I have no problem with Kendall doing what's best for him.

I actually see his point, but the Jets have to do whats best for them, and I don't think Kendall is the same player anymore and I don't think he's worthy of a raise.

I hate the idea of releasing him. He'll end up in the AFC east. Trade or negotiate...preferably trade.

I completely agree, which is why I was hoping we would use one of our four first day picks on the offensive line. The Revis trade up made much more sense then the Harris one, although I understand the reasoning behind both. Still without a 4th round pick and a ton of holes on this team, it might have been better to hold off on the Harris trade, or attempt to trade next year's third instead. We sure could use a nice young guard prospect right now.

Although Kendall is not a pro bowler, I would still rather have his veteran experience on the o-line even if he is aging with some character concerns. I will take one more year of him over gambling on Adrian Clarke.....

Kendall, while not a pro-bowl OG, was the strongest player on the Oline next to Mangold. Moore is sub-par, Clement an average at best journeyman, and Brick had to learn one of the toughest positions in the game. Most reports have Kendall's guidance as being the biggest factor for Gold and Bricks quick growth and development.

He was certainly old and not the best in the league, but come on Clarke an upgrade? Before Kendall decided to hold out, who even heard of Clarke? No one would even remember he was on the team if Kendall was still going to start. Hell if there wasn't a dispute with Kendall, Clarke most likely would have been training camp fodder or on the depth chart behind Smith. The FO saw the writing on the wall with Kendall, but it was too late to do anything significant, so they signed the best guy they could, a castoff from Philadelphia. A team that is known for having great lines and stockpiling talent. If he was that good, do you really think a team like the Eagles would have released him? "Younger, bigger, stronger" does not translate in "better" necessarily. He is a stop gap. I really to think the FO thought Kendall would come crawling back, and when he didn't (I don't agree with what he is doing, the guy is an asshole) they had to do something and Clarke was the best they could find.

Well yeah, Philly stockpiles so many guys, but you can't expect them to hold all of them.

  6. Clarke was released due to a lingering injury, w/ that said he did start some games for them...and was highly thought of coming out of college(aside from a weight problem).

To me Kendall is rapidly depleting. i'd much rather let Clarke, Jones, Smith and Bender compete for the LG spot. We may very well end up w/ an upgrade, we'd add more youth and size to the OL for the long term, and stand to save some $.

I would rather have someone who's younger with potential than an older player with diminishing skills.

    Too late now...

Where does he get this stuff? He really is a Mangenius...he is calm and calculating and can say nothing with a lot of words or a lot with few. Either he or his PR guy is the best thing this side of Karl Rove.

Everyone kept saying it would take trouled times before we had the full picture of what Mangini is as HC of the NYJ - I think he's doing just fine with this one.

I also don't think he'll be vindictive about this.

My only concern is that those in the media corps who are disgruntled will jump in on Kendall's side (I'm talking about you Leberfield and you Cimini) just because they bear a grudge towards Mangini vis-a-vis his media restrictions. No doubt we'll hear 'if the Jets allowed players to speak there'd be no need to focus on Kendall', etc.

    Could be nasty.

Kendall asks Jets to release or trade him Click here to find out more!
    NFL.com wire reports

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (June 14, 2007) -- Pete Kendall was down on one knee on the sideline away from the rest of his teammates, his left hand cupping his chin as he stared out at the field.

The New York Jets' first-team offense ran through drills while the veteran offensive lineman barely appeared to be a part of the team. If Kendall gets his wish, he won't be for much longer.

Kendall has asked the Jets to trade or release him because of a bitter contract dispute, and his frustration and anger were clear as he spoke to the media for more than 20 minutes after the morning practice at veteran minicamp.

"My situation's just become a circus," Kendall said. "I'm very unhappy."

Kendall, a 12-year veteran and an offensive co-captain who'll be 34 next month, is looking for a big raise on his 2007 salary, but the Jets haven't budged. That's because he re-negotiated his contract last year, signing a four-year deal.

"I'm not here to win a spitting contest," Kendall said. "I just want to be fairly compensated."

Kendall was praised throughout last season by coach Eric Mangini for mentoring rookie linemen D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Nick Mangold. Kendall also adds versatility on the line and can play a number of positions. He's also well liked by his teammates as well as the media, in particular for his candidness.

On this day, Kendall occasionally practiced with the first-team offense, but was regularly replaced by Adrien Clarke at left guard while he was relegated to second-team work.

"It's awkward. I'm not happy to be here," he said. "I suspect there are people in the organization who aren't happy that I'm here. It's very awkward. I guess now I'm second team."

Kendall, obviously, believes he is still a starter in the NFL -- and deserves to be paid that way.

"I think my play and my performance and my contributions warranted reconsideration," Kendall said.

So Kendall and his agent, Neil Schwartz, approached the Jets, Mangini and general manager Mike Tannenbaum in the offseason and told them he wanted more money.

"I had a conversation with Mike Tannenbaum two weeks ago," Kendall said. "I said what I'm asking for is not unreasonable, and he agrees that I'm underpaid. I think we have an agreement, we just don't have a contract."

What they do have, though, is lots of hard feelings.

"The situation bothers me," Kendall said. "It's just one thing after another. I placed a phone call to Eric right before the draft and I'm still waiting for a return phone call. I don't know how to take that. He talked to my agent, and my agent told him, 'Call Pete.' I still haven't gotten a phone call back. I guess you take it for what it is."

Kendall actually did receive a call from Mangini sometime the night of June 14, but he said it lasted only seconds and was far from friendly.

"All I know is he wanted to know how this was going to go down today," Kendall said.

Mangini quickly brushed off questions about that conversation.

"All meetings that I have with the players are really internal meetings," Mangini said. "That's not just this meeting. It's really all meetings."

Tannenbaum was complimentary of Kendall, and said the fact Schwartz represents first-round pick Darrelle Revis has no bearing on this situation.

"I have all the respect in the world for him," Tannenbaum said of Kendall. "He's played for this organization for three years, came in and played at a high level. He helped Curtis Martin to a rushing title, he played hurt the next year when we were 4-12. Last year, he played well, which did not surprise me."

Before last season, the Jets were set to cut Kendall, but gave him the chance to shop himself around to find a new deal with another team. When the offers were not as good as New York's, Kendall chose to sign a four-year deal -- not a one-year contract -- with the Jets.

"I think all parties went into last year with the understanding that it was a one-year deal," Kendall said. "Eric had serious reservations about keeping me on the team, but we were able to come to an agreement."

Tannenbaum downplayed the situation, and added that the Jets are not trying to trade Kendall.

"Last year, he signed a contract he felt comfortable with at the time and that was a good one in everyone's interest," Tannenbaum said. "And he's here at a mandatory minicamp."

But for how long? Kendall didn't participate in voluntary OTAs during the past few weeks, saying he was working on a continuing-education program. As for training camp next month, Kendall isn't sure if he'll be there.

"You never say never and I wouldn't say the bridge has been totally burned, but it doesn't seem like there's any room to give," he said. "When I'm told that my request is reasonable and there's agreement that I'm underpaid, I don't know what else to say."

I do not think this will go much longer without some kind of action being taken; either renegotiation, trade or release. Something will budge.

As a Pats fan, I agree with this sentiment. Don't sign the fvcking contract if you are not going to honor it. I say let him sit out and sue him for breach of contract.

    Kendall: I'm very unhappy

Know what?....I understand the whole issue. He's negotiating. OK, he's doing it in the media. Bad, but it's all stuff we've seen before. But to say I'm VERY unhappy when he'll get 7 million to play guard for two seasons (if he were to play this season) is a little much. It's not even like he's so friggen great.

I think the reference to the film shows that during last season he was conscience of the fact that he probably wasn't going to be a JET by the 2007 campaign or at least he would have insurance if they didn't budge but that is a curious position to take at his age and back problems. I think he's planning on retiring and wants to cash in and maybe feels the JETS wont get to the SB by the time he does. This is very Mawaeish attitude wise. Later Pete.
