't done looking at starting pitching. 4 teams are currently involved in the Dan Haren sweepstakes it appears. Detroit, Philly, St. Louis, and the Yankees. I'm not sure I want to make this deal. Granted, our starters haven't looked great lately, and Pettitte's out for a while, but I was on-board with the "This is only about Cliff Lee" thing in terms of our prospects. The only team of the Steinbrenner era with a better record at this point in the season was the 98 team, and that was only 3 more wins. I still say bring up Nova to fill Pettitte's spot. Mitre's already shown himself capable of pitching well out of the pen. That's where we need the most help.
I'm not convinced that the Yankees are actually that interested in Haren--I'm sure that Cashman's made a call or two, but the media attaches the Yankees to pretty much any trade target who has a contract with lots of money left on it so it's tough to say how real their interest is. I do feel confident that Cashman won't get rid of Montero or Romine. And, to be honest, past those guys all of our prospects are pretty replaceable.
on the catcher note, cashman says several teams have inquired about francisco cervelli, but he prefers to have depth. the success of 17 yr old internatonal signee Gary Sanchez may make someone expendable, most likely Montero, since Romine is the only capable defensive backstop of the three.
Well, there is Nova and Nunez who are pretty good prospects. Not at Montero's level, but both are very good ballplayers. Russo is better than he looked in limited time up here as well. Golson has potential too. We have talent in the minors. No one at Montero's level, but then again, few teams can brag they have anyone at Montero's level. I love Cervelli, but if Cashman can get value for him he has to take it now. Cisco is never going to be better than a .250 hitter in the majors. While I value his behind-the-plate skills, he's still far less valuable than any catcher in our entire system not named Chad Moeller. If he can be traded for anything, we have to take it. I'll tell you what, a couple of weeks ago I might have said Montero was expendable. Now? Not a chance. If there is any way to make him a MLB catcher, his future is in pinstripes. The hitter he's becoming will make any shortfall defensively negligible. Honestly, Romine is the guy I think will wind up as the trade chip since even if you give Sanchez 7 years he'll only be mid-20s when he's ready. That's enough time to cycle out some of the old guard and maybe move Montero into a 1B/DH guy.
The series is actually July 22-25, btw. Game 4 is Sunday afternoon, and the newly-acquired O'Sullivan faces Hughes.
There's definitely talent in the minors, but most of it is still far away from the majors. The amount of money that the Yankees usually spend on international free agents and the risk involved with a guy in single A ball makes me more willing to see those guys go in trades. Guys like Nova, Nunez, and Russo are very replaceable. All of them are probably good enough to be big league players, but we're talking about back of the rotation pitchers or bench players here. I agree with this 100%. Cervelli brings a lot of energy and some timely hits, but he's not that great at anything and he's not a valuable player. The only way that I'd move Montero is in a deal for a guy like Cliff Lee--a legitimate superstar. The way that he's playing in AAA as a 20 year old is astounding.
While Sanchez is an exciting prospect, I doubt it's just half a season's worth of success for Sanchez that makes Montero "expendable." If anything, I think it'd be Sanchez that's more tradable.
I just meant that montero and sanchez are similar players. young international signees that are awful defensivley. Montero doesn't have a position on this team. but, like kinghenry said, id only move him for a legitimate superstar.
Burnett looked very focused out there. I think a lot of his problems stem from not having a good enough game plan--when he isn't shaking off the catcher, and he's mixing his curveball in at the right spots, he's a far better pitcher.
AZ wants Chamberlain, Nova and two other prospects for Haren. Cashman is offering just prospects. They aren't close and I'm fine with that. Haren was good once but if he is leading MLB in hits and second in HRs pitching in the feeble NL west then what is he going to do here? And what are they going to do with him when they want to go after Lee this winter? http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/news/story?id=5405807
I didn't feel like starting a thread but how impossible would it be to get affordable tickets for the Friday night game against the Sux on August 6? When I say affordable I mean under a hundred bucks for 2.
Wow possible obstructed view.... uggh just don't feel like goin to Philly to watch the Mets get pounded by the Phils. The Blueclaws are on the road and I guess that leaves Trenton (if they're home) or that Camden team.
I agree with everything except Nova. I think you're under-selling him. I have a feeling he's at least a middle of the rotation guy. I think his ceiling is a #2, but still, on a team that would have at least CC, Lee, and Hughes, that's a helluva #4. Nunez is progressing too. I do agree that he's replaceable now, as is Russo who is also maturing. I also think you sell Cervelli short behind the plate, but it's still not enough to make him anywhere near untouchable. If a team wants him and is willing to give us practically anything, we need to take it. It's always mental with AJ. Always. We were having a party the last start and when he came out for being "hurt" there was loud laughter and the words "strained vagina" were heard repeatedly. He actually said last night in the post-game that he had just found his release point on his curve and was begging to head back out there after the delay. If he felt better at the tail-end of the appearance last night, he was just flat out on. (Though he gave up a few too many long fly balls.) I completely agree with you on this one Don. Haren is not an AL East pitcher. And to give up anything close to what they're asking is insane. Arizona is looking for a Lee package for Zito talent. Haren's good, but not elite, and in the AL East he will make Burnett look like a Cy Young candidate. Honestly, I don't know for sure, but I'd say good luck. Check Stub Hub but don't count on it.
Yeah took a gander and they're more then what I want to spend especially for obstructed view and I'd need 4 because I'm guessing I have to pay for my 2 1/2 year old. I just looked at the Thunder and they're playing Binghamton so it's a win for me plus great seats are only 12 bucks a pop.... oh and it's David Robertson bobblehead night (I don't know if I should be excited about that but hey free shit is free shit)
